Review

"There is a tough and necessary beauty in this writing, in these finely-detailed portraits of funny, infuriating, heroic people--. Orlandersmith hears the human need for dignity and justice, for love--. She is critic, witness, and poet."--Tony Kushner, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Angels in America"[Orlandersmith's] depictions of the characters in her native East Harlem neighborhood--some broken, some on the way down--are passionate and full of insight."--The New Yorker"An exciting new voice--of fiery rebellion and lilting lyricism--at once full of anger and compassion."--The New York Times

From the Inside Flap

uberance of language that pours forth in Dael Orlandersmith's plays has dazzled critics and audiences alike. In these three pieces, the award-winning writer and performer celebrates the power of words to rescue the young black women she portrays from their constricted worlds. In the Obie Award-winning play "Beauty's Daughter," Diane yearns to free herself from her soul-deadening surroundings, where people drown their unfulfilled aspirations in drugs and alcohol. In "Monster," Theresa imagines a life in the rock-'n'-roll poetry bohemia of Manhattan's Lower East Side and away from her home in East Harlem, where she is scorned as a misfit. And in "The Gimmick," Alexis escapes her brutal reality among the library bookshelves, where she dreams of becoming a writer in Paris. Charged with fearless wisdom, these three electrifying plays transform rage-filled ghetto experience into a triumph of rhapsodic expression.

The last two books in this series (this one if Rampage, and the sixth is “Panic.” Of the six, “The Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie” was probably the most interesting, but I would probably rate “Rampage” as a very close second. Insofar as writing skill, though, “Rampage” has a much smoother flow to it.Compared to present-day mass murderers, Howard Unruh would almost be skipped over. He killed much fewer people than our recent killers. Yet, his story is every bit as perplexing as even the most vile.Without giving any spoilers, please contemplate this: prior to his military service, Unruh probably was as fine a young man as the most polite, mild-mannered member of your own church. Then, the young man went to war, learning how to kill…BLUSH FACTOR: With the exception of a quote of General Patton using the f-word in Chapter 3, there is nothing here that will cause undue embarrassment when reading aloud with your church prayer group. Mind you, it is a true story about a mass murderer, so you may want to read it alone before taking it to read it aloud to your church friends.ADVENTURE: The travel back in time to the mid-20th century can be seen as an adventure.SOUL: In the sense that you get to see how a young person, a seemingly devoted church goer, gets twisted into a bloodthirsty, desperate murderer with little sense of remorse does tend to make one wonder about the soul and the teachings of Jesus. At least, it did get me contemplating such while in church listening to my priest. Without a full devotion to God, just following the rules and attending church does not equip you with a soul. “Rampage” is evidence of that.Since the work is very short, I’m posting only the briefest excerpt I can, but long enough for readers to get a feel for the quality and flow of the writing.EXCERPT‘…Seven years after his graduation, after Howard Unruh had achieved international notoriety, a fellow ex-GI named Chall Allred composed a letter attesting to his sterling qualities. “I served with Howard,” Allred wrote. There was no time when [he] did not conduct himself in an intelligent, quiet, courteous, obedient manner. His character was above reproach. His rating as a soldier was excellent. He was at all times a credit to his outfit even under the most trying conditions, while in conflict against the enemy.[ 12]Unruh’s unit— the 342nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion, part of General George Patton’s Third Army— saw heavy action in Italy, France, Germany, and especially Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, Adolf Hitler’s last, desperate effort to turn the tide of the war. Though he never advanced beyond the rank of private first class, Unruh, by all accounts, was a model soldier—“ a good man on patrol and skirmishes…unrattled and efficient with a rifle.”[ 13]Unruh did have a few peculiarities that distinguished him from his comrades. This book investigates the crimes of Howard Unruh, a mass killer who murdered thirteen people in some ten minutes in 1949. Unruh catalogued complaints against his neighbors for two years before he acted upon them. In reality his anger towards these people was usually undeserved and petty, but he allowed his rage to burgeon until it exploded in a morning of violence against men, women and children, one even as young as a toddler. Rather than facing a death penalty, Unruh was sent to a hospital for the criminally insane; a judgment that scandalized the populace. There he remained for sixty years until his death. Schechter has written a thorough analysis of the gunman and the events of that bitter morning. This is a very involving story and written without fluff or personal opinion.

