The Collector’s Apprentice: A Novel, by B. A. Shapiro

Review

“Shapiro delivers a clever and complex tale of art fraud, theft, scandal, murder, and revenge. [Her] portrayal of the 1920s art scene in Paris and Philadelphia is vibrant, and is populated by figures like Alice B. Toklas and Thornton Wilder; readers will be swept away by this thoroughly rewarding novel.”—Publishers Weekly “Lush, atmospheric . . . Shapiro’s romantic and suspenseful art thriller will delight historical- and crime-fiction fans.”—Booklist “B.A. Shapiro is back with a platinum potion of art, love, and scandal, set against the big backdrop of Paris between the wars. If you can put The Collector’s Apprentice down, you’re made of stronger stuff than I am. I read it in one sumptuous sitting. This is a big story, from a big talent.”  —Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of The Deep End of the Ocean “Dazzling and seductive, The Collector’s Apprentice is a tour de force—an exhilarating tale of shifting identities, desire, and intrigue set between 1920s Paris and Philadelphia. Shapiro is a master at melding historical and fictional characters to bring the past alive on the page, and in The Collector’s Apprentice she has forged an exquisite, multilayered story that maps the cogent and singular fire of a young woman’s ambition and the risks she will take for the sake of art.”    —Dawn Tripp, bestselling author of Georgia “I was engrossed in every twist and turn in this compulsively captivating page-turner, all the way until its astonishing denouement. Shapiro has done it again!”—Thrity Umrigar, bestselling author of The Space Between Us “A seamless blend of art history set against a wider historical backdrop.”—Detroit Jewish News   “In prose lush with post-Impressionist art history, Shapiro's intriguing novel presents a heroine either evil or sympathetic—until the very end.”—Shelf Awareness   “Shapiro packs her novel with intrigues and mysteries . . . Readers will . . . be charmed.”—Chapter16.org    “B. A. Shapiro delivers another dose of art history, wrapped tightly in a thriller.”—New York Journal of Books   “Shapiro creates a complex, detailed, and historically-accurate world, and the lack of any straightforwardly heroic characters, along with a superb depiction of the glamorous 1920s Parisian art scene, makes this novel a standout among dark, twisting historical mysteries.”—San Francisco Book Review

Since I absolutely love The Art Forger, I was looking forward to a similarly engaging story. While well written, the book’s main characters left me cold and disinterested in their development. Perhaps it was the author’s intention to portray them as disagreeable and manipulative; if so, she succeeded. It was hard slogging to finish the book because I really couldn’t care about what happened to the characters.

I loved The Art Forger and The Muralist. Her third novel fell short. The assembling, displaying and “looting” of the Impressionist and Post Impressionist paintings owned by Barnes should have served as an exciting backdrop for an art-focused historical fiction. Her insight into Matisse and what he and his peers were trying to achieve was well done. By Barnes was inadequately developed, and his relationships with his wife, chief of staff and the key patrons of the Philadelphia Museum of Art were disappointingly shallow.

This is the most interesting book I have read in a long time. Wonderful, complex reading for those interested in art, art history, aesthetics, the 1920s decade...the list goes on. Shapiro has a fine hand when it comes to the English language; she wields this admirable asset deftly and effectively. Example: Descriptive passages allowing the reader to visualize. She challenges the reader to keep up, and this is one of her many strengths. Example: Moving the story through time and space with ease and facility. The story includes many historical characters who speaks as they would have spoken. Warning: Do not start this book at bedtime. You won't be able to stop. I loved it.

I love the premise of the novel, and the way fact and fiction are interwoven. Clearly, Shapiro did a lot of research. I am an artist so I did not have to look up any of the artworks. However, Shapiro used a lot of cliches and skimmed too quickly over some parts. I felt like her editors/publisher gave her a word limit and super tight deadline. I would much prefer to read a book that is twenty pages longer and have it go smoothly.

I anxiously await books from B AShapiro after reading The Art Forger, which was so good! The Collectors Apprentice is not at the same level....I didn’t find the characters that interesting or appealing....they seemed very flat. The pacing seemed forced, all in the service of moving the story along but not particularly interesting. It maybe was a fine book but I started with higher expectations for it so was a bit disappointed.

I was disappointed in this book it was not nearly as captivating as her earlier books. I found the language too simplistic and the plot boring. And I usually love books about art and art history. This one I put aside half read

In an atypical afterword for an art history novel, Shapiro describes what is fact and what is invention in her story. Which shouldn't encourage us to read historical fiction as merely dramatized history.

I love the way this book mixed facts with fiction in the art world. It was a fast enjoyable read. As usual I am never disappointed with this author’s writing and look forward to her books.

