Ok I am beginning to not trust Amazon reviews... How do 74% of people rate this 5 stars?!?! This book is beyond boring and basically repeats the pareto principle over and over and over again.... How many different ways can you say it? Well that's what this book does.Seriously, this could have been a short magazine article. The author provides very few examples outside of the obvious ones as to how to he applied this principle in his own life. Not to mention, some of his examples are extreme suggesting that you can ignore 100% of your emails and inferring they are a complete waste of time. How useful and realistic is that?Very disappointing and I feel mislead by these past reviews.

This is a great book! It explains how typically we put 80% of our time, energy, effort in a way that only gives a 20% return. Doesn't make sense whichever way you look at it. Damon explains the principle of the 80/20 rule and how it can literally change your life. Imagine putting in a 20% effort and getting an 80% result! Sounds too good to be true - but it's not. This book shows how to apply this simple principle in all areas of life - it's not just about being more productive, or running your business better; it is about getting the most out of life: at home, in relationships, in leisure pursuits. The book is straight forward and easy to read. Damon writes in a down to earth, friendly style. He is not lecturing. He is not talking down. He does not use complicated ideas. He is like a friend telling another friend where to find the treasure he has discovered. I really appreciated the practical suggestions and the open invitation to try things out. Sure this is a kind of "self-improvement" book, something that you read for information (i.e. it is "work") but I actually enjoyed reading it. Practical, down to earth and, dare I say it "fun"! Although the title is not catchy, it truly represents the content presented. How do I regularly find myself in the weeds of details and never achieve anything or feeling satisfied? I have yet to live the 80/20 way. I have been following the 80/20 way for over a month now and I can honestly say that it has simplified my life and I actually get more done! The book is a very quick read, like most text from this author. Give it a try!

This book shows us that Richard McKinley is a wonderful Pastel painter. But that was about all it does. "Top 100 Secrets" are still secret. It is just a come on to sign you up for their are course. Save your Yankee Dollars for something a little more informative.

I just got into pastel, had pastel pencils and mainly draw with all mediums. Into graphite, carbon, colour pencils mainly trying to do realism, but once I picked up a pastel pencils really loved the ability to create unusual drawings. Then got a cheap sample box of pastel blocks and wanted to learn how to use them.The pastel art that I do is more of a mixed media or I really like to do semi abstract work. This book was perfect for the style I want to learn for mixed media works and only pastel works. Just bought a set of Derwent pastel stick and waiting to get them, said they were harder than the usual soft pastels which are very powdery and messy, and the Derwents can also be used for fine detail work. I love this book and the style and would recommend it to anyone looking to learn about pastel drawing.

This is another "how to" book on pastel painting organized into chapters with a few additions and variations that make it a worthwhile purchase. For example, most technique books have an obligatory chapter on materials where the author discusses his preferences on pastels and supports. McKinley doesn't go there, but does include a nice piece on making your own supports rather than buying any number of pre made papers or boards. It should be noted this author has a signature selection of landscape pastels available from Great American Pastels but, to his credit, doesn't tout that particular brand. Instead he speaks briefly on the qualities he's looking for in developing his palette and encourages the reader/student to try many different brands to develop preferences. Also included is a rudimentary DVD (27+ min.) showing some basic steps in developing an under painting which will undoubtedly be useful to many who purchase the book. It should be noted that while this is a plus it's also a bit of advertising for other North Light/McKinley products as this author and his publisher have a couple DVD titles that I'm sure they'd be pleased for you to purchase.The bulk of the book covers basic drafting issues (focal point, rule of thirds, value, aerial perspective, etc.) and specific techniques involved with the pastel medium (under painting, strokes, surface texture). Filling the balance are sections on plein air painting, sketching, framing, air travel, and shipping of completed paintings. It should be noted the book covers a lot of ground not mentioned in other pastel guides and is well illustrated with the author's work as well as relevant photos of products or processes discussed in each section. As I understand it all of this material comes from the author's blog/web site and makes the book more a hodgepodge of topics rather than a progressive art instructional. While this allows a lot of random information to be included it doesn't allow for much basic pastel instruction (no step by step demos) which is why, I suppose, it's called "Pastel Pointers" rather than something more specific to pastel painting. I'll leave it for someone else to determine if there's "100 secrets" in the book as I don't know where amazon came up with that title; my copy is just labeled "Pastel Pointers: Top Secrets for Beautiful Pastel Paintings". Regardless, from a purely informational standpoint it's recommended and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is discussed in the following paragraph.While his paintings have an attractive atmospheric quality to them I feel they also have a generic sameness that becomes a bit predictable page after page. He seems to paint the same light conditions in every scene and has a signature palette incorporating violet highlights in his panels. If you've ever seen a gallery full of Thomas Kinkade prints you'll know what I mean. This is not a comment on artistic merit, rather just my preference in art. If you admire his style and technique which relies upon a significant under painting, then he would be a fine painter to emulate, though I personally prefer the work of Richard McDaniel. McDaniel has several books out, also has a signature selection of Great American Pastels and, like McKinley, comes from a drawing/oil painting background. I might suggest that you get a copy of "Landscape" (first choice) or "On Location" by Richard McDaniel and compare it with McKinley's work to gauge which artist you feel more comfortable with.

