I recently graduated from a point and shoot camera to my first DSLR, the Nikon D3200. I was trying to decided between this book and a few others, and ended up choosing this one because it has a chapter completely dedicated to Landscape Photography, my main use for the camera.This is a great book for both getting yourself familiar with the D3200, as well as learning to get good photos with a DSLR. I particularly like how each photo in the book lists the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed on it. I found this incredibly useful for gaining a better understanding of how those interact. I spent a few hours one evening reading through a lot of the book, and then went for a 10 mile hike in the CO mountains the next day and took photos that I was very happy with.My only gripe, and it's minor, is that there were a few times when a feature was discussed in the book, and it took me several minutes of messing around with the camera to figure it out. In both cases I found the explanation much further into the book in later chapters. Two examples:1. One of the first things the author encourages is to take the camera off of ISO Automatic mode. This being my first DSLR I had turned it on into the Auto mode I was used to, and could not figure out why the camera would not let me change the ISO. After much trial and error I figured out you have to be in one of the manual modes to change the ISO. This is mentioned in the chapters that deal with manual modes, but not when he first instructs you to make the change.2. The author explains all of the different viewing modes to review photos on the camera, and instructs how to enable them, but not how to actually access them with your pictures until later chapters. After hitting just about every button on the camera, I finally figured out that hitting up/down while viewing a picture does this. Again, this gets explained eventually, but not when you first learn about it.Outside of those minor frustrations, I found the book extremely informative and useful. I definitely recommend, especially for a new DSLR user looking to learn about taking better photos in addition to just using the D3200.

When I first purchased my Nikon D3200, I purchased two books - this one and David Busch's Nikon D3200 Guide.The Busch book is a fine book to have in your arsenal as it explains in minute detail how to operate every feature of your new camera. However, while it's a great operating manual, it doesn't teach you how to use those features to take great photographs.Nikon D3200: From Snapshots to Great Shots is more of a photography how-to book than an operating manual. You'll find plenty of tips here on how to operate your camera, but they're covered in the context of how to apply those features in order to take satisfying photographs. Some of the features that I particularly like in this book are the large color photographs at the beginning of each chapter which have call outs explaining how the camera was used to take the shot. I also found the step-by-step instructions for various tasks involved in different techniques extremely helpful. The assignments at the end of each chapter can be somewhat simplistic if you're already an experienced photographer, but even the simplistic assignments can help refresh your memory. The writing style throughout the book is conversational in tone and the language is approachable and easy to unerstand. I almost felt like a friend was explaining things to me.Overall, this is an excellent book that helped me to begin taking better photgraphs with my new camera right away. I know I will return to it again and again as I try new types of photography. I do think that Busch's book is worth purchasing as a companion as it provides a much more detailed technical look at the D3200, but this book is really a great starting point for anyone getting started with the Nikon D3200.

This is a great book. Simple written, straight to the point and with easy assignments to make you get more confortable with your new gear. The Nikon D3200 is an amazing piece of equipment, but you will be missing a lot using it as a point and shoot camera.This book will not teach you all about photography, but will teach you how to take amazing pictures with your new camera, and you point you to the right direction to became a proficiente amateur.I found it more way more useful than the "For Dummies" series, for half the price. Read it, practice with your camera, then came back here and search for books like "Understanding Exposure" or "BetterPhoto Basics: The Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Taking Photos Like a Pro" and take the next step.And if your are looking for tips about making movies, this is the wrong book. There's another one from the same series about it.

This text is truly horrible. Errors abound so if you are looking for a rigorous exercise in proofreading and editing a book this is a great project for you; however, if you are looking for a book that you can actually use please select another text.The writers of this book clearly did not have the text proofread by a professional editor or even a high school English student. Not only is the text full of incorrect spelling but they frequently use homonyms and other incorrect terms. As for the SOP section they are useless because instead of actually giving instructions they simply say to do things properly.As a free download this book is not worth the time to read it much less the cost of purchasing a printed copy. It would be faster to write this information from scratch that it would be to correct the constant errors in this text.

Wasn't exactly what I was expecting but ok....

repeated information throughout, grammar and spelling is awful--like they didn't even bother to use a spell check. many of the SOPs are mis-named and repeated.some useful information but not worth the time to find it hidden amongst so much useless other stuff.