From the Author

Mysterious, magical, and mesmerizingly beautiful, mermaids have enchanted humanity for thousands of years. No matter where you go on Planet Earth you'll hear stories of the elusive and evocative sea creatures, who are sometimes benevolent, sometimes destructive, but always alluring. They swim the seven seas, splash about in rivers and lakes, and even frolic in fountains and wells. And these tantalizing creatures play a more important role in today's society than you might think. Some researchers theorize that we're drawn to the dichotomy of light and dark that mermaids embody. These lovely ladies are simultaneously desirable and dangerous. They can bring good luck or disaster. Seafarers have long swapped stories about mermaids charming sailors with their heavenly singing, then smashing their ships and drowning the hapless seamen. Mermaid myths usually depict these sensuous sirens with a dual nature--they can be benevolent or malevolent, depending on what mood they're in at a given time. Like women, it's a mermaid's prerogative to change her mind--and when she does, watch out! As you explore the history of mermaids in the pages of this book, read the scores of colorful myths and legends about sea-beings, and chuckle at some of the oddities associated with them, you'll find yourself intrigued by these beguiling beings of the deep. But as you dive in, be careful. You never know what mysteries are lurking in the fathoms below.

This is a lovely little volume that provides a nice overview of mermaid folklore and legends that includes a good cross section of mermaid interpretations from the perspective of different cultures and belief systems as well as culturally different styles of storytelling about the creatures. Part 1 of this book gives a general summary on mermaid attributes, looks and behaviors.Part 2 of this book covers the different impressions of mermaids based upon geographic locations. As it turns out, mermaids have their origins in the ancient world and like their human counterparts, have various characteristics that correspond to their particular regions, based upon lore and belief systems. This section covers locations that include Australia, Africa, Europe and Britain, the South Seas and the Americas. This is not a comprehensive guide but it does give the reader a good education on merfolk of the world and their origins as well as their impact on modern culture.I am impressed by the book’s presentation. This is a small hardback book with a light sea green cover, gray artwork, and the title embossed in gold. The interior is composed of off white, recycled-type paper with teal green printed text and lovely illustrations. This is a quick, absorbing read that was very interesting and left me with the desire to learn more about these fascinating creatures.Recommend.

Very interesting book since I have not read much about mermaids. I am giving it to my granddaughter who is a mermaid ( really) . The illustrations are beautiful but I think my granddaughter's tail is prettier. Highly recommend this for anyone interested in mermaids, a fun and interesting read

Bought as a gift. I didn't read it but it is cute and I am thinking of buying another one to start my own collection of The Myths, Legends and lore collection.

Loved this book! Started reading it as soon as it arrived. It was a complete impulse buy for me but I'm very glad I purchased it. If you love mermaid lore, this book is for you. The illustrations are very pretty and it also introduces you to other mermaid books which is great!

Tons of facts and legends on mermaids and where they came from. Just what I was hoping for.

If you have a huge obsession for mermaids like I do then this is the book for you. I read a little every night before bed. It goes over what mermaids were called all over the world.

Bought this for a friend who loves mermaids, super cute book with beautiful illustrations! Worth the price for a mermaid lover!

It's printed with blue text and illustrations as well. Not that it matters much, but I think it ties the book together nicely, in terms of looks. In terms of content, I couldn't be happier! It was exactly what I hoped for, in terms of information! The title does not lie, there is myths, legends, lore, and more. If you want a book that you can drown yourself in information with, this is it.

After reading various opinions and recounted behavior of Anderson by some of her colleagues, and then reading this memoir, it is pretty obvious she wasn't just shy. She seems to have always envisioned herself more on par with the adults in her world. The way she wrote many scenes with a script treatment and took extensive care to use "shop talk" throughout the book is like an emphasis of who she wants is to see her as... The professional actor who was just too adult and consummate to be bothered with associating with the other kids on the TV production. All the relationships she discusses are with adults and the daughters of the head of NBC and such. The other noticeable element is she extensively (and somewhat monotonously) describes the plot of every episode in which she plays a major role. Occasionally, these evoke minor "behind the scenes" details, like when she was also filming a TV movie for which her nails have been painted red, and Landon noticed and asked her to remove the polish. Even though she can't (because there isn't time) she agrees and then hides her fingernails inside gloves, which she later removes inside a craft trailer to get a soda (Tab, as if we wouldn't have guessed, as Anderson apparently started a diet when she got the part as Mary at age 11 and never stopped) and is startled to find Landon there smoking a joint. This apparently is a huge let down for a now-adult Anderson, even though by now she has already recounted her awareness of his drinking, affair (and divorce), and "mean streak" (which seems to manifest as practical joking and giving honest feedback, such as his belief Anderson won't win the Emmy for which she was nominated - not because he doesn't believe she deserves it, but because of a theory he has about their selection process). Also, having now been a steadily-working actor for eight years, with everything else it's a little difficult to believe Anderson would think smoking a doob would be a shocking thing to find Landon doing. It reads like trying a little too hard to recount dirt on Landon. Plus, where is the resolution of this story? Did he see the nails? Did he seem he couldn't say anything because he was caught lighting up? It just ends abruptly.By the end of the book, it becomes pretty ridiculous when, after spending a good part of the book describing the frustration of the classically trained Karen Grassle at constantly getting a repetitive one or two lines throughout the series, she then portrays Ma and Pa Ingalls as the stars of the show. If one had never seen the series or read the books, one would have the distinct impression that Anderson and Landon were the two leads in this series, but due to humility, she defers to Landon and Grassle as the stars. Melissa Gilbert is mentioned occasionally (as it would be impossible to leave out the actual star and primary protagonist of the series) but only as often or less than the other supporting characters. It's as if she is attempting to will away any of her perceived competitors in her book, as it seems she also did in real life.If you're a fan of Little House it's worth a read, as her POV can be occasionally interesting and unintentionally amusing.

