Am only giving this 5 stars because I can't possibly give it 10 stars. No kidding! I dissociated myself earlier this year from the JW. I was a third generation JW, born in it - 30years. Its been really tough. Oh, being shunned by people I have known for years, people I always had in my house for dinner parties. Despite the pain, I just know I can't go back. This cold treatment just reinforces my reason for leaving which was my observation of fake friendships, my lack of intellectual freedom and coldness of it all.I think I wasn't prepared, despite taking my time to dissociate it has still been a struggle. I really love this book. I have read other books on this topic but in terms of actual techniques for healing, this is the best. I love the debriefing and visualization techniques. I have immediately started debriefing myself everyday. Its a new concept and immensely helpful. I have decided to formally mourn and grieve the loss of my social structure. I also like the suggestion to take time before embracing another religion. I kind of hate the idea of church now but mostly because I feel cheated by an religious organization I sincerely believed was build on Christian love. I also like the idea that we must show compassion for those who are required to shun us, its unnatural and difficult for them as well.Despite all this, I really love the freedom and joy I am enjoying now which I never had. The painful moments are fewer and keep decreasing. Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing this book!

All my life I have rested all my faith, dreams, thoughts, you name it, on the Watchtower Society. I am a 45 year old man. Just left 9 months ago. Stopped all Wt. activity 2 months back. Just about had a nervous breakdown. For two months I cried everyday at least once, like a child who's "Mother" abandoned him when I discovered all the lies, cover- ups, scandals. I loved my life as a witness. I was a zealous unstoppable "Jehu". But that dream ended in an instant of time. The worst nightmare of any witness came true. The "apostates" were right all along! As a suggestion, I believe that these 4 books should be sold as a rescue kit for ex-JW's:Crisis of Conscience, In Search of Christian Freedom, Combatting Cult Mind Control, and this MOST excellent book!!!! I suggest reading these books in this order. Their is no book that can help you get on with your life quite like this book. Written by someone who was truly involved with the Watchtower and now a professional in psychology . This book gives practical, professional advice on how to deal with the psychopathic residue of this most deceptive cult. Escape the childlike behavior of having to answer to "Mother". Stand proud and feel good about your independence . Having been a totally indoctrinated "true believer", I am critical about many books. Some seem empty and repetitive about escaping the Watchtower. This is not like that. It has substance you can dig into. Do not waste time. Hit the purchase button NOW!

Just started reading this book and can't stop. The author gives practical advice to JWs thinking about leaving, those in the process of leaving and those who have already exited the organization. I am Stull in the process of reading this book. Actually, I am holding it right now and will resume reading after I complete this review. I recommend this book highly. Having been born and raised in a devout JW family, and having married into an equally devout JW family, I began discerning distinctions between Bible teachings and certain Watchtower teachings by the time I turned 30. That is when I began struggling with intense feelings of guilt, although I had not adopted a practice or lifestyle for which one could be disfellowshipped from one's congregation. By the time I turned 60, I realized I could no longer accept, support or recommend the JW religion, yet I was not free to pursue Christian fellowship outside the JW religion without dire consequences; therefore, I finally disassociated from JWs, yet my feelings of guilt only intensified. Psychotherapist Bonnie Zieman helped me identify two likely sources of the guilt which has plagued me for more than 30 years. EXISTENTIAL GUILT results from denying one's true self, especially when one fails to meet one's true potential, a feeling with which many JWs can identify. NEUROTIC GUILT comes from an imagined transgression such as changing one's mind on religious matters and leaving one's religion, a feeling with which most ex-JWs can identify. While existential guilt can serve as a healthy guide back to one's true self, neurotic guilt is unhealthy and damaging and is the type of guilt placed on doubting JWs by the Watchtower. If one does not understand the difference between the positive and negative types of guilt, the punitive part of one's mind (called the Superego) assumes one has sinned and deserves punishment, and one can end up unknowingly creating forms of self-punishment (e.g. depression, failures, accidents, chronic pain, illnesses, chronic anxiety, self-sabotage, etc.) Changing one's mind and leaving the Watchtower organization is not a sin, and one doing so certainly deserves no punishment! This is what I learned from Bonnie Zieman's wonderful book, and Bonnie provides many practical suggestions on how to rid oneself of such damaging guilt so that one can enjoy a happy and fulfilling life outside of the Watchtower Society. Thank you, Bonnie Zieman!