It is very basic, and very repetitive, just a bunch of lists from tasks that hotels don't do anymore, it is simply not worth the money.

A classic. Lost my book copy. The revised ebook edition is excellent.

I first read this book 50 years ago and then took from it one basic idea that has guided my reading ever since...That one idea was that every good non-fiction book deserves 3 readings. The purpose of the first rapid read is to get an overview of the general thrust or central thesis of the book. The second reading involves digging in, an attempt to understand and analyze the author's central argument or thesis, and the third reading is for the purpose of argument, i.e., of reflecting on where we agree with the book and where we disagree, and why...50 years after that first reading, i still try to follow the advice (above), and find it as helpful and true today as it was back then.So, what in particular did I gain in from my current reading of this fine book, this gem? Three or four things, all of which are, at least to me, important.First, re the value of reading the intro or the preface in which the author often says specifically and explicitly what his central thesis is.Second, re the value of reading the last chapter or even the very last 8 to 10 paragraphs in which the author may, once again, summarize the whole central purpose and argument of the book, which gives you a key to understanding the work in its entirety.And, third, don't begin arguing with a book until you are certain that you have understood it as well as you possibly can.Bottom-line, I'm happy that I went back to reread this fine book.

I have always had a nagging feeling that I didn’t know how to read well. This book showed me that I was right. But it also showed me that I wasn’t expected to know how to read well (not with the kind of education most of us receive) and that I wasn’t alone in my ignorance. Reading well involves hard work and precise skills. This book provides the latter — the former is up to us.We take reading for granted because we are supposed to be fully alphabetised at around tenth grade. We are not told that this is just the first level of reading — Elementary Reading (Part 1, Ch. 3) — when you learn to recognise the written symbols and to convey meaning from them. You learn how to grow your vocabulary on your own and to transfer and compare concepts from different reading materials. But most of us stop there. And from there we live the rest of our lives treating books in undeserving ways, wasting too much time on the bad ones and granting so little time to the good ones. The great ones, we hardly read, because they scare us.The problem of wasting time can be drastically diminished by applying the second level of reading — Inspectional Reading (Part 1, Ch. 4). This level means “skimming systematically” to grasp as much as you can from a book in a limited time-frame (possibly just a few minutes). That was an important skill on Adler and Doren’s time when libraries were the norm, but it is even more important now when you have digital previews of a plethora of books in services such as Amazon. If “Customer’s Review” sections existed during their time, I am sure they would also have devoted a portion of Chapter 4 to provide insights on how to better profit from them.The problem of spending little time on the good (or great) books can only be solved by the third level of reading — Analytical reading (Part 2). Without it, you either refrain from reading a good book altogether (specially a great one) or you read it badly. “Reading badly”, the book explains, is to read passively. Reading analytically is very active and it is hard work. To help us in this endeavour, the book provides extensive advice on how to physically mark the books we read (Part 1, Ch. 5). These note-taking techniques are indispensable to read well and the reader is advised to experiment with them and adapt them to his own style of understanding and to the new types of media now available.To read analytically you have to ask yourself a number of questions while reading and you must make your best to answer them yourself. The authors present these questions in sequence, but they are quick to explain that in practice (and with experience) we should try to answer them mostly simultaneously.First, you need to know what the book is about as a whole (Ch. 6 and Ch. 7). This means first categorising the book, then expressing