Real brief review. I have tried them all. All succeeded. Some more than others.I have 4-5 books in my Audible collection on weight loss. I have read the first 2 chapters in all of them.. then quit.I read ( listened ) to this Dr Boz book and did not stop till the end.This encouraged me from trying to get the pounds off to UNDERSTANDING why the pounds went on.Once you understand... and see why you failed... it is easy to correct.I bought 2 hard copies in addition to the Audible. A friend had given up hope for his son who was morbidly obese.I seldom make assurances. I told my friend .. this would work. ALL MY FAILURES in the past were explained.It was NOT my fault. I just did not have the knowledge. My doctor had lied.His nurse practitioner closed the door, told me she would lose her job for telling me if found out... and pointed meto the direction of a Keto lifestyle. I searched the internet.. found Dr. Boz. Liked her voice and enthusiasm.. and therest is history. Don't give up... try it one more time. Give this a shot. It holds a lot of unanswered questions.Hope this helps.Cheers Ken

Dr. Bosworth is amazing! She makes this easy! If you are overweight or struggling with other chronic disease, you must read this book! "Anyway You Can" is not only a great story of heartbreak and triumph in dealing with her mothers cancer but a road map of how to successfully convert your body into a ketone burnng machine. Following her simple guides in the book and her pocket guide found @ www.MeToneLife.com, I lost over 16% of my body weight ( 52 pounds!) in just over 2 months! I also bought my parents this book and they started the keto lifestyle as well. They are in their late 70's/early 80's and both diabetic and facing increased medications...mom just had her 4th medication added and dad was on insulin for several years. Now at 6 weeks in, they are no longer dependent on medications to manage their blood sugar or high blood pressure. Thanks Dr. Bosworth!

I met Dr. Bosworth when we were both clinical faculty at USD Sanford School of Medicine and have been impressed by her passion to dig deeper into research and clinical reasoning to help her patients. Now she's drawing from that energy as an author, to produce a book with tremendous potential to help a wider circle of people than she could as a clinician. There are already plenty of sources about eating keto and how to get started; but Anyway You Can provides very helpful contextual information, including common glitches and side-effects for people adjusting to the keto lifestyle and how these can be managed. There's also a wealth of background information on demonstrated and suggested health benefits of ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting that reach well beyond weight loss. This is also a very personal book, as Dr. Bosworth interweaves health facts and commentary with the story of her mom's cancer battle that fueled her own experiments with "ketones for life." Some readers might see the personal chapters as a digression from getting their questions about ketones answered right away; but for me the personal stories are very inspiring and motivating. After all, going keto is a big behavioral change for most people; and there's always an emotional component to getting motivated for a major behavior change. Anyway You Can delivers a total package of motivation, background, and the facts you need to consider, get started, and stay inspired as you use ketones as a fuel source for your body and brain.

I kept coming across books on a "keto diet", but I ignored them thinking keto was just another a fad diet. I really don't know why I decided to click on this book to read the description -- I don't have any friends or family with cancer, and I didn't have a good opinion of the keto diet. But I'm glad I did look into this book.After reading the description, I began reading the "inside the book" option on Kindle; and when I came to Chapter 3, I was convinced I needed this book. Dr. Bosworth's writing about her exploration of the science behind benefits of ketosis spoke directly to me -- a trained biologist/geneticist. (I also checked out her research and found out that she was right!) Her explanations of the effects of SAD (Standard American Diet) on health compared with the effects of a keto diet (that stimulates production of ketones and reduction of blood glucose) on health convinced me to try it.I am very grateful to Dr. Bosworth for writing this book. I have been on a keto diet for 2 months now (and rereading parts of her book throughout the time) and feel really good. Although I have always been outwardly healthy, I know my internal health (any hidden problems that could show up unexpectedly) is improving also.The book is well written, informative, entertaining and describes, using scientific information, a path toward health that really works.

Following the rules of a ketogenic diet outlined in this book can help everyone, whether you or a loved one has cancer or not, experience the life-changing benefits of being off the glucose roller coaster and onto the ketone powered locomotive.Read this book and follow along as Dr. Bosworth leads her mother, Grandma Rose, on an empowering journey through cancer and back to good health using the power of nutritional ketosis. The way Dr Bosworth developes this book around her mom and the benefits of a ketogenic life choice makes for a compelling read. I have many medical issues that can be helped by this way of life and my journey has just begun. Thank you Dr Bosworth for taking the time to write this book.