A large fraction of this book has almost nothing to say about pastel painting technqiues, being instead about the art business. There's even a section on listening to music while you work, and a section on doing your income taxes.On pastel painting itself, there is a lot about materials and staying organized, perhaps less about the painting process. I found the information about preparing surfaces, thumbnails, underpainting, value, color, and atmospheric perspective, to be interesting, as well as some information about how to deal with common problems.What frustrated me about this book was that I found it to be overly specific about some things and overly general about others, with relatively little real useful information, which had to be searched for by reading the rest. For example, the author tells you what size he breaks his pastel sticks into and how he grips a piece of pastel in his fingers--something which is quite personal and not likely to be of use to anybody who is not a total beginner. But about actual pastel strokes he is very general, showing you only that you can swipe, hatch, or crosshatch. These strokes are not demonstrated in any kind of painting--not even a simple one. They are simply shown in blocks of color out of any context. He speaks of the overall importance of edges to giving your work a natural, three-dimensional quality, but he doesn't really talk about when, why, or how to blend edges. He goes into significant detail on how to make greens look natural in a landscape painting--something quite specific and relatively advanced. Then he talks about value and color harmony in general terms (which is nonetheless interesting and I found useful). But he never quite seems to find that sweet spot of actual techniques and approaches. It's not a book for beginners, though there are parts of it that seems aimed at the total neophyte (how to hold your pastel). For an intermediate level pastel enthusiast there is some interesting information, but sections that deal with things like your first gallery show aren't helpful. But for an artist who is ready to think about art shows, most of the material in here is probably hopelessly basic and general.As to the writing style, I found it a bit wordy in most places, which is all the more frustrating when you find yourself searching for the next bit of useful information.For me the DVD wouldn't play--at least not in my PC.Overall, there was enough of value in this book to make it worth reading, but the experience of reading it was frustrating.

This is an excellent book for artists who have worked with pastels.It covers a wide range of topics, from basic techniques, to framing for galleries. It is a book to dip into when you need to try something new, need inspiration, or just wonder how to achieve a goal. Richard is a great educator and he does a great job of sharing his wealth of knowledge in a readable way.I've loved reading the book and expect to be dipping back into it on a regular basis.

If you want to really learn about pastel this book is a must !!! Not only for beginners but for everyone who wants to go to another level with their paintings! It is well thought out and written ! Richard McKinley is amazing.

What an interesting, but depressing book. It accentuates how little human beings have evolved to this day. If not for the exception of a few good people, those less fortunate would be left to die. I’m not a big history buff, but this book took me to the panhandle. I suffered along with the people presented in this tale and journeyed with them to what they thought would be salvation. I suffered their angst when they realized life was no better here for them and rejoiced when the superintendent took an interest in one group of migrants and helped them learn to better themselves and life around them. An amazing gentleman and amazing, hard-working, earnest migrants. Their unfailing determination in the face of poverty, illness, and bigotry is a lesson to us all to this day. Tons of photographs bring the story to life and help break up big chunks of text. Older children will find this book fascinating!

