I’ve known about W.E.B. Griffin’s USMC novel series for a long time, but I was leery of buying the series since I thought it might be too similar to a “dime novel” or a “formula story” series, i.e., basically the same storyline told over and over again with minor changes.“Semper Fi” came up on my Amazon Kindle recommendation at $1.99. At that price, I decided to give it a try and I’m glad that I did. “Semper Fi” kept me entranced from page one to the end. When I wasn’t reading the book, I was thinking and remembering in vivid detail about what I had just read. Very few books have done this to me.My father served in WW2. I remember looking at some of his military papers and seeing “NMI”. I thought my father was the exception at not having a middle name. After reading “Semper Fi”, not have a middle name wasn’t that unusual during that time period. If you’re interested in military history and WW2, I highly recommend “Semper Fi.” Although the book spans a few years before the attack on Pearl Harbor and a few days after the attack, if you served in the military (not just USMC), you’ll find yourself having empathy with the major characters since some of the same experiences are universal to military service.

This is a terrific book about the US Marine Corps prior to Pearl Harbor. The protagonist is a US Marine corporal stationed in Shanghai, China. He is an exceptional man in a humble position. The characterizations in this novel are first-rate and the storyline moves at a deliberate and fast pace serving to make this novel a true page-turner.Griffin plainly has a very solid understanding of life in the USMC, and this imparts an unmistakable aura of authenticity to the novel. And he manages to create many memorable characters who obviously will populate the many sequels. This is first-rate military fiction that no reader who likes the genre will want to miss. RJB.

I love these books that are not co-authored by someone else. Griffin is always an amazing writer and I come back to these and the Brotherhood of War series like I am seeing old friends once again. I have hard it in hard cover; paperback and now Kindle because you cannot take the "books" everywhere with you. The characters are well done as are the various story lines. I just wish they weren't so expensive...but what can you do?

The story line is very interesting. WEB Griffin has his own style of writing and sometimes tends to repeat information unnecessarily, but overall the books are interesting. BUT, that being said, these are old books...Semper Fi was written in the late 1980's...but they still ask, on average, at least $9.99 for each book(e-books, not hard copies). And there are no package deals to buy the series at a discount. I bought the first book "on sale" and the second one was a "deal" at $7.99...but although I did enjoy the first few books I won't spend $10 a book to finish the series. Hopefully they will have them available as e-books through my local library. I would bet they would sell many more copies if they were at $4.99 per or if there was an opportunity to buy them in bundles at a good discount like the Robert Parker books are. Just my thoughts...

Remember Those Book Reports From Your School Days....they served a purpose - they prepared you to read the collected works of W.,E.B. Griffin."The Corps" series follows a specific group of characters through the pre-war days leading up to the entry of the United States into World War II; through the War in the Pacific; and beyond into the conflict on the Korean Peninsula. Get a notebook and keep track of the characters that appear in "Semper Fi"; many reappear throughout "The Corps" series - a few notes along the way will keep you from getting lost as you progress through each of the books in the series - this is crucial if you do not plan to read each book in order one right after the other. In "Semper Fi" you are introduced to Ken McCoy; Fleming Pickering; his son Malcolm, and Edward Banning. These are the principal characters to get to know early on. It is largely through these four characters that the entire series unfolds.Having read through this series twice now, I highly recommend it as both good reading and an opportunity to combine good fiction with historical fact (hint: keep your notebook, tablet, smartphone, or other internet-accessible device handy - you will find yourself "Google-ing" often).Enjoy "Semper Fi" and the entire "Corps" series, but plan to lose some sleep-time; each book is a page-turner!

Over 20 years this is the 3rd time reading this series. If the reader is interested in a great mix of history, fiction, and the inner workings/culture of a military service, this would be a fantastic read. It is not necessary to read the series in order but doing so adds some to the experience.

I first read this book probably 25 years ago and nostalgia hit me and I picked it up again. My reading habits have matured quite a lot in that time and I’m sorry to say I didn’t have the experience I expected. The banter between characters is inappropriate at best and downright creepy at worst. Still I never read this series all the way through and that’s my goal. I still love reading about WW2 as well as historical fiction.

I OWN THE ENTIRE SERIES IN THE ORIGINAL HARDCOVER VERSION AS WELL AS THE FIRST PAPERBACK VERSION {ALONG WITH GRIFFIN'S OTHER OSS/ESPIONAGE AND POLICE SERIES} ...THIS CORPS SERIES, IS RIGHT ON THE MARK...IF YOUR LIKE ME, A FORMER 'JARHEAD', A CORPS HISTORY BUFF, ENJOY WELL WRITTEN HISTORICAL FICTION STORIES, YOU SHOULD GET ALL HIS WORKS.

