As an R&D manager, I've spent over 2 decades of my career talking to customers, analyzing the feedback, and using it to steer product design. I've seen customer-feedback processes work flawlessly an fail miserably. This book lays out a solid set of processes to do it right, and do it efficiently. It covers a lot of methods I've learned are critical, and I found a number of new ideas I'm eager to try. Whether you're new to customer engagement or seasoned, there is something in this book for you. I feel like the word "Lean" in the title is just trying to be trendy. Yes, the book has plenty of good advice throughout on how to be efficient collecting customer input, but 'Lean' ? Lastly, ideas like those in this book are most effective when everyone on the customer team is familiar with them. A few people that don't get the memo can disproportionally dilute the efforts of those that get it. If you're serious about building products that customer excitedly pay money for, get /everyone/ on the customer team to read this book.

Wow! I normally don't write reviews...but when I do it's because I desperately want to encourage others to give a book a chance. Lean Customer Development is an easy sale for Lean Startup lovers--of course we want to go deeper with the concepts. Lean Customer Development certainly does that. I've read many critical reviews, however, about Lean Startup's relevance to specific products not mentioned in the books. If that's you--you MUST read this book!I'm coming from a service industry and this book clarifies many questions that I had about the feasibility of having a "Minimum Viable Product" or MVP. What does that even mean to a lawyer? I've seen many people misconstrue the concept of the MVP and thus, I had my doubts about applying them to my profession. Although she still uses software development as the main focus for applying the principles, Alvarez addresses the flexibility of the MVP in a clear and enlightening fashion in Chapter 7, "What Kind of Minimum Viable Product Should I Build?" Powerful stuff! I feel I understand the concepts well enough to directly apply them to my law firm. Don't get me wrong: Eric's Reis' original work, Lean Startup, is a classic. Ash Maurya's Running Lean, also a part of this Lean series, is also essential reading. Lean Customer Development, however, easily led me to a pathway of applying Lean Startup principles to my situation. Her overall message about searching out, discerning, and applying customer behavior is truly eye-opening. Alvarez truly embodies why Lean Startup works--you give yourself the freedom to tailor a product/service that customers will actually pay to experience. Novel concept. I highly recommend you read this book before making a final decision about Lean Startup!

I work for one of the largest companies in the world. We have tons of ideas, too many. What we didn't have was a way to prove that people wanted the ideas. My boss challenged me to figure that out and through this book ( and a few others in the series like UX for lean) I realized we had all the pieces in the company already, we just needed to tie it all together.As an engineer I also used to take the mindset that only the consumer research folks in the company could talk to customers. Now I try and talk to 3 a week. Ideas are rarely the issue which is the focus of many other books.I came out of too many brainstorming sessions thinking what a waste of time. I replaced those with the alignment meetings mentioned in this book.

it is a great resource to business people of all kinds. I found the idea of the book is good for innovating both startup as well as innovating existing business. It is good in both conceptualization and practical implementation. My wish list for next edition of the book is more case studies of mass consumer products. Thank you Cindy for your contribution. Hope you continue teaching us.

Is this a good book? The answer is that it depends. If you are a retirement savings novice, then this book is a good starting point. If you have read the commonly available information and done some of your own research, then this book will not add that much value.I am a big fan of "The Truth About Money", read it about 10 years ago and gained a lot of confidence in how to manage money. I don't have the same feelings for this book.A couple of specific issues:* Edelman is referring to increase in account value through Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA) in comparison with stock market performance without making it clear that a substantial amount of the value increase is from new investments. DCA sounds good in theory, but the most important lesson is that an investor should invest the money as soon as possible as the general direction of the stock market is up. In general it makes sense for salaried workers to make an investment for every pay check due to employer matching and the fact that this is when the money is available to be invested. I personally believe that DCA is hyped up.* Edelman is correctly saying that you should invest your money in the vehicle which generates the best return, which is the stock market. He then muddles the whole thing by talking about balancing and buying bonds. It is almost like someone tried to correct Edelman during the review process and that he caved in to pressure from the reviewers.* The section on spending the money in retirement is muddy and ends up with a "it depends" recommendation. Edelman should state that it is impossible to time the peak of any stock market and that investors should stay in stock as long as they can take the risk. If you have a healthy retirement account, then you can take a lot more risk than in you just have the money you need to scrape by. It looks like there is a more in-depth description in chapter 24.* There is another flaw in the sections about how to manage the money that is in the account. Edelman is writing as if old money is different from new money; nothing could be further from the truth. Money in a retirement account is fungible, there is no difference between new money or old money. I believe that this is a significant flaw which leads to confusion.* The section on Roth IRAs is weak, it fails to take into account the difference between marginal tax rate and average tax rate. It is very likely that the average tax rate at retirement will be lower than your marginal tax rate at the time the retirement contribution is made. Hence it makes sense for most people to not choose tha Roth option. There is however one exception; if you are early in your carreer and make a lot less money than you expect in retirement, then it makes sense to put the money into a Roth. As an example, if you can afford making retirement contributions while you are a student, then you are likely in the 0% tax bracket and can make retirement investments tax free.* The discussion section about moving funds from past employer 401(k) to an IRA forgets that there are some 401(k) plans that have good options and low fees. I believe that Edelman's advice is too black-and-white, IRAs are not always better. My recommendation is that each investor looks at the options available and the fees before making a move. The ETF sidebar is shallow, do you really think you should choose an ETF over a mutual fund just because it is cool and you people do it? Take a look at comparable mutual funds and ETF from Vanguard and you will see that they are very comparable.* In Chapter 22 Edelman again miss the important difference between marginal tax bracket and the effective tax rate. Your 401(k) is not worth 40% less if your marginal tax is 40%.Overall the book is a comprehensible collection of good advice, but it brings little new information to the table for people with knowledge. I recommend that the issues listed above are resolved in a re-print.