This book deserves a five-star rating because of the wealth of knowledge followed by a excellent display of literary establishment!!!! I would recommend this book to anyone!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Very well written and it just draw you in. So descriptive but not overwhelming, this was a quick read that was very informative.

interesting tale. never heard of the killer before. easy to read except for the script inserts amongst the type which was a bit distracting.

Make more of this series I love it. This is reading and writing. I’m glad I made this purchase. Buy it!

I didn’t mean to buy this. I clicked on a link that said it was free for Amazon Prime members. When I saw the charge come through my account I tried to return it and couldn’t.

... But very satisfying. I was unfamiliar with this case as I suspect are most of you. It's still shocking today. Sad and compelling like all of Schecter's work.

This University text introduces system programming via Unix/Linux in a way that stimulates students to ask "How is that done?" and then make it happen. The unique approach is good. Far too many would-be programmers are handed a recipe and expect the same on the job. Those who ask "How is that done?" will later ask "How can this be done?" without the example program to inspire them. It's a good way to approach teaching students system programming at the novice level.

Honestly I was annoyed that the professor made us buy his book; however, there is a ton of good info in here. Professor Molay is an expert, no doubt. Unfortunately, the examples are in desperate need of adherence to best practices. If you turned in something resembling the example code into your professor he would fail you.

Only needed it for school. The content is outdated and only good to learn the basics. Many examples no longer compile or work. For this price the book should be updated to at least work on the modern Linux/unix distributions.

This book is very understandable and well written; and that's coming from someone who hates books

The beauty of this book is Prof. Molay's excellent and methodical explanations that elucidate what would otherwise (in other books) seem exceedingly complex and full of arcane details. The pedagogical style of this book is simply quite extraordinary --something that is not found in most programming books. This book, along with Stevens, provide a much deeper understanding of Unix/Linux than what can be acquired by learning by trial and error. This book is, of course, best understood in Prof. Molay's Harvard cscie-28 class --yet the stylistic differences between C in 2002 can be a bit disconcerting, till, of course, you learn more C thanks to this book.

It goes right to the point and it's easy too understand. One of the very few books out there that really shows what system programming is all about. Great samples too.

Awesome book for beginners to UNIX. You will learn a ton!

This book is beautifully written. I just got it today and read the first chapter. I bought it for a class I am taking in Unix Systems Programming. I was relieved when Molay's book arrived in the mail today. I was relieved that the book exceeded my expectations. If you can't afford Harvard, don't worry--the course is all here.

The Canon: A Whirligig Tour of the Beautiful Basics of Science, by Natalie Angier

From Publishers Weekly

Pulitzer-winning science writer Angier (Woman: An Intimate Geography) distills everything you've forgotten from your high school science classes and more into one enjoyable book, a guide for the scientifically perplexed adult who wants to understand what those guys in lab coats on the news are babbling about, in the realms of physics, chemistry, biology, geology or astronomy. More important even than the brief rundowns of atomic theory or evolution—enlivened by interviews with scientists like Brian Greene—are the first three chapters on scientific thinking, probability and measurement. These constitute the basis of a scientific examination of the world. Understand these principles, Angier argues, and suddenly, words like "theory" and "statistically significant" have new meaning. Angier focuses on a handful of key concepts, allowing her to go into some depth on each; even so, her explanations can feel rushed, though never dry. Angier's writing can also be overadorned with extended metaphors that obscure rather than explain, but she eloquently asks us to attend to the universe: to really look at the stars, at the plants, at the stones around us. This is a pleasurable and nonthreatening guide for anyone baffled by science. (May 8) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Bookmarks Magazine

Pulitzer Prize-winner Natalie Angier (Woman: An Intimate Geography), a science journalist at the New York Times, was writing an article on whale genetics when her editor suggested that she define the term mammal for her readers and confirm that mammals are animals. That was the last straw for Angier, who nevertheless writes with respect for The Canon's intended audience. She incorporates imaginative metaphors, concise analogies, and jokes into her writing, which result in clear and accessible explanations of complex ideas. A few critics were annoyed by the scientific "sugarcoating" and the dizzying pace of the book, but most were impressed by Angier's lucid prose and clever word play.Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

