OK, so I am a 'political nerd', having grown up in the Washington, D.C. area. I was introduced to several (three) of the Federalist Papers back in college (eons ago), but nothing Anti-Federalist. This being an election year there have been many different interpretations of the Constitution and other rights being bandied about, so I wanted to 'go to the source' to read what was actually put on paper by our forefathers and form my own opinions. WOW. This book absolutely fits what I was looking for -- the original Federal and Anti-Federal arguments. As you read this book you can hear the back-and-forth discussions and astute observations as our forefathers worked through many issues. If you're into political science, this is a must-have. Given the current political climate, it may also prove to be very grounding.

A nice compilation, though the table of contents is über weak. It could at least describe the content of a given paper, or list the author. Instead it looks like this:Federalist 1 ..... page 1Federalist 2 ..... page 2I mean, come on.

Anyone interested would do well to have a copy in their library, so I give it five stars because it is a useful one volume source for these important arguments wound around the ratification of our constitution. What I don't like is how the book is constructed. It is a print on demand which is bad enough, but the design is atrocious and hardly qualifies as a book, the type is sharper and cleared than other PODs I've come across, but the margins are sub par. While reading is easy enough, there is no room for running commentary, fore paper is entirely lacking, the back paper is ample enough for notes and jeeze an index. There is no running title at the head of the pages, only a constant reminder of the book's title and page numbers are awkwardly placed at the bottom of the page. The author attribution on the title page looks like a rubber stamp, the TOC and running header title are both sans serif type which make them look like stop signs, however, the text body is serif type which is more pleasing to the eye. The binding is more or less industry standard, but I'm not convinced it will stand up to much wear, nor rugged enough for travel. Wait an see what happens after the glue dries. Clearly since no thought went into the design and that this seems the only one volume edition available in print, it's moot to say one could do worse or for that matter better. Since it's a POD a better alternative might to find a second hand copy in decent condition. Will I return it, naaaa; since I bought it I retain privilege of critique. It's still useful enough.

I like it because it seems complete. But then that is what it is advertized to be. Meeting the minimum required gets it an average rating. Where it should pick up extra points is in presentation and indexing. It fails to earn additional points. The table of contents is minimal and does not even show who wrote a given paper. There is NO index or cross reference of any kind. There is a section called Popullar Highlights that appears to be some memorable qoutes, but it is so under done as to be useless. So this is a very basic listing of the papers with NO frills at all.

IF you want to know the process that the founding Fathers used to craft the DoIndependence and the US Constitution, and establish courts and divisions of labor or responsibility, REAL NEWS to make your OWN decisions, this is the one to read. EVERY student of LAW and Justice should HAVE to read and understand these concepts, opinions (which differed greatly) and then reason-out the concluded docs. Today, so many courts and/or law makers at every level, seem to over-look or disregard these fundamental rules and/or premises for WHY the constitution was drafted in this manner. As a CRJ professional for over thirty years, from steet cop to Judge, I strongly recommend a study of these docs, to understand (partially) why there is so much disparity in Law vs Outcomes. Some trials hinge on ONE word in the applicable doctrine or Constitutional designation. i.e. Thou shall (not) .....and Congress shall...or shall not...Careful study of these founding documents can help you see through the constuctionist judges and IGNORANT congressional BILLS, that clearly become over-turned or should be, at every level of the process. DO NOT be deceived. Every law is not on keeping with U S Constitution. You can know why if you study these documents.

I read both of these in the past but could not resist the digital version to review, highlight and categorize quotes etc. for my own writing. If you are a student of our system of government the Federalist and the Anti Federalist papers are essential reading. These were literate men and their use of language and sentence structure may seem daunting, but you will be challenged, informed, and enlightened. Worth the effort.

It is so lovely not to have to rely on someone else's interpretation of our founder's words. Here are both sides of the debate, unfiltered, original, priceless!

Ok, you have to be a history buff or poli-science wonk to be interested but it's hard to find anything else that presents arguments related to the adoption of the US Constitution in the words of the framers

It's been awhile since I read this, so unfortunately my thoughts aren't fresh and I can't remember specifics. Nevertheless, heregoes: as an academic economist, I liked the book, found it interesting, and liked being walked through lots of interesting facts and data, on stuff like convergence of prices after increases in shipping technology, and on immigration to the new world. Yet, I also felt that the book had no really coherent theme, as material for the book was seemingly chosen out of the authors' published academic papers. As such, it seems like they completely punted on all the important questions about trade, tariffs, and industrial policy. Hajoon Chang writes books with the provocative thesis that no country has ever gotten rich on free trade, and that the protectionism allows countries not at the technological frontier to get there quicker, and, he says, mainstream economists don't believe in this for purely ideological reasons. What are Williamson & O'Rourke's view? As mainstream economists, they almost certainly do not agree with Hajoon Chang. Yet, they give no intellectual counterweight. They say little to nothing about it in the book, which can only lead one to the conclusion that they had not thought seriously about the most important topic falling within the rubric of "Globalization and History". That's a damning critique. (Although, it should be mentioned that O'Rourke has a more recent paper which concludes that countries with industrial tariffs grew faster (from 1870-1913), which is actually supportive of the Chang view...)