Data-Driven is an excellent introductory text into the world of management consulting and its on-going transformation driven by big data and AI / machine learning. The book is structured intuitively with each section catering to specific individuals, who may have varying degrees of experience in management consulting and the use-cases of data analytics and machine learning, which effectively allows everyone to take away a tremendous amount of knowledge and best practices from it. For me, the tangible use-cases of machine learning used by consultants today was a valuable insight into state of the tech of the industry and how firms are doubling down on transforming both their client-facing and internal business operations. For those who want to better understand the consulting industry as well as those within that seek to transform and innovate their businesses, Jeremy's book is a worthwhile read.

“Data Driven” does an excellent job of exploring the technological innovations and regulatory challenges that are forcing the consulting industry to rapidly evolve. Its comprehensive coverage of consulting trends, such as the shift away from one-and-done engagements towards end-to-end delivery, offers useful insights to any incoming consultant. I particularly enjoyed the industry overviews in Chapter 1 and the consolidated strategy frameworks described in Chapter 8; the author has done a great deal of knowledge consolidation so I don’t have to. Best of all, he keeps his promise by offering a great deal of useful information in an easily digestible package.

Jeremy brings together reference material both on management consulting and data science, using a scientific approach that builds on many other authors research. This is particularly useful now that management consulting has been transformed by the use of computers and big data, and that this transformation will keep happening in the future. Data science and AI add more and more opportunities for management consultants to provide value to their client, and this book helps understand the 'what and how', and re-introduces consulting from the ground up.

Jeremy’s Data Driven is a fantastic book that introduces you to the concepts of management consulting while comprehensively delving into the core principles of consulting. The two distinguishing features of the book, compared to some of the other books available in the market, are 1) its desirable focus on the scientific and systematic approach to the practice of management consulting and 2) its emphasis on the emerging and propitious role of data science in business strategy.

This book gives a good overview of what management consulting is about, with a focus on the increasingly digital world we live in and the impact this has on the profession. I found the toolbox particularly valuable because it provides clear action points to implement the tools in practice. I also liked that there are both introductory and more in-depth discussions throughout the book because it makes the material useful to both beginners and seasoned professionals

This book provides a holistic picture of the management consulting industry today. There is a pretty good balance of management consulting frameworks and data science techniques which is important for every consultant today to know and understand. However the book is fairly long and dense and reads more like a textbook than a management consulting framework boo which consulting practitioners are familiar with.

In an age of transformations increasingly driven by digital solutions, tools, and processes the role that data plays in our ability to manage and consult those who manage is critical. Jeremy Curusku's book is a timely perspective for those who are in the midst of managing in a data-driven environment or those who are just beginning to explore transitioning their own team's thinking.

As someone with experience in both data science and business, I find this to be a great book for summarizing key lessons for quick revision when needed in daily work.

The Race for Timbuktu: In Search of Africa's City of Gold, by Frank T. Kryza

From Publishers Weekly

Kryza recreates the bold journeys through the unknown Africa of early 19th-century British explorers Alexander Gordon Laing and Hugh Clapperton, competing to find the fabled city of Timbuktu. Kryza's meticulous research of letters, diaries and official records forms the basis for affecting descriptions of the hazards and horrors the two explorers faced. Kryza, who lived in Africa for 11 years and traveled Laing's route, writes evocatively of the beauty of the African landscape and provides chilling glimpses of the barbarism of the slave trade. He also exposes the unbridgeable cultural gap between 19th-century Muslims in North Africa and the Christian explorers. But what most impresses are the sheer number of ways there were to die in Africa, known as the "White Man's grave"—malaria, dysentery, drowning, parasitic infections and heat stroke were a few of the natural threats, which paled beside the likelihood of being killed by fellow travelers, slavers, bandits or capricious rulers. Kryza (The Power of Light) starts slowly, but when the focus settles on Laing and Clapperton, readers will be eager to find out their fates. 20 b&w illus. From Booklist

Timbuktu is in the center of Mali on the southern edge of the Sahara. In the first two decades of the nineteenth century, it held the promise of wealth and fame for the first explorer to make it there and back alive. As Kryza sees it, Timbuktu assumed the quality of a mythic dream, a city paved in gold. He chronicles the 2,000-mile journey of Major Alexander Gordon Laing, an army officer with the Royal Africa Corps, in 1825. The trip across the Sahara from Tripoli to Timbuktu took more than a year, Laing's caravan facing suffocating heat and foul-smelling food. Distances were measured in days, never in miles, and at night he and his men wrapped themselves in blankets and slept on the sand. Laing was the first European to visit Timbuktu and was received by its governor in a small mud house, and Kryza himself spent 11 years in Africa traveling much of this route. His narration of Laing's perilous journey is electrifying. George CohenCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

#4,074,702 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is a fine well researched book on a portion of early 19th Century African exploration by Gordon Laing and other courageousexplorers of from the 1820's . Most of these explorers died by Arab guides or thieves or suffered unbearable hardships fromthe Sahara Desert or disease solely to be the first to reach Timbuktu and discover the source of the Niger River. The author'sability to form a coherent and convincing narrative is truly extraordinary.