Overwhelming! So many things about this book stirred deep emotion in me. This story related to the people who left the Dust Bowl in search of a better life during the Depression and traveled Route 66 to Southern California. The deprivations and discrimination they suffered touched me deeply. I was shocked to read of the hard-heartedness of many Californians; I didn't want to believe it.One of the wonderful things about this book is the story of one man who made up his mind to make a difference for the "Okies." Using the attitudes of the majority he found a way to acceptance and inclusion for those who had been rejected and shunned.My parents were young adults during the "dirty thirties" and lived in the Dust Bowl. Since their destination was not California, but Oregon, this is a part of the story I had never heard. The writing in this book is excellent, flowing evenly from page to page. Many of the photographs within are pure art, having been taken by Russell Lee, Dorothea Lange, and others. These two people are the Pieter Bruegel and Thomas Hart Benton (depicting plain, everyday folk) of American photography. This book relates a small chunk of American history, to be sure, but more than that, it relates universal themes of the human condition. Overall, the book relates the brutal conditions of the dust bowl, the migration over the mountains and desert, taunting and prejudice from settled Californians, and eventual attainment of excellence, as revealed by the construction and maintenance of the Weedpatch School, which eventually became a model school in the community. My 5 1/2 year old enjoyed reading every page, and found particular mirth in the unusual daily chore that the dust bowl children did with their cows. The description of this unusual chore is worth the price of the book. What was this daily chore? One way to find out is to borrow or purchase this book.

Much has been said about this book. All I can say is, "wow" what a book. I shed bittersweet tears as I read this wonderful book. Although I never lived in Weedpatch, I was born in 1935 to migrant Arkies. We lived in the Linnell Camp near Visalia. This story is my life. Oh how I could relate. This book was like a motion picture, that I was in, and I traveled right down the road with it. I don't know if a person could relate if they haven't lived this life, but, I know that this book is so well written and illustrated that surely a person with a heart and caring spirit should be able to follow this book even if they could never imagine the deep down hardships, how the kids and families stuck together, bonded and had a good time. A lot of us could add our names to the long list of Weedpatch kids that became a success; it only takes hope, dreams, a longing for a better tomorrow, and a can do spirit. It is always an added benefit to have a man like Mr. Hart to believe in you. I loved this man and only wish he were still alive so that I could thank him for caring and acting on those cares.

For those of us interested in the Dust Bowl's history and legacy, this book details and examines the children of this well-known migration from the Plains to the West in search of food, work, and shelter.Ironically, if you watched the Grapes of Wrath where you would see for yourself how they portrayed the children in the camps as forgotten, ignored, discrminated against for being Okies. They were all called that while their parents searched for jobs in the daytime.The Weedpatch Camp in Bakersfield, California is an example of how a government run camp was different where it allowed all the migrants to live more like human beings. The book builds up to the school where it was in existence for five years. It was so impressive to the community that non-residents wanted their children to attend too.This book is a great read for children and adults about the Dust Bowl, the migration, and California living in the 1930s. You would be very impressed to get it.

Greg Lehey is an independent computer consultant specializing in UNIX. Born in Australia, he was educated in Malaysia and England before studying chemistry in Germany and chemical engineering in England. This is a great book for installing and maintaining FreeBSD. It explains why you may want to install certain commands or OS features and how to set them up. This book explains each aspect of the FreeBSD OS. This book is a great addition to the novice or experienced Unix user wanting to use FreeBSD.

As far as I know it's the only FreeBSD book but it would deserve 4 stars even in a tough competition. It covers installation, networking and administration in all details. I also enjoy FreeBSD 3.3 on 4 CDs enclosed in the book.I think the book lacks the description of coexistense with other operating systems (Samba coverage is shallow) and modern GUI desktop like KDE (I found it different in some details from Linux). It should also be more up-to-date.

This is the perfect computer book. It covers both beginner and intermediate topics with enough detail to really teach you what's going on, but not so much you get lost in theory. It is a easy book to read from beginning to end, or use as a reference and get just the info you need. If you are going to be using FreeBSD this is the book to have handy.Thank you Mr Lehey!