I appreciate the good advice in this book. It doesn't deal with the cults belief's so much as it helps us see ways of recovering from the control the religion exercises over our minds.

I was in this cult for 45 years. An "elder" for some 20 years. This book is an excellent portrayal of life inside, the difficulty of getting out, and how to normalize in the real world. Just as an aside, I have never been happier in my life than I am now. Freedom tastes so sweet when you've been a slave for so long! Thank you Bonnie Zieman!

Ray Gingerâ€™s intention of writing this book was to make a biography on Eugene V. Debs. This book set out to eloquently write the origins of Debs from his early personal life and into his political life. Gingerâ€™s book has become the standard on which biographies of Debs have been written. Ginger is successful in writing a well-articulated biography of the great labor leader Eugene V. Debs.Ginger begins the book with a background on Debsâ€™ life starting with his father in the 1820â€™s and moving quickly to the early life of Debs. The book is separated in four parts that detail major points in Debâ€™s life. The book outlines key themes and shows the humanity, loyalty, and charity of Debs throughout his lifetime. The book is organized chronologically from the beginning of Debsâ€™ life and places much of the focus on the political life of Debs. The main thesis of this book is that Debsâ€™ Midwestern values coupled with his upbringing led him to be a humanitarian. It also made him an excellent organizer and orator for the common person. This book contributes to the wealth of knowledge by being the first major biography of Eugene V. Debs. There are other biographies written about Debs since, but this is considered to be the backbone of other writings.Ginger wrote this book from an unbiased historical perspective. The book is written with a great deal of respect to Debs and his career. Ginger was a labor historian and he wrote from a place of sympathy for Debs, but he also highlighted the not so glamorous side of Debs. Ginger highlights very early in the book that Debs was known for his regular appearances at the saloon, his fondness of racial humor and even his bigotry. Ginger does not let his bias for labor history or Debs cloud his overall body of work and the presentation of the material.This book is a very readable book. The book has a great flow that is not hard to follow mainly because it is written in a chronological order. Ginger penned this book for the average reader. This is not to say that the book is not helpful for any historian or student. This book was written for everyone from a historian to a general railway worker. Gingerâ€™s book is impressive because he offered many different sources including thirteen pages of primary, pamphlets, selected letters, and secondary sources. Most of the sources mentioned are primary documents and letters. However, Ginger does not offer footnotes. Rather, Ginger places â€œselected chapter sourcesâ€ at the end of the book. These chapter sources are not meant to substitute for footnotes but they are given for specific quotes or important facts (460). Ginger sites the reasoning for this is for readability and for length. Much of the research was done at, University of Chicago Library, Chicago Historical Society, Library of Congress, Fairbanks Library of Terre Haute, Indiana State University as well as many other Universities and libraries. Overall the mechanics of the book is more than substantial enough to qualify this book as well