I was really disappointed in this. The author spent the first half of the book establishing the fact that Christians are influenced by culture. That was well-done and well documented. The second half was supposed to be how Christians should respond as regards sexual relationships. Some of his statements were just plain weird; for instance: "If our sexuality is intricately connected to our spirituality, then our sexual desires must be properly directed to God before they can be healthily expressed in our sexual lives." I am not sure how sexual desires are directed to God.I was pleased when he started to talk about a theology of singleness, but I felt like he didn't develop it well. He states that married people bear God's image by relationship. Single people image God by a drive to "enlarge the household of God" because they have more friends and relationships. He encourages pastors to promote "social spaces and ministry contexts in which people's fundamental need for relational intimacy is being met and where their social/sexual energy can be expressed in line with its divine purpose. He goes on to say that is by service "without the explicit pressure of dating." That doesn't sound like a big win for singles!Parts of his final chapters are devoted to ways in which the church can help single people meet suitable marriage partners. I hoped he would deal with singleness being an honorable situation and talk about ways to help unmarried people flourish in the church.I believe the main point of his second half of the book was that we only grow and flourish in community.The author seemed to bounce around a lot and it seems like his points could have been made more succinctly.

I picked this book up out of curiosity and let it sit on my shelf for a bit. But once I finally got around to cracking it open, I was floored!The book is split into two parts. In the first section, Grant explores and diagnoses modern culture's sexual ethos. Grant has a firm grasp on the moores and social narratives of a postmodern (and post-Christian) culture, and turns to the research and expertise of Charles Taylor, Christian Smith, and James K A Smith, to bolster his already solid estimation. His conclusion is that in contemporary culture the individual is paramount, and his/her needs come before all else. As a result, meaningful and lasting sexual fidelity and chastity are rare.Part two prescribes a uniquely Christian response to contemporary culture's sexual convictions (or lack of) by proposing that the Church ought to incarnate an alternative narrative; one in which the "other" or the community are paramount, as we seek to emulate and embody the sacrificial love of God in Christ. Grant owes much to Stanley Hauerwas and Stanley J. Grenz in this respect, and with their help his case is made with stunning clarity and conviction.With the two pieces put together, book essentially functions like a philosophical/theological "State of the Union" address - assessing where we are, and projecting where we ought to be going as Christians. Sexuality is at the center of the conversation, but it's used as a crux around which larger conversations about culture and God can revolve. It all rotates spectacularly and left me with my highlighter running out of ink as I strove to capture Grant's vision for myself.But while the book is intellectually engaging and provoking, what really makes it a gem is its spiritual depth. Grant clearly has a thriving devotional life and his pastoral heart is on display here, especially towards the end of the book. Certain parts of the book read almost like devotion texts, while never straying from the academic rigor necessary to write on a topic this complex. Such a balancing act is nearly impossible to find in modern Christian literature.Grant does a phenomenal job of providing a road-map of how traditional Christian sexual convictions allow us to flourish and thrive in the context of our own hypersexualized modern Babylon. I wish every modern Christian had this book as a lens through which to view our ever-changing sexual landscape. I recommend this book regularly, and can't wait to read whatever Mr. Grant writes next!

In this case that means the culture, the social environment and the world shaped by it, with which we are in almost constant contact, and by which we are shaped and influenced to a degree far greater than we know or suspect. So, not only does the worldly world get described (probably an eye-opener for most of us); but how it works its way into many, if not all, of the fibers of our being is dealt with; also, the effect this pervading (whether absolute or merely extensive) has on us -- individually, in combinations, and collectively. In the footsteps of Charles Taylor, philosopher and author of _The Secular Age_; and possibly in step with James K. A. Smith, and his guide to reading Taylor -- _How (Not) To Be Secular_. When I've read more of it, I may add to this review. So far? Very important, very profound, very helpful; of potential benefit to virtually everyone. I highly recommend it.

Good analysis of surrounding cultural factors and an honest look at what Christians are facing with their sexuality.

This is an amazing book. I love it a lot more than I expected (it was for a class). It's great listening to it and reading along with my Kindle's text-to-speech feature.

This collection has helped me to better understand Jainist tradition and dogma. Though at times literal translations are sacrificed for clarity and fluency, the renditions of the stories are fluid and allow the reader to follow what at times can be very stilted and difficult to understand prose.Unlike "The Clever Adultress", I would recommend this collection to those with even a slight interest in the material, as it is much easier to read and understand the tradition.