Before reading Greg Lehey's "The Complete FreeBSD, 4th Ed" (TCF:4E), I reviewed Michael Lucas' excellent "Absolute BSD" (a FreeBSD book) in Feb 03. I can't say which book is better, and I recommend you buy Lucas' book as well as this one. TCF:4E remains for me the FreeBSD user's manual; any serious FreeBSD user will have it on his or her shelf. The two books complement each other, as Lucas is often more direct in his explanations.While in some places I find Lucas' material easier to follow, Lehey offers depth of coverage not found elsewhere. For example, Lehey devotes the entirety of ch. 28 to low-level discussions of configuring and troubleshooting XFree86, whereas Lucas offers a few pages. (Urban and Tiemann's "FreeBSD Unleashed" talks about configuring X too.)Lucas' "Absolute BSD" focuses solely on FreeBSD. The only "straying" involves mentioning applications which run on FreeBSD. As apps like Apache and Postfix make systems useful, this makes sense. Lehey's TCF:4E is less concentrated, as it discusses intricacies of hardware, questions to ask ISPs before signing contracts, and principles of network troubleshooting. While I probably don't need to read such topics in a book I bought (yes, bought) for FreeBSD coverage, I didn't mind these "diversions." "Grog" Lehey has been around so long his insights are truly valuable. Lehey also presents a very traditional BSD usage model, where admins check their email using "mutt" (ch. 26) and avoid "Standard" installations in favor of "Custom" installations. I found this approach useful.Since TCF:4E is advertised as covering version 5.0, I hoped to see some introductory material on items brought from Robert Watson's "TrustedBSD" project. These were "experimental" in FreeBSD 5.0, but could change the way FreeBSD systems are administered. Overall, security didn't get as much attention in Lehey's book compared to Lucas'. For example, Lucas walked readers through deploying a jail, while Lehey doesn't mention the subject. I also found the chapter on Vinum confusing. Since Lehey created Vinum, he may need someone to step back and describe the system in layman's terms.Overall, TCF:4E is a must-buy. I already referred to it over the weekend when installing a new FreeBSD gateway, and I expect to consult it repeatedly in the future.

The two books that I use most frequently when administering my FreeBSD server, are this one by Lehey and UNIX System Administration Handbook by Nemeth et al. Lehey's book is easy to understand, and covers most instances where FreeBSD varies from other Unix varieties.My chief complaint with the book (and hence only 4 stars), is that Lehey seems to be a bit conflicted as to whether he wants his book to be a tutorial or a reference book. I have only read the 4th edition, and I suspect some of this problem is due to hauling along portions of the book that used to be necessary which really are not anymore. For example, when it comes to explaining the installation process, the book does not add much value to the free online guide, "FreeBSD Handbook" available on the FreeBSD website. In fact, due to the ever evolving nature of software, the "FreeBSD Handbook" is often more up to date than Lehey's book. In particular, Lehey's book still explains how to install XFree86, while the current version of the OS used XOrg.Lehey does excel in giving a more thorough overview of most other aspects of FreeBSD that do not change quite as quickly. He also does a decent job of pointing the reader to other resources for further information.Lehey created the Vinum Volume Manager (which I admittedly know nothing about, and I skipped his chapter on it), so it is no surprise that the chapter on it is in the top third largest chapters in his book.My advice, if you are just trying out FreeBSD, you can probably get by with the free "FreeBSD Handbook" online. If you plan on maintaining a FreeBSD machine, this book is definitely handy to have on the bookshelf.