I love this book because it actually got me to understand retirement planning and get off my butt to do something about it. I'm a smart person but financial planning is very intimidating to me for some reason. This book is very easy to read and has good examples. There are some good general concepts and of course recommends getting a financial advisor for the details. He recommends his own company but doesn't make it sound like the end all be all.I think it is very much recommended reading for the young professional getting started in their career.

Very interesting book, I just started investing recently as I am a first year out of college. Reading this book really opened my eyes to how important investing in your future really is. I suggest reading this book if you need to learn about how to invest, however, I dont think this would be much help to someone who is already aware of what type of investments are available to him/her. In short, this is a book to learn about what you can do with your money, not how to invest it.

As a former teacher of 30 plus years I was always amazed at the total lack of knowledge that young adults had about money/finance.If Ric Edelman's methods were taught to high school age adults - they would be better prepared for life. Very easy reading - funny at times - a must read for people who seriously worry about their future retirement plans. All you need to read this book is common sense (it is laid out very methodically with no finance degree needed to understand)

I loved this book and actually ordered a second one for my daughter who is no where near retirement. In fact, she is a college sophomore. But the examples about the power of compound interest and such illustrate the point about starting to invest early. Ric's advice about not to invest into a nondeductible IRA is understood but I think an alternative would be to invest into a nondeductible IRA (if that is the only account you qualify for) and to cash out at the earliest possible time (without penalties), pay taxes on the gain (total amount minus cost basis) and move proceeds to a taxable amount.

I completely subscribe to Ric's Financial Management strategies. His books are concise, easy to read and give the average mom & pop the information they need to make good, long term financial decisions. If you have not read any of his books, I highly recommend starting with his book "The Truth About Money" - that is my financial planning Bible.

Great book! I originally discovered this book via YouTube. I watched the authors videos regarding this greenhouse build. My wife and I have been talking about building a greenhouse for quite some time now. After watching his videos we opted to go this route. I have since framed the greenhouse and have ordered all the necessary supplies needed to finish it. I modified the plans a little bit, we built our greenhouse with an extra cattle panel so that it is a little longer and also modified the framing plans to make it a bit more stout. We live in a suburban area and have no intentions of ever moving the greenhouse. I didn't necessarily use the book as a step-by-step process guide. I utilized the book more as a reference guide, as I modified the design quite a bit. I have read comments suggesting the book "doesn't provide enough detail" or that "you dont need the book if you watch the video's" I feel like the book is priced right and that the videos are a great addition to having the book. My only critique would be that I wish the book would have been made available in a physical form (paper back) This may have been why I used the book as a reference instead of a true set of plans.

We built this awesome greenhouse last month for our high altitude climate (9,000 feet) in Colorado. We spent a little over $200 (used 2 panels), but bought extra hardware, braces, etc. Directions are easy to follow, but a lot of it is just common sense. It's really sturdy and it's usually at least 20 degrees warmer inside. Yeah, you can get directions from YouTube, but I think this guy deserves 5 bucks for his idea. No one I know has even heard of cattle panels. Our local hardware store was even selling these as "kits" for $400. If you are thinking about a greenhouse, this is the way to go. Not real fancy, but it works. I got a late start this year, but can't wait until next season when I can finally grow tomatoes and other fun Colorado crops!

I bought this book to make a greenhouse at our home. The directions are simple and concise. The bonus is that it can be adapted to be used as shelter for animals as well as a movable chicken coop, dog pen, or greenhouse. It can also be made larger than the original size suggested. It was easy to make and ours cost us much less than the $150.00 the author spoke of. I would highly recommend this to anyone trying to build a greenhouse.