its unity in as few words as possible. You should then proceed to outline its main parts, each of which should be treated as a subordinate whole and have its unity also expressed. This process could continue ad aeternum, but “the degree of approximation varies with the character of the book and your purpose in reading it”. At the end, you should have identified what questions the author wants to answer himself.After this more “descriptive” stage, you should now try to grasp the author’s message (Ch. 8 and Ch. 9). This means first reconciling the grammatical and the logical aspects of what he writes by matching his chosen words with the terms they express. In the same way, whatever the kind of enlightenment you had by reading the book, you have had a glimpse of truth — you can’t ignore it now that you know it.Part 3 is useful in that it provides some interesting aspects of specific types of reading material, namely practical books, history (including biographies and current events), imaginative literature (including plays and poems), science and mathematics, philosophy and the social sciences. While a pleasure to read, it is not imperative that you do so if you have fully grasped the analytical reading process. There is, however, a lot of value in this part of the book, specially in the later chapters, and the reader is strongly advised to read it. One thing I should say is that, while they detail interesting aspects of reading imaginative literature, their techniques mostly apply to expository works. I think their best advice with respect to the former is “don’t try to resist the effect that a work of imaginative literature has on you”. This means allowing the work to show you “a deeper, or greater reality”. And this reality is “the reality of our inner life”. We don’t need any more rules than this one.The last part of the book presents the fourth (and highest) level of reading — Syntopical reading — or reading two or more books on the same subject. By reading syntopically you are not concerned with understanding each book in all its details — in fact, you won’t read any of the individual books analytically (not at the present syntopical reading effort, at least). Here you are reading each book for what it may contribute to your own problem, not for the book’s own sake. Furthermore, you are not reading to find the truth or to establish your own voice — you would be only one more voice in the conversation. You are simply trying to understand the controversy itself, to establish the many voices you hear in a pure exercise of dialectical objectivity. This is a fantastic topic, which the authors have materialised in their greatest contribution to mankind, in my opinion — the Syntopicon, volumes II and III of the Great Books of the Western World. The reader is very much advised to check it out.The book ends with two appendices. The first one provides a fascinating list of great books — the “endlessly readable” books. The list may seem overwhelming at first glance (and it is!), but the authors are prompt to address the reader and explain that the list does not have any time frame attached to it. I say it should just be begun — even an ignorant reader like me will be so flabbergasted by what he will learn that he will never stop reading it. This is a project for your life as a whole — to never stop reading these books. For a much more restrictive (but also magnificent) reading list, the reader is referred to the 10-year-reading plan provided in Adler’s Great Books.The second appendix provides exercises and tests on all four levels of reading. I must admit that I hadn’t read them until I got this far in my review. I then decided to do it and now I tell you this: just read it. If you have had literature classes as an undergraduate or graduate student, you might find it slightly commonplace. But if you haven’t, like me, you will be glad you read it. Like they state at the beginning of the appendix, the selected texts are "themselves worth reading", so you can’t lose much by doing so. It is a delightful taste of what awaits you in your future exploits of the Great Books — if you do well and accept the challenge, of course.On my part, simply put, this book has changed my life. It not only showed me "how" to read a book, but it also showed me "what" to read. I’ll be forever in debt with two of the greatest absent teachers I’ve had, Dr. Mortimer J. Adler and Dr. Charles Van Doren.