Our modern notion of "superhero" very likely originates from a very primal impulse. Stories of humans becoming superhuman, or of powerful spiritual beings with semi-human characteristics, may in part help us deal with the limitations and finitude of our very fragile humanity. People often wish to be more than "mere people" and fantastic tales of any kind can fuel these fantastic desires. The question as to whether traditional tales associated with religion once played a similar role that contemporary "Superhero" stories (i.e., Batman, Superman) play may raise fire and brimstone ire in some and fervent curiosity in others. Parallels definitely exist between them, though how tenuous remains another question. In any case, anyone looking for great tales of magic, wonder and superhuman feats will find a host of them in "The Forest of Thieves and the Magic Garden." These 31 tales dating from roughly 900 - 1400 seem to provide multiple functions. In the manner of many tales (and arguably modern comic books, novels and television shows) these stories attempt to entertain while moralizing about the proper religious life. Not that they're overly pedantic, though a few do straddle this fence, but the purpose of these tales seems primarily to draw people in with a fabulous and hypnotic story while promoting the Jain way of life. Early marketing? Maybe. Most religions, and possibly all of them, utilize such techniques to increase the numbers of converts. Nothing new. What will appear new, particularly to those unfamiliar with Jainism or the vast diversity of Eastern spiritualism, is the medieval Jain ethos. One must keep the dates of these texts in mind while reading. Religions and cultures evolve, for better or worse, through time. Medieval texts, particularly a small sampling, may not necessarily represent a religion's entire lifespan or current beliefs. They almost never represent the entire culture of which they play a part, especially in one as religiously complex as India. As such, these stories represent the totality of Jainism no more than "Chronicles of the Crusades" represents the totality of Christianity. But they do have one thing in common: fascinating stories with intriguing historical dimensions.That said, modern sensibilities will find some elements of these tales distasteful, but that goes for many historical texts (and even many on the shelves today). Descriptions of devoted Jains performing ritual starvation to achieve a higher rebirth or men who willingly abandon their families for religious devotion may cause difficult reading for some, especially when many stories glorify such actions, though not all of them do. The stories depict the religious call of a medieval Jain as a difficult, though very rewarding, one as joining a monastery leads to renunciation of the world and rewards in rebirth. Often the abandoned families "see the light" and become devout themselves. Some seek revenge, as the bride Kanakasri does against her husband in the amusing story "Celana." Her husband becomes a Jain monk and leaves her only after seven days of marriage. After they both die she becomes "a troublesome demi-goddess." Upon recognizing her husband as a monk in another life, she decides to inflict an inconvenience on him and gives him an erection. Some may find themselves rooting for the woman, though the monk overcomes. Some stories have a naughty saucy edge to them, such as the erotic "Durgila." One day, a young man sees the apparently well-built Durgila ("like the fortress of the God of Love") swimming in scant clothing and explodes with desire. Little does he know that Durgila, though married, also sees him and feels similarly. The man finds a nun, of all people, to intercede on his behalf with the ravaging woman. Durgila violently tells her off numerous times, though the couple send "messages" to one another through the poor shamed and abused nun. They eventually meet, have a tryst, and her husband's father catches her in the act, but she outsmarts them all in front of the whole town by worshiping the yaksa. Though a great read, this tale does come off as somewhat misogynistic. One of the best tales, Sundari, tells of a princess who loses her husband and refuses to believe he's dead. She feeds and nurtures the corpse for what seems like too long. Her father in desperation seeks help. Another man has an idea and inexplicably finds the corpse of a woman. He sits next to the woman in denial and nurtures his corpse the same way she nurtures hers. Eventually he builds up enough trust, disposes both corpses and convinces the woman that the two corpses ran off with each other. "Your husband has clearly run off with my wife," he tells her. An ingenious, if not repugnant, solution. "Aramasoha" tells of a girl who helps a snake God outwit snake charmers and gets blessed with a luxurious garden that literally follows her everywhere. This story includes as many page turning twists as any thriller as does the longer "Devadinna," which defies summary. Throughout, people receive favors from the Gods through their loyalty to Jainism. Some receive riches, others obtain superpowers, others attain Jain salvation. The stories seem to argue that the right path will lead to beauty, wisdom, riches, just enough sensual pleasure and eventual rewards in subsequent lives. Some stories even challenge other religions. "Padmalata" directly excoriates Buddhism as a religion of "meat eaters" (which was once true) and as a "false belief." Jainism always triumphs in the end and the Jain Gods show their pleasure through miracles. Along the way some amazing and unforgettable tales get spun.As the introduction suggests, one should not take this book as a good introduction to Jainism in general. The religion itself does not get delineated in any systematic or consistent way, as the stories give multiple perspectives and represent different time periods. Not only that, the stories here represent only a small number of tales written by Jain monks over the centuries, so this collection is apparently in no way comprehensive. The introduction recommends finding other books on the religion itself and offers no summary of its beliefs. Given this, no one should embrace or dismiss Jainism based on this book alone. It's foremost a collection of stories. And as that the collection succeeds brilliantly. The stories stand on their own regardless of one's religious affiliation and represent yet another facet of human creativity, humor, reverence and, in many places, wisdom.