The Race for Timbuktu is an interesting history of the fabled city and the Niger River. However, I would suggest that you find some maps of WestAfrica to follow the routes of the various expeditions. I read the e-book version, and like nearly every e-book there are errors in the grammar, and spelling. It is also a slow ponderous read much like the camels crossing the Sahara desert. Much of the book contains correspondence from the expeditions leaders to the British consul in Tripoli, also to tribal leaders, and the French and American consulates. The book captures the characteristics of the time period, people and terrain in much detail, including the ongoing distrust between expedition leaders, tribal leaders, the British, and French personnel. The author also covers the ongoing war of words between the French and British as to who ultimately found Timbuktu first. In the end Timbuktu was not at all the city of golden streets and walls of precious gems, but more like current day Mogadishu. Finally, would I tell a friend this is a must read? No.

A few years ago I was contacted by Deni Cooperrider, who's husband was staying in a hotel in Timbuctu. Bob Coopperrider, her husband, had discovered that the host at the hotel was Miranda Dodd. Now Miranda was the daughter of Terry Dodd who had rented our old house for some years. To a great extent Miranda had grown up on our property and with our books. I knew that she had visited Africa while she was in College, or afterward, but I didn't know that she had married a Timbuctu chieftan and that they had a hotel. Bob Cooperridder and I had collected firewood together in the 70s and shared an old Farmall Cub tractor. Bob was a teacher then but was interested in organic farming. He later edited a Tilth periodical. He eventually retired and found himself helping Africans set up grain cleaning operations and other agricultural functions. At the hotel in Timbuctu, Miranda and Bob found that they had lived on the same road less than a mile apart. When this book became available I thought that perhaps I should know more about Timbuctu. I knew that it was solely or mostly made of earthen structures and was a very old crossroad city of importance. And there was a hint of an ancient library there something like that in Ethiopia, full of ancient scrolls that exist no where else.Well, this book is not about the details of what remains in Timbuctu but about the British search for the source of the Niger River and Timbuctu. Timbuctu is near to and possibly once on the river. Africa was basically closed in the early 1800s to Westerners. And then there was that Sahara Desert to cross. Or maybe one could go up the Niger River from the coast. But no one knew where the Niger River went! This book is about the Brits who died trying to get to Timbuctu and to find the route of the Niger. Mostly they failed and suffered greatly in the process. The excrutiating British hierarchy that created these explorers is well displayed. And this drama takes place in preparation for the colonization of Africa, which followed these explorations, orchestrated by men in plush armchairs in private clubs in London. The book has a great amount of detail about the other men with boots on the ground or on camel back struggling through the sand and rocks, and drinking bad water.

Sit was a good story with footnotes to say where the evidence came from. The author told the story in detail, but in the way a story teller would tell an exciting story and with feeling for the character and places. It brings to life a story that was not well know to our modertime. The stories of Burton,Speke, Livingston, and Stanley are better known because the lived and wrote wonderful books. Now the other side of Africa's exploration by Europeans is brought to our modern times.

This is an excellent and rare historical look at the race by Western powers to control Saharan Africa. It is historically broader than the Gordon tragedy . I bought the Kindle version and, as in most cases, the maps that come with Kindles are less than useful so would suggest either have a map of Northern Africa handy or buy the hardback.

Interesting story and description of Tripoli and its politics in the 1700's. Has anything changed? Incredible that Britain sent out so many adventurers and many came to a sad ending. I also found the descriptions of the slave traders very interesting. It was fairly well written considering the book had to jump around quite a bit between explorers and continents.

I have to admit I never heard of the principles in this book. Back in the 50's and 60's we didn't study a lot of African history. The tales of the explorers were gripping. Well written and very addictive. I didn't like to pick it up unless I could devote a lot of time to it. In one sentence: enjoyed the hell out of it!

Treacherous conditions, strong characters, historical accounts, and great storytelling make this book an exciting read. Puts you there in Africa in the early 1800s.