In this marvellous, well-written and well-researched book, the life and times of Eugene Debs are made accessible to the people of today (or rather, 1947, but it is equally readable now), and thanks to the Haymarket Books reprint Debs can continue to inspire all men of good will even now.The book describes every detail of Debs' life: his upbringing in a petty bourgeois merchant household in Terre Haute, IN, where he was taught the German and French romantic classics by his father (the name Eugene Victor comes from EugÃ¨ne Sue and Victor Hugo), his first jobs and union involvement on the Vendalia railway, his early leadership in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, his subsequent higher and higher promotions in the union ranks, holding office in Terre Haute in between, then the formation of the American Railway Union, the general strike and destruction of the same, his periods in prison and conversion to Marxism, and finally his political career in the Socialist Party where he made himself immortal in the annals of radical history by winning 6% of the vote in 1912, and also being the only person in American history to win a significant amount of votes while in prison (1920).Some of these events may well be known to many Americans, but many of them probably are not, and all depict the absolute humanity, loyalty, intelligence, cordiality, and charity of Eugene Debs. Indeed sometimes it is astounding how one man could unite so many virtues and be so utterly uncorruptible, leading one to become suspicious whether Debs' reputation is not exaggerated, but fortunately biographer Ray Ginger is always careful to substantiate the claims when true (which is almost always) and to apply criticism where deserved.Less known in general perhaps, even to people with an existing knowledge of radical history, are the many connections Debs had with other important people of his time: Lincoln Steffens, Robert Ingersoll, Victor Berger, John Altgeld, Susan B. Anthony, and even a short conversation with Warren Harding in the White House. Debs was never much of a theoretician, and did not read any of Marx' own works (though he knew the popularizers like Kautsky), but he had an infallible sense of the failures of both extreme left sectarianism and excessive reformism in radical movements and labor unionism, and it is rare in the course of this history of Debs' union activities that one can conclude he made the wrong decision. Moreover, much unlike many radicals today, Debs had a supreme capacity for personal love and charity, and was capable of opposing the political decisions and strategies of many other union activists without in any way lessening his personal loyalty or affection for them, or blaming them in person for their views. While an inveterate opponent of all capitalism, he was at the same time by no means a rabid sectarian, and could make himself loved and respected even by his enemies - once he so effectively inveighed against a railroad director in his own office that the director started offering him high level jobs in the company!Debs of course made American political history, not just with his prison campaign in 1920, victim to Woodrow Wilson's political terror; but also with the first campaigning train tour through America (the "Red Special"), with the highest percentage of votes in a Presidential election any left-wing candidate has ever received, and last but not least with his fierce opposition to American participation in World War I, when all tides were against him. This alone would make him a hero of socialism. But he equally deserves recognition for his remarkable goodness in his personal dealings: he refused all offers of careering and high wages, refused all attempts of union federations to lavish gifts or praise upon him, and was known for giving away large amounts of his money even when he could not afford it. When the ARU collapsed under the military terror of the American government, he personally took all the debts of the union on him, which it took him 18 years to pay off. He was even loved by all the inmates of the Atlanta prison during his stay there. Add to this his visionary and consistent support for the rights of women, blacks, and immigrants, when such things were radical even among radicals, and Eugene V. Debs indeed is nothing but an example to us all. If I had but one-tenth of the quality of Debs, I would have much to be proud of.

very good bookEugene V Debs is unknown to many in American History...and that's just terrible. It really brings to light how much of a total scum bag woodrow wilson really was...and makes you question as to why Wilson was even in the "10 greatest presidents of all time" list. Debs was silenced with the Espionage and Sedition Acts (because of his socialist beliefs) which was made because of people like him...nothing really to do with spies of foreign nations (as we think it is for). Wilson carried out lynchings, hired mobs of corporate workers to shoot and kill Union leaders and protesters....and did everything he could to stop blacks from living comfortably. Eugene V Debs fought for women...blacks, unions, the eight hour work day...livable wages, pensions, insurance, and sick leave....and he was treated like a criminal at every turn for his noble actions.

Debs has been a lost American icon. He was certainly not a perfect moral example of knighthood but he stuck to his cause in the face of the vicious Red Scares, the Palmer Raids, and the idiocy of the Woodrow Wilson administration. Debs stood up to and spoke Truth to Power and got nailed for it . Debs was also a very compassionate man as he was constantly giving away his coat, his money, and anything else that he had that some poor railroad worker or his family needed. He may be as close to Dostyevsky's Idiot as America may get. It was a pleasant discovery about Eugene Debs.

A hot mess of a book, but still worth reading. Michael Knight is now a postmodern conventionally educated scholar, and that is beginning to show. He has obviously read VERY widely and the book contains countless extremely interesting tidbits about magic and magical ideas in Islamicate tradition. But all of this wonderful research is embedded within a curious postmodern framework that can be off-putting and irrelevant to the story. The story he COULD have told is the story of magic and related ideas in the history of Islam and Islamicate culture. THAT story would have been a fascinating and interesting tour through a history that is not well known, especially to outsiders and Western-educated Muslims (like us). And he provides some of that and that is why the book is worth reading. But he is also eager to "correct" our supposed misconceptions about religion and history and too much pleading takes up too much space in this book. Then again, many people seem to want that kind of "mandatory re-education/rectification of names", so maybe you will like that part too. But personally, I would have preferred more historical details, fewer lectures about orientalism and "the clash of civilizations".Best new bit of information for me: that Ibn ul Arabi claimed he had sex with the Arabic letters in paradise. I wish i knew more about the context of that particular quote. But like many fascinating little details in the book, Michael mentions it and moves on. He has clearly read a lot, I wish he had spent more time presenting the information he has collected and less time lecturing us about how "opening space for new fields of knowledge potentially decenters traditions of jurisprudence, even forcing increased opening of an Islam outside normative Muslim legal traditions" and suchlike. Sure, that would be nice. But let us hear the story first, then we can figure out what it means for magic to be (as he describes it) "deconstructive".Not that I disagree with his project of "engagement and deep intersection", just that I wanted more of the facts, less of the postmodern interpretation.