Each of these books in the Harry Potter series is a 'cover to cover read', as soon as I can buy them. Each is a gift to world literature.

SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). So far, I have noticed the following: (EU/US) dialling / dialing; Shan't! / Won't!; sherbet lemon / lemon drop; motorbike / motorcycle; and dustbin / trashcan. For many purists of the series who never liked the idea of modifying the original text for an American audience, this is a good thing. Good or bad is naturally for each reader to decide--just know, if you plan to read the books while listening to Jim Dale's audiobooks, you'll notice a few superficial differences.The quality of this new illustrated edition is phenomenal. I've been excited about the release of this book since it was announced, but I never expected the book as a whole to be so well crafted.A couple of things to note:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy red hardback with gold lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains".I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. If this book is a demonstration of what is to come with the illustrated editions for the rest of the series, we're all in for six more impeccable treats.

I LOVE THE STORY. Illustrations are great. PROBLEM is that the book came missing pages 153-168 because 137-152 were printed twice. It took me a week to realize this. You will want to check your books. I'm sure Amazon will take care of me but thank goodness I wasn't gifting this.

These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

I think this is my third reading of the Harry Potter series. The first time is a precious memory to me. Our four children would all climb into our king size bed before bedtime and we would read one or two chapters each evening. We homeschooled so, as each child's reading progressed, they read a part too. Their mom died. They're in late 20s now. Five grandkids. Those will be ready to read to before we know it. But life is not always neatly packaged. I married a widow and moved us all. Today they are off to their own lives. My four and I are scattered across four states and even overseas. So, I'm reading to myself now. I can't make a stronger recommendation than to say that I immediately purchased "The Order Of The Phoenix" after finishing this one. I also have the set in hardbound on the bookshelf beside me. But Kindle is just too convenient. *smile*

My husband tried to surprise me with this order, but we share the amazon account ;)I WAS surprised though, because I didn’t realize it would be textbook size with all these amazing scenes drawn out. They’re AH-MAY-ZING drawings!! If you love Harry Potter, you will love these books. For some reason, hubs couldn’t find the first and second of the series (I did ;p) so he bought the third first, but we know the stories by heart so it doesn’t matter to me. I hope they put out all of them! It almost feels like how I felt waiting for the actual series to come out.

A little academic in spots but a fascinating history of how gay men and women did their part during WWII. The official discrimination they faced was inconsistent certainly, with many officers looking the other way if they were pulling their weight and others going out of their way to "bust the queers". Regardless of your personal attitudes towards the gay community, the part they played in helping to win the war cannot be discounted.

I'm an author and read this while doing research for a novel. My eyes were opened. While gay, lesbian and bisexual Americans volunteered, and died in the service to our country during WWII, they were, for the most part, systematically discriminated against and treated with dishonesty, humiliation and psychological abuse.Sometimes mere accusations with no proof were enough to drum a member out of our armed forces depriving them of rights and the GI Bill benefits. To make it worse, their draft boards were told and work got around in civilian life that they were unfit. In that era, after the war, the lack of an honorable discharge often cast such a dark shadow that many couldn't find work.For those who believe being gay is a choice and a sin I disagree with you. I ask if you truly believe that or if you are doing a knee-jerk reaction to poison ideas implanted in you.This story is history, and you won't read of it in standard history books. Discrimination is discrimination is wrong. The pledge of allegiance ends: "with liberty and justice for all."

I had no idea so many gay folks served and found ways to have their own subculture right under the noses of a government that would blue-slip them out of the Army if they were caught. Such an important book in this current administration.

this is an excellent book, revealing a bit of history that I am sure very few are aware. I thought is was well written and factual; the characters in this book are what they are and it was interesting to hear their point of view of a situation they bascily had no control over, being drafted into military service. If anything this helps give a presepctive as to why the military has acted the way they have when it comes to gay and lesbian service members. These individuals showed great courage and charater as their stories unfold. Well worth the read.

I really wanted to love this book, but I just didn't. I was so looking forward to it based on the reviews and the subject matter. I am an avid WWII history buff, and couldn't wait to read about what it was like to be gay not only in the service at that time, but just during that era. The book was very good. Very interesting and enlightening. But I found it extremely repetitive. Each chapter could have been half the length and still effectively told the story. He also repeatedly used the same phrases to describe various situations. I often found myself losing interest as chapters went on, though I enjoyed what I read up to that point. Overall though, well worth the purchase and the read. It could have just been half the length.

I wish it had more individual stories

Used for UC Berkeley History class. Definitely would recommend, every eye opening!

I bought this book as part of a college history course and thought it was both well written and informative.
