This is so much more than a history of Kit Carson. This isn't a history of innocent Native Americans being victimized by evil white people. This is a complicated portrait of a man who both lived like a Native American, married and had children with a Native American and ruthlessly slaughtered Native Americans. This is the story of the real West, not a romanticized version of Indians or the Americans who settled the West.

Remember the old Tonight Show when Ed or Johnny would drop a factoid and the other would reply "I.did.not.know. that!"? Found myself doing that a lot as I read this even though I thought I knew a good bit about this historical period. Details related to the Mexican War, Western settlement, Civil War, Indian Wars, and the Fremont expeditions I thought I had down but was continually impressed as the story emerged. Kit Carson I was only slightly familiar with but sure know him a lot better now. Fascinating material, told from a variety of viewpoints and perspectives and written in a novelistic style that held my attention. If my history books were this well done in my school days I think I would have been a heck of a lot better at staying awake. Great book by Sides, one of my favorites of the year.

This is a great book about how the West opened and closed at the same time. The reason we as a culture deify this time period, is because the most unlikely of souls, like Kit Carson, find the space and time to become great men and achieve great things, which could never happen in the strangulated East. Also, it is the only time in which men capable of recording events met with native peoples at their height just before the induced decline. The author does a great job of balancing perspective, which is tricky given the subject matter. This is an ugly time in history. I personally found the balanced perspective well handled.

My knowledge of the history of our Western expansion and, in particular, our dealings with Native Americans is very limited. In the last year I've taken steps to correct that deficiency by reading a few excellent histories in that subject area. This book does a great deal to help with my ignorance. It is an excellent treatment that is both engaging, well written, and thought provoking. Its focus is primarily on Northern New Mexico and the Four Corners area and while it is a history of that area it is also a rather full biography of Kit Carson. One of the reasons I enjoyed the book was because my wife and I have enjoyed a few vacations in this area. It is always fascinating to read about how places that you've visited had a role in the history of that area. In any event this book, like others I have recently read illustrates what a sad period of our history this is. The clash of two cultures and the search for a reasonable solution. On the one hand the primitive and violent Native American people that had no written language, little art, no architecture and absolutely no authoritative governing structure. These people had a way of life as hunter-gatherers and raiders that was unchanged for unknown numbers of generations. Opposing them were the encroaching Whites who were vastly more advanced technologically but were not so far removed from their primitive natures that it couldn't be resorted to in short order. Neither side had any understanding of the other and resort to violence was the usual result of this ignorance. Carson seems to have a better insight than most based on his years of association with various Indian tribes. His epiphany, however, occurs only after decades of exploits bathed in blood and scalps. The truth is that this culture clash was an example of cultural Darwinism. Unless the Native population could adapt and evolve to meet the changing times they were doomed to extinction. Of course the Indians abhorred change and revered the "Old Ways" and their traditions so change could only come by force. After reading this book I started to wonder how our native peoples might have evolved had the whites left them alone; if Gene Roddenbury's invention of "Star Trek's" Prime Directive had been in force and adhered to. Of course the same speculation could be made for the people of sub-Saharan Africa as well. But that was never to happen. The European tribes evolved more quickly and in different ways and overran the planet infecting these less advanced cultures who either joined the parade or got stamped into the earth. Unfortunately, that was the fate of the Native Americans. If there was a more reasonable solution to be had at that time I can't see what it might have been.

Very good. Well-written and comprehensive. I had always viewed the Navajos as a peaceful, agrarian people. This book demonstrates their history as warriors. Also provides nuance on the role of Kit Carson as an Indian fighter and the nature of the conflicts from that era generally. My only criticism is that the book could have used some maps to make it better. Interesting insights on the Anasazi and the other tribes in the southwest as well. Highly recommended.

A very comprehensive history of the conquering of the west and southwestern United States. By using Kit Carson as the focus of the book the history takes on a personal aspect and examines the life of one of the frontier's greatest mountain men. Having traveled and explored much of the Southwest myself I could easily see the places that Sides was describing, whether his reference was modern or from the 19th century. Sides is an honest historian and doesn't hide from the shameful acts perpetrated against the Native Americans. Neither does he portray the Native Americans as blame free. or characterize them as the "noble savage". For me, this was as good as a history read gets.