Good book in that it shows the difficulty in deciding in Islam which is magic, as long practiced in the times as well as covering the same for Judaism and Christianity. Also fairly painless way to something about Islam;

Interesting book by a convert to Islam. Not very deep though. Shows the lack of depth of Islam itself.

Robert Ludlum was known as a master of spy novels, but I just discovered his name in an earlier book review. This reading is complex, but not without a sustained edge which kept me quite sleepless, moving from crisis to crisis. As I learned the core theory which propelled his two main characters who operated outside the spy agencies of opposing countries, I stepped back a moment, then took that leap of faith, and from there all the complimentary and opposing actions fell gradually into place in this masterful puzzle. Once or twice those actions seemed a little exaggerated, but once I had become a believer, they were easy to assimilate. This book was written before the internet and all sorts of technological apparatus' now available, yet the sharpness of apprehension is not lost. The author stood at the pinnacle of this genre during his life....and I will continue to plum the library of his works. If you like spy novels, this book stands with the best.

Definitely kept my interest all the way through the book. Some surprises, most but not all of them bad. Kept me guessing who were traitors and who were allies. The romance was there as an integral part of the story, not heavy breathing filler. I enjoyed the different portrayals of the foreign locales. As it should be, I liked the good guys and hated the villains; a testament to the skill of the author. A lot of action, all loose ends tied up at the end. All in all, a very enjoyable read.

What did I like most anout this book? At least 327 laughs* in it! It was hilarious! Had it been serious, it would have been horrible. But wasnâ€™tâ€”it was preposterous, it was silly, it was funny!!What did not like about it? Funny as it was, it was slow to develop. Real action on the main plot line didnâ€™t start for almost 300 pages. But donâ€™t let that deter youâ€”the story was fantastic (note the pun there).Another point on the plus side is the excellent Character development. it was very well done.I recommend this to all Ludlum fans or those who wannabe.P.S. This was at least my second (maybe third) read. And I am about to start my second or third read of The Road To Omaha.*327 Sound like an odd number?. Itâ€™s AT LEAST one per page.

This is the fifth Ludlum novel I've read. The later ones, like "The Bourne Ultimatum" suffered from certain excesses - meandering, repetitive plotting, ridiculuous villains and so forth. So I thought I would try this, one of his earlier works. It's pretty much what you'd expect from Ludlum - vast murderous conspiracy, lone super-agent (well two of them in this case) against the world, paper-thin characterizations, utilitarian dialogue, astronomical body count. So much so that I felt like this novel was a caricature of all of the excesses that characterize Ludlum. The climax was like something straight out of "McBain" from the Simpsons.I'll just come out and say, the plot is preposterous. I guess I don't buy into the conspiratorial view of the world. At least, this particular conspiracy didn't seem plausible to me. However, Ludlum does manage to make an interesting story, even a page turner, out of it.My other issue with this is that the main hero, Scofield, isn't nearly as interesting a character as his odd-couple partner, Taleniekov. Unfortunately, Taleniekov is kind of pushed to the margins of the story for the final act, and following Scofield for that length of time is just a bit tedious. Oh, and one other irritation, the Kindle edition has numerous typos and formatting errors.

I read this book 30+ years ago and loved it. Now, I can't imagine why. It is a good, if implausible, story; the characters are heroic. Yet, the prose is often in italics or followed by exclamation points so as to emphasize to the reader the excitement of the situation. It does not inspire me to reread other Ludlums.

Robert Ludlum is,possibly one of the greatest all time writers of mystery there is. This,book was one outstanding read. It's a,book that you will not be able to put down if you like mysteries

The unexa mined theme of relentless evil inflation is starkly evident in the ridiculously low prices and amounts set forth compared to today's prices for everything. Now, that is truly scary, because, well, inflation isn't fictional. Truth in vino, and great fiction.