I was getting ready to get all the supplies to build it and watched the video again and saw that he had published this book, I got it, read it and will be building our green house in the next week or so.I checked locally and can get the cattle panels for about $20, 2x4's are always on craigslist and the other hardware should be easy to find at the local big box store for next to nothing.This book lays out a great plan for building a great green house and for the price, you cant beat it.Nothing in this life is perfect and I'm not just pumping this book, it is exactly what I was looking for.

It not only shows you how to build the easiest greenhouse you will ever see anywhere, it saves you lots of cash too!You get everything you need in this book, materials list, many photos, diagrams, a link to the hands on video showing you how it's done, and the real plus to me was, I can do this. No question about it.This is the cheapest greenhouse I have ever researched, and trust me, I have researched them all.If you want a greenhouse, and have little to invest, this is the book you need. I promise you will love it.

I had watched his video on youtube about building this greenhouse (texasprepper2) and therefore I bought the ebook. After pricing the materials listed in the ebook I found the prices where still pretty close to the $150.00 range. Although I'm sure if you veered from the list as in making upgrades or modification as it were, the cost would vary accordingly.But I would recommend if you decide to build a greenhouse on the cheap you buy the ebook as a helpful reference and also watch his video on Youtube.Its cheap its functional and it works for me.

This is a simple, top-notch design for very little cost. I will probably use this design for several buildings I have planned on our homestead; however, the first will be a chicken tractor. I have the skids and crossmembers in place... about to go back outside and try to finish before dark--- will probably put the metal covering on tomorrow and be ready for the chickens before the weekend. Excellent illustrations, along with clear instructions, make this Kindle book a true bargain.

This is so much more than a history of Kit Carson. This isn't a history of innocent Native Americans being victimized by evil white people. This is a complicated portrait of a man who both lived like a Native American, married and had children with a Native American and ruthlessly slaughtered Native Americans. This is the story of the real West, not a romanticized version of Indians or the Americans who settled the West.

Remember the old Tonight Show when Ed or Johnny would drop a factoid and the other would reply "I.did.not.know. that!"? Found myself doing that a lot as I read this even though I thought I knew a good bit about this historical period. Details related to the Mexican War, Western settlement, Civil War, Indian Wars, and the Fremont expeditions I thought I had down but was continually impressed as the story emerged. Kit Carson I was only slightly familiar with but sure know him a lot better now. Fascinating material, told from a variety of viewpoints and perspectives and written in a novelistic style that held my attention. If my history books were this well done in my school days I think I would have been a heck of a lot better at staying awake. Great book by Sides, one of my favorites of the year.

This is a great book about how the West opened and closed at the same time. The reason we as a culture deify this time period, is because the most unlikely of souls, like Kit Carson, find the space and time to become great men and achieve great things, which could never happen in the strangulated East. Also, it is the only time in which men capable of recording events met with native peoples at their height just before the induced decline. The author does a great job of balancing perspective, which is tricky given the subject matter. This is an ugly time in history. I personally found the balanced perspective well handled.

My knowledge of the history of our Western expansion and, in particular, our dealings with Native Americans is very limited. In the last year I've taken steps to correct that deficiency by reading a few excellent histories in that subject area. This book does a great deal to help with my ignorance. It is an excellent treatment that is both engaging, well written, and thought provoking. Its focus is primarily on Northern New Mexico and the Four Corners area and while it is a history of that area it is also a rather full biography of Kit Carson. One of the reasons I enjoyed the book was because my wife and I have enjoyed a few vacations in this area. It is always fascinating to read about how places that you've visited had a role in the history of that area. In any event this book, like others I have recently read illustrates what a sad period of our history this is. The clash of two cultures and the search for a reasonable solution. On the one hand the primitive and violent Native American people that had no written language, little art, no architecture and absolutely no authoritative governing structure. These people had a way of life as hunter-gatherers and raiders that was unchanged for unknown numbers of generations. Opposing them were the encroaching Whites who were vastly more advanced technologically but were not so far removed from their primitive natures that it couldn't be resorted to in short order. Neither side had any understanding of the other and resort to violence was the usual result of this ignorance. Carson seems to have a better insight than most based on his years of association with various Indian tribes. His epiphany, however, occurs only after decades of exploits bathed in blood and scalps. The truth is that this culture clash was an example of cultural Darwinism. Unless the Native population could adapt and evolve to meet the changing times they were doomed to extinction. Of course the Indians abhorred change and revered the "Old Ways" and their traditions so change could only come by force. After reading this book I started to wonder how our native peoples might have evolved had the whites left them alone; if Gene Roddenbury's invention of "Star Trek's" Prime Directive had been in force and adhered to. Of course the same speculation could be made for the people of sub-Saharan Africa as well. But that was never to happen. The European tribes evolved more quickly and in different ways and overran the planet infecting these less advanced cultures who either joined the parade or got stamped into the earth. Unfortunately, that was the fate of the Native Americans. If there was a more reasonable solution to be had at that time I can't see what it might have been.