I enjoyed the ideas in this book (though I really didn't learn anything new) and in general I liked that the author worked to make the science approachable. The author obviously loves language and finds ways to bring pop culture references in to help non-scientifically minded readers understanding. I do think that this will in the longer term give the book a "dated" feel and someday make it unreadable by younger audiences. The problem I had was that at times the author seemed to be more focused on finding cute ways to say things than on the ideas themselves. The biggest reason for this seemed to be to avoid scaring any unwary readers with "math" or "hard" science. The best example of this comes right at the end when the author talks about the Drake equation. Rather than just give the equation and tell what the variables mean (to me a wonderful way to understand how astronomy intersects historical sciences), the author mentions, almost off-handedly, a few of the variables and then only really explains the last one. In all, a good way to bring the science fearful into a basic understanding that could be nurtured into interest or even love. However, probably not a book for someone who has seen their way through less flowery, more information dense tomes.

The author has to be in the top 10% of all I.Q.s. The attempt to personalize "science and scientists" by cutesipie finishes to many major statements gets a little distracting after awhile. But, the points made and the education enhancement I received made putting up with her 'popular' writing style.

I am not generally a fan of non-fiction, and I have not yet finished reading this (I am half way through), but so far this is a very friendly, approachable book. While the information is not extremely "in-depth", it is at a level that I might recall later, and has the added bonus of being an uplifting and positive read.

Excellent book for anyone who was interested in science as a child and had it slowly leached out of them by the public school system. This book provides and starting point for the adult whose interest has been rekindled. Her writing is a bit facile, but it's still a great read.

Entertaining, enlightening, clever. Really terrific narrative that puts much of the science world in a pragmatic easy read. Atoms, molecules, space, energy, evolution....this book covers it all.

Sometimes the best explainers of a topic are outsiders or laymen, rather than practitioners in the field. The author isn't a scientist so she can still see complex topics from the layman's viewpoint. This is, simply put, a great book. It covers not only the nuts and bolts of science (what is the doppler effect?) but the philosophy behind science (why does the scientific method do such a good job at explaining our world?)The writing is breezy and not stilted, using metaphors instead of math to explain difficult topics. The chapter on evolutionary biology is my favorite, and covers not only the mechanics of evolution but the controversy, and explains the tenets (and bad reasoning) of the Intelligent Design movement. After reading this chapter it seemed like a veil lifted from my eyes, and I got excited and yelled, "I get it!"A couple of my favorite quotes:From the chapter on evolutionary biology: "Natural selection is the force that transforms drift and randomness into the gift of extravagance. It takes the doctrinaire sloth of the second law of thermodynamics, the tendency of every system to get frowzier over time, and hammers it into a magic, all-purpose, purpose-making machine that turns around and breaks entropy at the knees."From the chapter on astronomy, talking about the search for extraterrestrials: "We are such indefatigable telecommunicators that the world and its 6.5 billion content providers don't feel like enough, and we can't help but wonder, Who else can we call?"The book is wonderful and definitely is worth reading several times. My only gripes: there is the occasional reference to some current pop culture celebrity, and I think this will make an otherwise timeless book seem dated in a few years. Also I think that the book would have been enhanced by an occasional illustration. For instance, the explanation of the galaxies flying away from each other is much easier understood if you actually see a picture of a balloon with dots on it to represent the galaxies.

Natalie Angier's The Canon was... decent. I was excited to read it since I definitely don't have a healthy grasp on science. In the beginning, she does a pretty good job writing simply but without making you feel like an idiot. As the book went on, however, I began to get frustrated. She routinely works in cutesy little rhymes and sayings that started to drive me crazy. As the concepts dealt with became more complex, her penchant for the poetic was really irritating. She would be talking about... I don't know, atoms maybe... and she would say something like "the size of a bird or this word or all the nerds in class." Please remember you're writing for adults who are intelligent and choosing to further educate themselves about science. I don't want to be driven off by cute.In the end, I still think she didn't quite simplify some of the deeper concepts to a level I was really comfortable with. Maybe I am truly a science idiot, but I doubt it.Verdict: C-

I love her work. She's one of the best Science writers around. Well-informed, presents the info very well. She has a sneaky sense of humor that keeps me chuckling while I learn.