I am an economist working on globalization issues, interested in history and economic history. I found this book an excellent study that puts globalization discussion in historical (19th century) context, a period of large international capital flows and even larger human capital flows. Th study uses data on these mass movements in production factors to empirically test/uses the standard international trade Heckscher Olin model on income and factor price distribution in trade. It shows that these mass movements had indeed measurable effects on income distribution following some of the model predictions. Problems of globalization in economic terms are indeed linked to the income effects of several groups in the economy following the opening up to increasing trade, investment and migration flows. All too often these discussions are marred by lack of data and lack of historical awareness, and i found this study filling a real gap. It surely will be contested but i found the analysis interesting and well-written. Recommended!

I would agree that this is a very good book in terms of presenting what happened in the 19th century Atlantic economy. I do have one critical observation. The authors blame the collapse of globalization on the lobbying of particular industries; thus setting up the argument that general gains from trade were lost to special interests. This is in accord with their belief that globalization is a good thing. As an economist working on these issues for many years, with experience in government as well as academics and the private sector, I have to disagree. Clearly, governments need to rally constituents to support policies. Yet, from our own Alexander Hamilton to Germany's Otto von Bismarck, and a host of others, states had a strategic vision of what was in the national interest for which they sought support. This is the origin of the "iron and wheat" alliances that O'Rourke and Williamson credit with undoing "free trade" on the continent. This was a strategy of national economic development and strategic independence under which the major powers were able to successfully increase their economic growth rates. For evidence of this I would recommend Paul Bairoch's book Economics and World History (Univ. of Chicago, 1993). As the great economic thinker Joseph Schumpeter observed "the consistent support given by the American people to protectionist policies...is accounted for not by any love for or domination by big business, but by a fervant wish to build and keep a world of their own and to be rid of all the vicissitudes of the rest of the world." This is true of most people, most places---which is why the current fad of globalization will not last either.

This book is not an easy read. Especially if you are not interested in economics and lack basic economics terminologies, you'll certainly have difficulties appreciating this book the way it should be. It is, however, an tremendously insightful story of the evolution and devolution of globalizm in the world in the late 19th century and early 20th century. It, in rigorous details, shows how an earlier period of globalization in the late 19th century was self-destructed by the very same forces that established it as a significant force in the global economic system. It reflects how easy it is to lose the benefits of economic globalism which we today often take for granted.

Overall, this is a decent overview of Orthodox architecture, iconography and music. Each subject is divided into early Church, Byzantine, and Russian. I found the book informative, enjoyable, and helpful when it discusses an overview of the subject, or concepts, principles, and practical application. However, considerable space is spent on descriptions of various churches and iconography with little analysis. It is understandable that this book is an overview and not intended to be an in-depth analysis of historical examples, but I didn't find the descriptions all that interesting or informative.I appreciate Metropolitan Hilarion's balance of piety and academic detachment. He is certainly not disrespectful, skeptical, or impious and does not attempt to scandalize the reader, but neither does he completely ignore modern scholarship. As an example, in his discussion of the icon of Christ Pantocrater from the Monastery of St. Catherine at Sinai, he makes note of the asymmetry of Christ's face. He mentions that some art historians see this as an attempt to portray the dual natures of Christ, but that it is also possibly evidence of restoration efforts by a later artist. My main complaint with the Kindle edition is that the images are ridiculously small and can't be enlarged. The images are especially important in a book that is two-thirds about architecture and iconography. It is worthwhile to look up images of each church and icon in the book to get a better idea of what is being discussed. The publisher should update the Kindle version to at least make the images capable of enlargement.

Best "systematic theology" equivalent in the Orthodox faith. I'm a Protestant trying to understand Orthodoxy in the best light possible. Alfeyev's books were recommended by a priest that I know, and I haven't been disappointed. Far more devotional than the normal Systematic Theology books that I read in seminary. Puts them to shame, really.

An excellent overview of Orthodox Christianity, well-written, informative. Part of a three volume set and all three volumes are excellent.

This text, although filled with opinion, is used in catechism classes. Insightful writer and theologian.