Very good. Well-written and comprehensive. I had always viewed the Navajos as a peaceful, agrarian people. This book demonstrates their history as warriors. Also provides nuance on the role of Kit Carson as an Indian fighter and the nature of the conflicts from that era generally. My only criticism is that the book could have used some maps to make it better. Interesting insights on the Anasazi and the other tribes in the southwest as well. Highly recommended.

A very comprehensive history of the conquering of the west and southwestern United States. By using Kit Carson as the focus of the book the history takes on a personal aspect and examines the life of one of the frontier's greatest mountain men. Having traveled and explored much of the Southwest myself I could easily see the places that Sides was describing, whether his reference was modern or from the 19th century. Sides is an honest historian and doesn't hide from the shameful acts perpetrated against the Native Americans. Neither does he portray the Native Americans as blame free. or characterize them as the "noble savage". For me, this was as good as a history read gets.

I gave this book 5 stars because it was a very interesting book to read and it was hard to put down. I liked the author's style of writing. The fact that he tried to make all of these people that are part of our history reachable to the reader as real people, something that we can understand, in real time as much as possible made the reading so interesting, as if you were there, watching history unfold. He did a good job in writing it . It's very interesting. If you're interested in the American Wild West, as it was called, or stories about Kit Carson , the Indian "wars," etc, it's a good book to read, worthy of your time.

My emotional journey through the reading of Same Kind of Different as Me has been a truly moving experience. This book taught me to be grateful for what I have and to never think twice about helping others. The story of Ron Hall and Denver Moore takes a new look into the mind of a homeless man who’s spiritually filled and a wealthy entrepreneur who is struggling with spiritual strength through his wife’s illness. The book is moving, engaging, and it overall forces the reader to really think about if they’ve served others with the love of Christ as much as they can. If you’re wanting a closer look into the lives of those who are in poverty, look no further. This book perfectly exemplifies how you never know someone’s true story. This story takes you on a journey of self contemplation as it makes you think about your own actions in life and how you treat other people. More often then not, we tend to overlook the outcome of our actions, this book covers how one man’s life has helped thousands. For me, it was cool to read about how this took place only 20 minutes from where I live. It was nice to be able to relate to some of the scenarios these people went through based on location and how they went about life. This must-read is definitely a emotional ride through these people’s lives, and the amount of love and compassion I built for these people as I read through their life was a very personal traverse. I enjoyed reading this book and I know you will too. It’s a very personal and engaging story full of passion, joy, confusion, anger and peace. I hope that this book rekindles the fire in your heart for helping others and making a change.

How anyone can possibly read this book without a profound change in both mindset and lifestyle, is beyond me.There are many stories of wives living a deep faith without sharing it with their husbands who are so busy providing for the family and short on timeor possibly just not interested in matters of faith and volunteerism. This husband was different because he went along reluctantly with his wife.He was a Christian too, but his faith was just not as deep as his wife's. Her activities were o.k. as long as she did her volunteering 'on their side of the tracks'.The other half of the story is a homeless drifter born in the deep south and enslaved in the "boss man - share cropper system". Orphaned at a young age, shifted from relative to relative, absolutely no chance for education, doomed to work for the boss man for his bare existence.Until the day he decided to break loose and hitch a ride on the railways, joining the group of drifters from one place to another, more often than not hungry, sleeping under bridges, begging on street corners for just anything to eat or alcohol to drink - always hungry and/or drunk.. a bum , an outcast. That is until God and Debbie intervene.. Debbie hears of a Mission for the homeless in their city and is determined to volunteer there. Her husband Ron agrees to go with her, but mainly to protect her from the unsavory homeless (his attitude), God's children (her attitude) Debbie has never met a stranger, but Ron has met many.There is one particular man that Debbie urges her husband to befriend, and therein lies the story. As the pages turn and as tragedy strikes, I shed many tears and vowed to see the homeless in new lights, they are human, God's children, who one day may have had a family, and now just need a touch from a compassionate heart. Denver, the homeless man Ron befriends, will warm your heart. Well written, absorbing. and life changingwith not a dull moment.

Have a box of tissues handy... I purchased this Kindle book after seeing the trailer for this movie that's coming out in a couple weeks. The last book that affected my "faith" (not "church-going" faith but personal "faith") this deeply was "The Shack". I've read criticism of the "punctuation" in Denver Moore's portion of the book. Understand that this book is written as though the authors are sitting next to you sharing their very personal story in their day-to-day conversational manner of speaking - and I am SO glad it IS written this way. It makes this book very poignant and deeply personal. I read this book in two evenings - I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book if you want a reason, in the troubled times we live in, to get up and go forward tomorrow morning.