I gave this book 5 stars because it was a very interesting book to read and it was hard to put down. I liked the author's style of writing. The fact that he tried to make all of these people that are part of our history reachable to the reader as real people, something that we can understand, in real time as much as possible made the reading so interesting, as if you were there, watching history unfold. He did a good job in writing it . It's very interesting. If you're interested in the American Wild West, as it was called, or stories about Kit Carson , the Indian "wars," etc, it's a good book to read, worthy of your time.

The story of Ron Hall and Denver Moore takes a new look into the mind of a homeless man who’s spiritually filled and a wealthy entrepreneur who is struggling with spiritual strength through his wife’s illness. The book is moving, engaging, and it overall forces the reader to really think about if they’ve served others with the love of Christ as much as they can. If you’re wanting a closer look into the lives of those who are in poverty, look no further. This book perfectly exemplifies how you never know someone’s true story. This story takes you on a journey of self contemplation as it makes you think about your own actions in life and how you treat other people. More often then not, we tend to overlook the outcome of our actions, this book covers how one man’s life has helped thousands. For me, it was cool to read about how this took place only 20 minutes from where I live. It was nice to be able to relate to some of the scenarios these people went through based on location and how they went about life. This must-read is definitely a emotional ride through these people’s lives, and the amount of love and compassion I built for these people as I read through their life was a very personal traverse. I enjoyed reading this book and I know you will too. It’s a very personal and engaging story full of passion, joy, confusion, anger and peace. A life-changing story. How anyone can possibly read this book without a profound change in both mindset and lifestyle, is beyond me.There are many stories of wives living a deep faith without sharing it with their husbands who are so busy providing for the family and short on timeor possibly just not interested in matters of faith and volunteerism. This husband was different because he went along reluctantly with his wife.He was a Christian too, but his faith was just not as deep as his wife's. Her activities were o.k. as long as she did her volunteering 'on their side of the tracks'.The other half of the story is a homeless drifter born in the deep south and enslaved in the "boss man - share cropper system". Orphaned at a young age, shifted from relative to relative, absolutely no chance for education, doomed to work for the boss man for his bare existence.Until the day he decided to break loose and hitch a ride on the railways, joining the group of drifters from one place to another, more often than not hungry, sleeping under bridges, begging on street corners for just anything to eat or alcohol to drink - always hungry and/or drunk.. a bum , an outcast. That is until God and Debbie intervene.. Debbie hears of a Mission for the homeless in their city and is determined to volunteer there. Her husband Ron agrees to go with her, but mainly to protect her from the unsavory homeless (his attitude), God's children (her attitude) Debbie has never met a stranger, but Ron has met many.There is one particular man that Debbie urges her husband to befriend, and therein lies the story. As the pages turn and as tragedy strikes, I shed many tears and vowed to see the homeless in new lights, they are human, God's children, who one day may have had a family, and now just need a touch from a compassionate heart. Denver, the homeless man Ron befriends, will warm your heart. Well written, absorbing. and life changingwith not a dull moment.

Have a box of tissues handy... I purchased this Kindle book after seeing the trailer for this movie that's coming out in a couple weeks. The last book that affected my "faith" (not "church-going" faith but personal "faith") this deeply was "The Shack". I've read criticism of the "punctuation" in Denver Moore's portion of the book. Understand that this book is written as though the authors are sitting next to you sharing their very personal story in their day-to-day conversational manner of speaking - and I am SO glad it IS written this way. It makes this book very poignant and deeply personal. I read this book in two evenings - I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book if you want a reason, in the troubled times we live in, to get up and go forward tomorrow morning.

If you ever wanted to learn how to use Linux for heavy-duty data recovery, this is your book! It really is a one-stop shop for learning how to use Linux to secure and utilize data on a hard drive. With that being said, you need to know Linux well to be able to use this book. It is assumed that you are comfortable with command-line Linux before you start using this book. That means that there will not be a lot of exploration of the Linux operating system itself. If you are not comfortable with Linux, I would recommend that you take the time to learn it using the many online guides before tackling this book. It will make your understanding and appreciation of this book much deeper. I am moderately competent with Linux, so I could get the gist of most of this book, but I am definitely going to sharpen up my skills so that I can get the most I can out of this guide. I would recommend it to any data security professional and especially to anyone in forensic computer science.