We could find better book on the subject. Interesting introduction for

I was slightly more than disappointed with this edition. There is no comparison to the original Russian edition - starting with bright, coloured illustrations and ending with proper quality of paper (think illustrated photoalbum or encyclopedia; the English one is just cheap photocopy paper similar to yellowish toilet paper..). The Russian edition also had an entire chapter on Divine Services. To be honest, that was the part I was mostly looking forward to in this edition. Overall, I'm not sure about the organizing principles beyond the material for these series (what were the translators or producers thinking?), as the first volume has also material missing from the original version, not to mention the present volume.

Mae Adams was born in Korea in 1933 as the second daughter of an aristocratic family and abandoned by her mother when she was born, for she was not a son she wanted or needed. In the Korean family system of that time, the first-born son was a blessing as he inherited the family fortune and was responsible for the entire family. After the war, she became the breadwinner of her family, managing export businesses, and dreamed of going to America to get a college education. She met the man of her dreams, an American Marine colonel, but left him to pursue her education.During the three years of her separation from him, she continued a long-distance love affair with the colonel. Finally, she married her colonel and raised a family. After 43 years together, her husband passed away when she was 71. Through the grieving process, she started to write her memoir as therapy. From that first book, “Precious Silver Chopsticks” was born. She is now working on her second and third books. Her step-grandmother raised her like her daughter in a Korean mountain village. She was a commoner.Family blood didn’t run in her grandma’s veins, but Mae believed that the hand of Providence blessed her special relationship with her. Was the blessing of Providence not more powerful than a mere family bloodline? She took care of her for the first crucial year of her life.Living through World War II and the Korean War and overcoming many more obstacles, in 1961, Mae went to the United States at the age of 28, to get a college education.Three years later, she married a US Marine colonel whom she met in Korea and raised a family. She ran a successful business until her husband had a stroke in 1991 and became the primary caregiver for her husband for the last thirteen years of his life. Now (2017) she is in her early eighties and still in good health. English is her fourth language, and she still has trouble struggling through English grammar. So, she wrote this book from her heart, out of love and gratitude for her grandma, husband, and all the wonderful people in her life. She lives in McCormick, SC, USA, near her daughter’s family. This book reflects the author's life, touching on subjects that touched her soul, like the influence of upper-class, social standing, economic and cultural upbringing, Korean history, virtues and rites, education and more. These aspects played an important role with fate on the path of her life.Confucian guidelines of gender and class segregation.is explained in the book: “Be a humble wife. Control your emotions or desires. Accept the treatment of your husband, either good or bad. A good wife doesn’t question her husband even if he sleeps with a gisaeng or a concubine. She should keep her mouth shut if he walks out on her and should accept him gracefully if he comes back. A good wife doesn’t have an opinion. .. ...Who cares about that rotten eighteenth-century Confucian virtue?, the author thought. We mostly learn of Mae's dreams of a new life, loves and husband. Her marriages, hardships of war, her escape to South Korea, and challenges risen from family discord, religion, superstitions, spirituality, evil spirits, and more, are dominant. The title of the book : "about silver chopsticks" made me realize to find deeper meaning:Mae says:"Wait! I had my silver chopsticks in my pants pocket. Could I kill a man with my silver chopsticks? If so, how and where in his body should I stick them? But, didn’t Little-Pa tell me that my chopsticks could protect me from any worldly harm?"Mae was given the chopsticks at birth.... and when she came to a cross-road, we sought power in her chopsticks.Mae's grandma says:“If you have your silver chopsticks, you will never be hungry. I don’t want you to be hungry ever, my child. They will also protect you from poisonous food by changing colors. So, if you ever see the color of your chopsticks change, don’t eat the food,” she said. “Grandma, would anybody want to poison my food?” But as a child the noodles kept on slipping, sliding and falling off her chopsticks. When she got tired of that, she grabbed a handful of noodles with her hand and stuffed them into ger mouth, while nobody was looking, but that was the only time.Mae had to learn how to handle them because she was afraid that the old man who made her chopsticks would get mad and take them away from her by some magic.Yes, Mae could easily write a book about the life she lived with Hewitt and says:"It wasn’t all white rice and a garden of Everlasting Flowers. I even stumbled on some thorny bushes that hurt me......"He was eighty-nine years old. His last moment was peaceful, in his bed, in the privacy of his castle. Later, Mae found her silver chopsticks nestled among Hewitt's insignias and medals in his treasure box. Mae knew he had them, but she never looked for them. She had used the chopsticks as a symbol of connection between her and her husband. as divine protection. At his death, she gaveher silver chopsticks back to Hewitt to keep them for her, until they are together again..Yes., her beginning was very shaky. Her mother abandoned her. Her father ignored her. She had faced many pangs of hunger, many dangers, and many near deaths, but has survived them all. So, why should she not believe in the magic of her precious silver chopsticks?Excerpt:"But, I had come too far from the little girl in a mountain village who believed in the magic of the world. So, I would like to say that the magic was in my grandma’s true love for me, and the symbol of her love had rubbed on the old Silversmith-Chun, all the wonderful people who loved me and protected me and helped me overcome all my obstacles. Was there any other weapon that could surpass such deep love breathed in my grandma’s heart? .....Her love and her death also taught me to forgive my parents for whatever wrongs they had done."So why did she put up with her Mother at all?"She gave birth to me, and without her, I wouldn’t have existed. Also, she was the inevitable link in the chain that brought Hewitt to me, and I couldn’t deny that fact, although my actions were deeply involved in meeting with Hewitt. But most of all, I loved her despite whatever pain she inflicted on me because deep down in my heart, those four simple words: “come home to you.” I wrapped them in the finest silk and stored them deep in my heart. They were the miracle words I had been waiting for all my life, though not in the same exact words. At once, they erased all the thousand hurtful things she had done to me. Then, I began to write a letter to her hoping she would receive it before she passed away. "A very touching journal of love, and old wisdoms.Scarlett Jensen23 May 2018