Reading at this level is simple and unsophisticated you just look at every word until you've seen them all.The second level of reading is inspectional where the reader skims, or pre reads the preface, table of contents, index, and a few chapters. You should read the entire book superficially without regard to whether the reader understands it or not, the author explains. The authors believe  that this kind of superficial reading can prepare a reader for enjoying of more substantial books. They also claim, and I found this to be true, that this method should be used for great works first, then go back later for in depth reading for better understanding and enjoyment. I remember reading classics in school slowly and in depth, and like the authors say, you forget the beginning and meaning of the book before you even finish with these great classics. What's worse is you don't enjoy reading them at that point, and it's more drudgery.Adler and Van Doren then present how to classify books, and the approaches to take for each kind. This is a very in depth and thoughtful process that will greatly benefit real readers in multiple capacities.Â

He was raised in it, worked in it professionally spreading its message across the airwaves, and finally reached a crossroads where his faith could not stand against the occurrences of this world. So many of us who have been on similar journeys can identify with what Seth has to say, and yet learn some insights that we may have not considered. His story is heart breaking. This is not the story of someone who faced one tragedy and threw it all away; most walking away from faith stories aren't. Not only does he share his story, but he also addresses common questions from Christians and answers them; what else from "The Thinking Atheist"? To those unfamiliar with Seth Andrews and his website/podcast/youtube page The Thinking Atheist, it may sound as if he is being condescending or arrogant. Nothing of the sort. Seth's own story is no less compelling reading and just as emotional and moving."Deconverted: A Journey from Religion to Reason" is a well written autobiography told with humour and heart by an "average" person. It is the story lived by many thousands of people in America and around the World, every day. This story could very well be your story of doubt and loss of religious faith.I think this book will be an insightful read for both the non-believer and the faithful. Those doubting their religious faith and the irrational religious dogma, will find solace in knowing that it is indeed ok to question one's religious faith and what you have been instructed to think by your Parents, Pastors and Priests.The Faithful will gain an understanding in simple terms, as to why their loved ones and friends can and do quit their faith and turn away from religious dogma.The reader will receive a first hand account of the experience of someone, who was raised in a very Christian home by loving, devout Christian parents in a majority Christian community, in the belt buckle of the Bible belt of Mid Western America and who, as an adult began to question his religious faith.The Believer who has doubts, will be able to relate to Seth and his story on a personal level. Seth had those same doubts about his faith, as you do and began to ask the difficult questions, started thinking for himself and finally followed where logic, common sense and reality, not faith, indoctrination and traditional ancient dogma, lead him.. I felt very alone during my 2007 middle-aged deconversion, despite living in the most unchurched part of the country (Pacific Northwest). However, as time passed fellow faith-expats like Seth Andrews published their exodus stories and I began to feel like I was part of a burgeoning movement. Reading "Deconverted" was like a trip through memory lane, and I easily identified with the story of a man who, after decades in the Church, finally figured out it was a house of cards and abandoned a comfortably numb religious fantasy for the soothing balm of atheist rationality.Mr. Andrews and I are both Generation X and therefore experienced many of the same Christian rites of passage, such as being scared towards God by the apocalyptic "Thief in the Night" cheese-fest series of movies and rocking out in a holy way to righteous acts like Petra and the Imperials. He got saved at a much earlier age than I did due in no small part to the influence of his Christian parents, but our post-conversion result was the same: a passion for all things Jesus and a quest to become a "man of God" via the Scriptural use of spiritual gifts and natural talents.In the author's case, coming of age during the big boom of contemporary Christian music in the 80s and 90s led Mr. Andrews to his calling as a Christian radio deejay. At first life seemed divinely ordered, but as time went on he began to question his beliefs as he grieved over the senseless deaths of devout Christian musicians Keith Green and Rich Mullins, cringed at the excesses of evangelical luminaries such as Oral Roberts, and recoiled from the horrifying actions of religious fanatics during 9/11. Mr. Andrews' once fiery faith began to sputter and he settled into what a more zealous believer would call a "lukewarm" mindset.But as the saying goes: "when the student is ready, the master will appear." This fateful event happened for Mr. Andrews (and me as well) when the New Atheists began releasing their controversial and hard-hitting tomes. In particular, raconteur Christopher Hitchens made a strong impression on the author with his witty and articulate demolition of all things religious. The last of Mr. Andrews' Christianity fell before the onslaught of Mr. Hitchens and his rational comrades, and he was reborn with a new mission as founder of The Thinking Atheist and producer of podcasts and video resources for non-believers.Each chapter of "Deconverted" begins with an encouraging quote from a member of The Thinking Atheist Internet community. In addition to his personal tale, Mr. Andrews has gathered some of the gorier and more contradictory aspects of the Bible that are usually ignored or rationalized by believers (provided they actually read their holy book, which is less common than you might expect). His categorization of Christian apologetic archetypes was familiar and insightful as well (check out Bill Maher's fine documentary "Religulous" for real-life examples in the wild).After finishing the book I was inspired to hit the Web and investigate Mr. Andrews' organization and other atheist-related websites and Facebook groups. Turns out I'm not so alone - "Deconverted" is now one of many ex-Christian memoirs, blogs, and groups where the newly rational can find fellowship and encouragement. Although lifelong unbelievers will enjoy "Deconverted", those of us who did time in Christianity will deeply appreciate and relate to Mr. Andrews' pilgrimage to atheism.

About the Author

Chip Cheek’s stories have appeared in The Southern Review, Harvard Review, Washington Square, and other journals and anthologies. He has been awarded scholarships to the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, the Tin House Summer Writers’ Workshop, and the Vermont Studio Center, as well as an Emerging Artist Award from the St. Botolph Club Foundation. Cape May is his debut novel. He lives in El Segundo, California, with his wife and baby daughter.
