While I can't speak to the quality of the translation per se, I can say that the prose is quite lucid and the essays compellingly readable. The introductions to each essay are very helpful in alerting the reader to some of the idiosyncracies of Seneca's Stoicism and pointing to a broader view of the subject as well. What's more, they effectively elucidate Seneca's arguments as they are devoid of obfuscatory "academic" stylings. Finally, the footnotes at the end of each essay are both fascinating and illuminating and they further convey the sense that fine scholarship and clear thinking went into this book. I enthusiastically recommend Anger, Mercy, Revenge for these reasons and - perhaps most importantly - its continuing relevance to contemporary life.

Only buy works of Seneca from this series. Better than any other translation, it's best features are the many footnotes which helps u understand what Seneca is alluding to. Many times Seneca will use examples only his contemporaries would understand, but with these footnotes, modern readers may also.

This is a great book. It provides plenty of notes on the texts so you can understand the context of the texts.This contains three works : On Anger, On Clemency, and The Pumpkinification of ClaudiusSeneca is most known for being a avid stoic and the tutor of Nero. A basic understanding of Stoicism will really enhance your understanding of these texts which there is a little discussion of Stoicism in the intro.On Anger is a philosophical text on the pitfalls of anger. It was actually written for some male relation of Seneca, his nephew maybe? For this being a text translated from Latin, it is really easy to follow. In general, I find Senecan writings translate a lot nicer than other Roman authors. Seneca's basic argument relies on stoic principles to point out why you should never give into anger. Even, according to Seneca, if you see your mother being raped or your father killed, you should not give into anger. Overall, this work gives a real good look into the turmoil and treacherous environment ancient Rome was, especially in politics.On Clemency is just what it sounds like, a work about being clement. This work was written for Nero. However, never finished. It was started at the beginning of Nero's reign, then it is speculated Seneca stopped writing it when it became obvious Nero was not going to be a clement ruler. Once again, Seneca relies on stoic principles to make his argument for clemency. Since this was written for Nero, it is impossible to read it and not see how Nero fails. Though Seneca certainly works through his Stoic values in this work you can really see how he turns them to appeal to Nero's vanity. Such as repeatedly painting a ruler, i.e. Nero, as a God, such as making Rome to be a body, and Nero the head, such as making one of his largest points for clemency that it is most beneficial for the ruler to be clement.Lastly, the Pumpkinfication of Claudius, this is probably my favorite Latin text I've ever read! This deals with the deifying of Claudius, the previous ruler before Nero who was his step-father. Basically, when an emperor died, the senate would vote to make him a god. So this is a parody of Claudius' journey into godhood. Note, that Seneca was not a fan of Claudius at all since he was exiled by him. Basically, this work utterly cuts Claudius to shreds. Very humorously it criticizes Claudius for killing many of his relatives, just being an overall idiot, marrying his niece, loving etruscan culture, writing histories, and just so much more. Seriously, this is a great work and it is such a contrast to Seneca's philosophical works like On Anger and On Clemency, and even his tragedies that still take a serious note in Stoicism. If anything, you can enjoy the contrast in Seneca's writing to these other two.Overall, this was a collection of Senecan works that had nice introductions to help understand them better.

The only reason I gave the book a 4 is because it didn't have page number so whenever I wanted to refer to a page in class it would be impossible!!!

Sad, the Chicago volume has front and back covers that bow excessively due to thin paper stock. This problem is further exasperated by the lines of text on the left side running deep down into crevasse of the opened book.

I have read a few books, dale carnigie, van fleet, and accidentally stumbled on this. I have know idea why more people or search s don't mention this guy, he is outstanding. Easy to read, easy to follow his thought process, no fluff, all meat and potatoes - every sentence has alot of meaning. Don't let the publication date scare you, its the most current up date book on the market. I accidently found this through a amazon recommendation and bought it because it was cheap. I just read, and reread, helping at work alot.

This is based on the book, but not the better version that I got at Audible. The book is excellent and wears well with time. People's nature really doesn't change with time. People are mostly interested in themselves. People want things. The things they want may change, but not the needs they are trying to satisfy.The book is five star, the Audible longer and different version is better than this one, but even with outdated examples you will find this version helpful if you are knew to the book.

I love the fact that he considers this book unfinished unless we apply these principles of dealing with people to our own accord by writing it down. He even give us a guided worksheet at the end to write down what improvements need to be made on a weekly basis. It is a timeless book. I love it

The basic principles this book explains are timeless and foundational to working with people. Anyone who has to interact with people will find value in this book. Having the knowledge of how to interact with people is only half the battle. Executing these principles is a challenge in itself.The language is a little bit outdated and brings you back to a time without the high pace of technologically enabled communication that we have today, but the underlying principles of human nature remain unchanged. This is an easy read and worth the money, especially if you can find a used copy.

Excellent book. I now have my 13 year old reading it and he thinks it is awesome. His exact words were "This is going to be very useful for me. I didn't think I'd like this but this is good stuff!". lol Def a must read if you are trying to improve any area of your life.