Insofar as writing skill, though, “Rampage” has a much smoother flow to it.Compared to present-day mass murderers, Howard Unruh would almost be skipped over. He killed much fewer people than our recent killers. Yet, his story is every bit as perplexing as even the most vile.Without giving any spoilers, please contemplate this: prior to his military service, Unruh probably was as fine a young man as the most polite, mild-mannered member of your own church.Then, the young man went to war, learning how to kill…BLUSH FACTOR: With the exception of a quote of General Patton using the f-word in Chapter 3, there is nothing here that will cause undue embarrassment when reading aloud with your church prayer group. Mind you, it is a true story about a mass murderer, so you may want to read it alone before taking it to read it aloud to your church friends.ADVENTURE: The travel back in time to the mid-20th century can be seen as an adventure.SOUL: In the sense that you get to see how a young person, a seemingly devoted church goer, gets twisted into a bloodthirsty, desperate murderer with little sense of remorse does tend to make one wonder about the soul and the teachings of Jesus. At least, it did get me contemplating such while in church listening to my priest. Without a full devotion to God, just following the rules and attending church does not equip you with a soul. “Rampage” is evidence of that.Since the work is very short, I’m posting only the briefest excerpt I can, but long enough for readers to get a feel for the quality and flow of the writing.EXCERPT‘…Seven years after his graduation, after Howard Unruh had achieved international notoriety, a fellow ex-GI named Chall Allred composed a letter attesting to his sterling qualities. “I served with Howard,” Allred wrote.There was no time when [he] did not conduct himself in an intelligent, quiet, courteous, obedient manner. His character was above reproach. His rating as a soldier was excellent. This book investigates the crimes of Howard Unruh, a mass killer who murdered thirteen people in some ten minutes in 1949. Unruh catalogued complaints against his neighbors for two years before he acted upon them. In reality his anger towards these people was usually undeserved and petty, but he allowed his rage to burgeon until it exploded in a morning of violence against men, women and children, one even as young as a toddler. Rather than facing a death penalty, Unruh was sent to a hospital for the criminally insane; a judgment that scandalized the populace. There he remained for sixty years until his death. Schechter has written a thorough analysis of the gunman and the events of that bitter morning. This is a very involving story and written without fluff or personal opinion.

This book deserves a five-star rating because of the wealth of knowledge followed by a excellent display of literary establishment!!!! I would recommend this book to anyone!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Very well written and it just draw you in. So descriptive but not overwhelming, this was a quick read that was very informative.

interesting tale. never heard of the killer before. easy to read except for the script inserts amongst the type which was a bit distracting.

Make more of this series I love it. This is reading and writing. I’m glad I made this purchase. Buy it!

I didn’t mean to buy this. I clicked on a link that said it was free for Amazon Prime members. When I saw the charge come through my account I tried to return it and couldn’t.

... But very satisfying. I was unfamiliar with this case as I suspect are most of you. It's still shocking today. Sad and compelling like all of Schecter's work.

This University text introduces system programming via Unix/Linux in a way that stimulates students to ask "How is that done?" and then make it happen. The unique approach is good. Far too many would-be programmers are handed a recipe and expect the same on the job. Those who ask "How is that done?" will later ask "How can this be done?" without the example program to inspire them. It's a good way to approach teaching students system programming at the novice level.

Honestly I was annoyed that the professor made us buy his book; however, there is a ton of good info in here. Professor Molay is an expert, no doubt. Unfortunately, the examples are in desperate need of adherence to best practices. If you turned in something resembling the example code into your professor he would fail you.

Only needed it for school. The content is outdated and only good to learn the basics. Many examples no longer compile or work. For this price the book should be updated to at least work on the modern Linux/unix distributions.

This book is very understandable and well written; and that's coming from someone who hates books

The beauty of this book is Prof. Molay's excellent and methodical explanations that elucidate what would otherwise (in other books) seem exceedingly complex and full of arcane details. The pedagogical style of this book is simply quite extraordinary --something that is not found in most programming books. This book, along with Stevens, provide a much deeper understanding of Unix/Linux than what can be acquired by learning by trial and error.This book is, of course, best understood in Prof. Molay's Harvard cscie-28 class --yet the stylistic differences between C in 2002 can be a bit disconcerting, till, of course, you learn more C thanks to this book.

It goes right to the point and it's easy too understand. One of the very few books out there that really shows what system programming is all about. Great samples too.

Awesome book for beginners to UNIX. You will learn a ton!

This book is beautifully written. I just got it today and read the first chapter. I bought it for a class I am taking in Unix Systems Programming. I was relieved when Molay's book arrived in the mail today. I was relieved that the book exceeded my expectations. If you can't afford Harvard, don't worry--the course is all here.