This is a much needed book is singularly focused on “the use of Linux as a platform for performing computer forensics, in particular, forensic image acquisition and evidence preservation of storage media”. Bruce Nikkel writes well and knowledgeably about this subject. He keeps his focus on the imaging process and he very clearly inows his stuff. Chapters 1 and 2 cover the essentials of computer storage systems and devices and the basic elements of Linux. Beyond that, as a reader, you will need something more than a basic knowledge of Linux and a large degree of oc comfort with the Command Line. Given that, this book is a complete guide to forensic imaging with Linux, including some fairly esoteric subjects such as enabling access to hidden sectors (i.e.. HPA, DCO) and SMART logs. The experienced computer forensics expert who may be accustomed to using industry-standard commercial tools may be surprised to learn that in terms of the imaging process, everything that may be necessary can be done with free tools. If you don’t have a working knowledge of Linux, you should – and this book may give you the incentive to not only learn Linux, but to use open-source tools for at least some of your imaging needs.Jerry

It's nice to see No Starch Press publish a forensic book since their products are always easy to read and very practical.As a professional forensic examiner, I prefer to do most of my imaging with X-Ways Forensics using a hardware write blocker but there are times when I find it necessary to use linux as an imaging platform. Typical examples being devices with non-removable storage, devices with a USB interface, and RAID arrays.Eighty to ninety percent of the information in this book covers basic forensic imaging practices. Anyone who has taken college courses in computer forensics or who has taken training from one of the major forensic vendors should have covered similar material. Also, *nix admins with some data recovery training might be familiar with this material except for the parts about disk image formats specific to the forensic field like EWF/.e01 and aff. For people hoping to learn the same information on their own, this book does a great job covering this one aspect of forensics (imaging devices using linux).The remainder of the book covers a few topics or commands that even an industry veteran might find useful. Although covered sporadically in other books, it is nice to have a single quick reference for the commands used to image unusual devices like NVMe, optical, and tape devices using linux. Also, I found the sections on dealing with the various types of virtual machine disk image formats as well as the different types of encrypted file systems to be very useful.The only thing I would change about the book is the material regarding the SquashFS Evidence Container that the author is trying to promote. Every major forensic tool has its own special incompatible container (.ad1, .l01, .ctr) and the last thing the industry needs is yet another type. Granted this one is open source but still I don't see it catching on unless one of the major tool manufacturers adds support.

This is an interesting and practical book in the acquisition, management and preservation of disk images for digital evidence. It is also a technical procedural guide to using the Linux platform and open-source solutions for forensic image acquisition and evidence preservation. The author does a great job of organizing the subject matters into a logical progression from setting up a platform, planning and preparations, acquisition to post acquisition activities. It also serves as a cookbook of tasks that can be used as a reference manual later. The tools used in the book are open-source, command-line based, which promotes the practical reduction of the cost of these forensic activities.Overall, this is a very readable, well-structured guide that is well suited to both experienced forensic investigators who want to advance the Linux command-line skills in performing their forensic work, as well as Linux/Unix administrators who want to learn digital forensic skills.

I am the co-founder of a successful Montessori preschool in D.C. and founder of an in-home, Montessori microschool in northern Virginia. Brian's book is simply fantastic. As someone who is more of a business person than an educator, I just LOVE it! This book is a practical guide to successfully make a lot of money while still serving young children. What I found most helpful was his advice on how to manage finances and purchase real estate which is what I specifically needed help. This is a niche industry and, no offense, but I find that most early childhood education groups and/or certifications focus on the how to provide world class education, but fail to truly teach how to remain profitable. I know many who don't think it is possible. But, with Brian's book in hand, I have a new confidence that it can be done.

His book is full of Information, and it helps you in a lot of ways, great reading, a book that you truly can't put down, you actually want to know more, I've been working with kids for over 30 yrs, and actually didn't get far, I still have a day care, and I want to go further, may be build a small day care center, after reading Brian book, I've learned to step up. and not be afraid on getting ahead or bigger. I do recommend this book, especially if your starting a day care. I love this Book.