If you've read Carnegie, then this book will serve as either (i) a stimulating refresher, or (ii) merely a supplement to the archetype. Some good factoids and anecdotes throughout, but also occasional disagreements with Carnegie that were never fleshed out (I understand, given the date of publication, it's a moot point, but one that nevertheless left me wanting more). Overall, a quick read that's worth your time, but I will always be going back to Carnegie's edition in a crisis.

Appreciation, which really means to raise in Value, not lower in value. People Act or Fail to act, to enhance their EGO.In Chapter 6 he writes about a cure for incorrigible children. This whole book is just fantastic as you can see from the reviews. I have read and reread this book over and over and have bought this book over and over to give to friends and relatives. Their are two books that have changes my life, this book and How to Develop your Thinking Ability, By Kenneth S. Keyes, and I haven't been the same since.A little gift I would like to give to all of you, It costs nothing, but creates Much. So, I almost quit the series at book four thanks to the inconsiderate person that did not mark their review of Omega as a spoiler(it's a big one too). And, Amazon has the whole review showing on the book page so I couldn't miss the OMG at the end of the review. However I love Sienna and felt I needed to keep reading. I knew Siena was going to have to go through some rough times, but in this book it really hurt. I just hope she is able to get through this and still be herself after. I'm glad I continued with the series and I hope I will enjoy the rest of the books as much as the first few.

I really enjoyed the first 3 novels in this series. They might be classified as Teen books but even we adults enjoy something a little less emotional or a little more light hearted once in a while. In the first 3 books you could tell the author was starting out this great story.In the fourth book you can really tell the author has found his rhythm with the story line. The characters have so much more depth and are much more interesting. AS for it being a Teen book, being less intense, emotional or lighthearted. This book blew that out of the water. Every chapter was fraught with emotionally challenging events. Some were scarier and more violent than I expected. It was a great, if disturbing, surprise.The main character finally becomes a young woman no longer afraid of making her own decisions and by the end of the book, no longer under the dominance of a cruel mother. This was the one person she had to come face to face with to finally break those chains of bondage. This scene is both poignant, suspenseful and very different from how I thought their conflict would come to a head.I'm getting ready to read the 5th book in his series. I can't wait to see what happens now to these wonderfully different characters I have become emotionally involved with. I recommend this to Teen's and to anyone who ever wondered if there was something to all those stories we were told as children about mythical creatures, of human beings with superpowers, stories of things going bump in the night and finally, of mythical creatures sent here to protect us.IF any of this sounds remotely interesting, get the "Girl in the box "series written by Robert J Crane. You will not be disappointed and just may find yourself a new "favorite" author.I'm off to start my marathon reading of book 5...I'll let you know how it all turns out. Well maybe not all. Somethings are better discovered on your own….. Enjoy Reading!!!!Thank you R.J.C for another great book. Wow. Just, wow. I just finished The Girl in the Box, book 5 titled Omega. This is one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. And, damn it, I cried... a lot!My 5 star rating is based upon the fact that this book means we are half way through the series, which means things have to racchet up before settling down. And boy has that racchet gone up a million notches. Because of the pacing, the format in which Mr. Crane has created when telling this story on a series, the emotions portrayed by the characters (and by me), and the actual world that has been created by Mr. Crane, this book gets a solid 5 star rating from me.Thank you, Mr. Crane, for telling us this amazing, fast paced, and most exciting tale.

As you read this story you start giving the characters faces, voices, personalities and most of all everyone holds a different place in your heart. There are some you want to choke others you would like to kill and a hand full of them become suspicious as you play this out in your head like a movie. But most of all you fall in love with some people like going to a 2 week sleep over camp as a child. You're homesick for 2 days tops and after the 2 weeks you don't want to go home. Well I said all of that to say you feel all of these emotions in this series. If you have ever followed a tv series or soap opera the feeling of I wish I could watch next weeks episode right now or I wish it was Monday tomorrow on Friday LOL. It is addictive a must read series. I will start reading book 6 right away I wonder what Sienna will get into next.

The battle is upon us in book #5. Sienna had been made the group leader of Kat, Scott and Reed. The pieces are being put into place. We find out who is the leader of Operation Stanchion, but who is he really? Is Omega sending out the troops? So much is happening in this book. The characters are being better developed. (Wow! Old Man Winter) Why am I crying so much? Does this book live up to the meaning of Omega? Things don't seem right to me! Deception, betrayal, things gone so wrong. I'm too invested to give up now. I've got to endure to the end. Sienna!!!...Recommend...Yes! Please try to read books #1- #4 first if only to get background information and get better understanding.After thought...I do love all the movie references Mr. Crane has put in the Girl in the Box series. Funny at times.

This is such a delightful series of compelling characters. I started out with a box of 3 and had to have more. V book actually invoke such an emotional response from me it was unexpected. I must admit that I have no words to express the commentary on which author put at the end of the book. Definitely unique approach and I loved every minute of it.

TO My Sci-fi people this series will not disappoint..... you will laugh and cry the best read I've had in a while and the twist and turns keep you wanting more. I think they should turn this into a sci-fi series I would definitely make sure in watching

I LOVE this series and I've never read this genre before. I can't stop reading these books. Only complaint is that the author broke the series up into too many books. It's unnecessary. Unfortunately I'm hooked, so I will keep on buying and reading.