Ludlum style--grips you from the first sentence and never lets go. Two bitter enemies, both the best at what they do, put their justified hatred for each other aside and join forces against an enemy so malignant and covert that it threatens governments world wide.Characters have depth--emotional, physical and mental. Plots and subplots stack up like layers on a cake, held together by historical research and intimate knowledge of human behavior. Astounding detail never dry or boring.

Generation of an ADF library JAR is sufficiently explained and that process is similar to generation of an EAR file.Although the discussions seem to focus on ADF Release 12c, most of the material is equally applicable to 11g. The author correctly assumes that most modern application developers can find menu items and development operations in Eclipse or JDeveloper without a step-by-step list of what to click. This is one of the secrets to the book's ability to be "short and sweet."Speaking of short and sweet, this book shines in its brevity (less than 200 pages), which makes the Big Picture of how the pieces of ADF fit together easier to assimilate. Another shining feature is the author's approach to the topic; where other ADF books have taken the approach of explaining features and frameworks and possible options contained in those frameworks, this book is organized around logical parts of the application and tasks you would need to accomplish.For example, instead of describing the FacesContext class in detail, that subject is introduced in a section called "Interacting with the User" because programming user interaction into the application is a task, and by the way, you need to know about FacesContext to complete that task. So the author focuses on the task at hand and explains enough of the technology to accomplish the task, which also leads to an understanding of how that technology could solve other problems. Also, the book contains copious code examples, which can be used as patterns for your own code.In addition, and this is a feature I found unique to this book, the author boldly sprinkles best practices into the discussions with words like "You should always create your own ADF business component base classes..." It's not that this is the only book that contains best practices for ADF; it's more that this book bases its discussions around best practices. The book doesn't offer you all the possible options, it just gives you The Best Way. Without this kind of advice, you can quickly run into trouble or, even worse, experience trouble later in the development process.The best practices in this book do not just represent the opinions of a well-respected, very-knowledgeable expert; they also represent the opinions of the ADF developer community, who over the years has come up with what works and what doesn't. The refined gold that resulted from many years of discovering best practices is contained in this book. In a way, that previous books have not achieved this level of completeness about The Best Way is not all their fault -- they were written while the very best practices for ADF usage were still being discovered. About the Author

Tony Russell is a music historian who has written on country music, blues, jazz, and other forms of popular music in a wide variety of publications and has researched, written, and presented many musical programs for BBC Radio. He is the author of Country Music Records: A Discography, 1921-1942 (OUP 2004), The Blues from Robert Johnson to Robert Cray, and other books. He lives in London.

Quite expensive but a very important book for anyone doing research on country music or writing articles on the same. Wish Russell would do another covering the next ten or so years. About the only negative I see is that the only Canadians he listed is Wilf Carter (Montana Slim) and Hank Snow.

The long-awaited labor of love by respected discographers and country music experts Tony Russell and the late Bob Pinson has finally been published -- and it's been well worth the wait. The comprehensive discography is everything and more a collector of old-time country music could ask for. As well as being THE reference book on old-time country recordings, this magnum opus makes fascinating recreational reading. The sheer depth of scholarship is astounding, with collectors and discographers from around the world contributing. As Tony Russell says, though, it is regrettable that Bob Pinson didn't live to see the finished book. I have no hesitation in recommending this book. If Amazon allowed it, I'd award it a 10-star rating.

REALLY USEFUL FOR WESTERN SWING

This book is exactly what I've been looking for for some time, a discography for every Country record from 1921-1942, with session dates, accompanists, if any, with what instruments played, matrix numbers and catalog numbers of records actually issued and on what labels. A collectors' dream. Same format as Dixon & Godrich's Blues & Gospel Records 1890-1943, and Brian Rust's Jazz Records 1897-1942. I was interested in Cajun reecords, which, until this volume, were not well covered.

This product came highly recommended to me by some of the premier historians in the country music genre. It's a wonderful thing, almost miraculous, that Mr. Russell was able to put together such a monster of a research project in such a user-friendly format. Kudos to him and his team! I've spent hours looking through it and find it thoroughly informative and inspiring. I will certainly use it for all future research projects.

A great source. My only complaint is that the book is physically deficient and is falling apart.

I couldn't agree more with the rave reviews of the book itself, but the Kindle edition is a disappointment. For some reason searches don't reach the actual discography entries, as if they are in graphics mode. Big problem for research.

Every detail is collected for these pioneering recording artists. Very well organized and easy to reference. It is a perfect book!