This book is richly deserving of every one-star review it has received, and here's another one.As many, many other reviewers have pointed out, the book truly is a collection of 'Little House' episode descriptions, punctuated by Missy's chiming in here and there about how great she felt she was in this one or that. It has always been a huge pet peeve of mine when actors refer to their characters as "me" or "I," and she does this to the extreme. There is next to nothing about her personal life. She would appear to be an automaton who has also been programmed with a catty streak. If you're a hard core LHOTP fan, read Alison Arngrim's "Confessions of a Prairie Birch," and then read it again until something else comes along. But don't waste your time on this, and certainly don't waste your money.

Sorry to say that I really didn't enjoy this particular book. I had hoped for insight into Melissa and her experiences, particularly with LHOTP, not an episode guide. And, the show synopses I could have written myself, or anyone could have found out by reading the Wiki episode guide. The few interspersed antidotes are far and few between, while honest (I assume...) are not insight into herself, which is what you would expect in a biography, but of the "cheesiness" of the scripts, and the few personal stories she did relate, are are self-praising to the point that it becomes a turn off.To call this a memoir or an autobiography is a gross overstatement. There is little personal information at all, it's more of am expanded IMdb listing than anything, so if you're considering a purchase hoping to gain some insight on her experiences as an actress, particularly regarding LHOTP, I cannot recommend it at all. The few personal experiences shared with the readers are written as though they were an actual script, including set descriptions and stage directions. A very odd way of doing so, but I think she needed to fill more pages with SOMETHING, and the way a script is spaced out filled up more pages in the book.If you really need to read it for yourself just to be sure, I'd highly recommend using the Kindle Owner's Lending Library (if it's available there) or through your local library, rather than spending the $10 on this book. I think you'd be as disappointed with it as I am, especially after reading other cast biography / memoir's which are true biographies or memoirs of the women who wrote them, which is what I had hoped for in this book. I really disliked that 3/4's of the book is episode synopses, which certainly have their place. If the book had been written as an "insider's episode guide" (and I think there would actually be a market for that actually, but then she should include all of the episodes she was in) I would have bought that, and enjoyed the few tidbits thrown into it and been satisfied. But as a biography or memoir, it falls short of the mark.

if you are a big fan of the show............this book is not good at all, she reviews the shows as if you've never seen them.most of this book is cliffnotes on the shows. You could take a quiz after this book and know the plot of all episodesthat featured her. I hated this book .... not worth the read at all. very disappointed.

The book is less personal reflections or insights than an ongoing synopsis of storyline a from the show. A bit disappointing.

Pretty boring compared to Melissa Gilbert's "Prairie Tale" but then I think she avoided much of the drama/drugs scene. Wanted to read about her relationships with other child stars of the 70's and her relationship with Frank Sinatra Jr but she gives NOTHING away, saying "He was a great guy". Not exactly compelling reading but I liked some of the rare tidbits about Little House, when she wasn't quoting line by line actual scripts from the show (really? yes really!). But having said that, if you were a Little House fan you'll want to read it.

I feel like Phoebe is an actual friend of mine (she's not, even though I live for her IG feed!) - Her tone in the book is conversational, light and extremely funny - even when covering serious topics like race, and intersectional feminism. She brings you into her world in a super intimate way, but just before she gets too serious - she launches into a ## hashtag laden rant. Did I laugh out loud on a cross country flight scaring the others in my row? YES. Did I learn something about how to be more inclusive in this world? YES YES YES Am I now obsessed with her podcasts (2 Dope Queens and Soooo Many White Guys)? YEEEEPPP. This girl is so honest, real and funny. I'll be preordering all of her future content....

Clever and deceptively thoughtful book. Phoebe is a wonderful person and this book is a blast through her mind and world. Love it! It's an easy read for people who want their books brainy.

She’s brutally honest and hilarious but this time she touches on some real ish. I loved it and look forward to more books from her.

I just started reading this book- it's captivating, funny, honest, & definitely relatable.

It’s an ok read. Didn’t finish it though

I have never laughed so hard while reading a book. Phoebe is equal parts hysterical and smart, and I live for her life commentaries. I read this in 24 hours. Highly recommend.

This book had me laughing and nodding my head cause its full of truth! I liked this one way more than her first one.

Dust cover on book arrived ripped. Other than that, I’m excited to read it. I love Phoebe!