Precious Silver Chopsticks by Mae Adams is an uplifting and heartbreaking story of a woman who started at the top, fell to the bottom, and climbed the ladder to return to the top. Mae was born in North Korea in 1933. Being the second daughter in the family, she was pushed aside by both her father and her mother. Her father ignored her because he had wanted a son, but never caused her any harrm. Her mother was more abusive in her treatment of Mae to seek love elsewhere, and she found it with her grandmother and grandfather. While her parents were wealthy and part of the aristocracy, her grandparents were commoners which allowed her to experience life from two different perspectives. This allowed her to grow as a person in ways that were greatly help her later in life. She learned that anything worth having has to be earned, and that people who you can count on will do anything for you no matter the cost. This was especially true after WW II when her family fled to the south. From here, the aristocratic life was over and the hard work had to begin. But Mae had already learned how to overcome these obstacles and she knew how to lift herself back up.This was a phenomenal read. Mae has done a wonderful job telling us the hardships she had to go through and the victories she accomplished on the road to where she is today. The story is well written a great attention has been given to editing and flow. This is just one more feather in an already very full cap. Excellent job to the author, and I hope that she continues to write.

Precious Silver Chopsticks wonderfully written memoir of a North Korean girl and her journey to America. From her childhood days to a successful career and family life, Mae Adams relates all the perils and difficulties she went through. Facing her mother’s rejection, her life with her grandmother in rural North Korea, having to flee to South Korea after World War II and enduring Japanese invasion, her story is full of sorrow, but with a great reward waiting for her. Now, with a family of her own, Mae Adams lets the reader into her journey and a fantastic cultural glimpse of her native country. From her early childhood Adams faced tremendous hardship. Born into a wealthy and noble family, her mother rejected her and sent her to her grandmother, a kind woman who teaches Adams about her Korean heritage. From then on, Adams relates her life experiences, moving to the U.S. to pursue a college education and marrying a Marine officer she met in Korea. The book is a delectable maelstrom of cultural clashes, from her Japanese-styled education in Korea, which was very highly regarded, concluding with her inspiring life in the U.S., where she still lives at the age of 80.

This is an extraordinary book written by an extraordinary woman. Mary Adams, the second daughter of an aristocratic family, she spent her childhood in North Korea her mother abandoned her because she wasn't a son so she was raised by her grandmother in a remote mountain village. She became a refugee at the end of the Second World War and during the Korean War made her way to the United States in 1961 to attend a college. Three years later she married a US Marine colonel whom she had met earlier in Korea and together they raised a family.Mary ran her own successful business for years until her husband suffered a stroke in 1991, she was his primary caregiver till his death thirteen years later. English is her fourth language.I went into details of telling her story because the book is about the rise of an extraordinary woman in the Korean culture, The book just like the woman is great, it tells a wonderful story and is filled with so many lessons. Personally, I learnt a lot from it and whenever I read a good book there is nothing I love more than passing it on to others and if you're contemplating getting this book, go ahead it's a great book, it's insightful and thought provoking, no reader wouldn't be charmed by her. All round a very good book which I strongly recommend.

About the Author

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors’ prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and “slave” factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years’ formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney’s clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.

PrefaceI have endeavoured in this Ghostly book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their house pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it.Their faithful Friend and Servant,C. D.December 18431Marley’s GhostMarley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge’s name was good upon ‘Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a doornail.Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a doornail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a doornail.Scrooge knew he was dead? Of course he did. How could it be otherwise? Scrooge and he were partners for I don’t know how many years. Scrooge was his sole executor, his sole administrator, his sole assign, his sole residuary legatee, his sole friend and sole mourner. And even Scrooge was not so dreadfully cut up by the sad event, but that he was an excellent man of business on the very day of the funeral, and solemnized it with an undoubted bargain. The mention of Marley’s funeral brings me back to the point I started from. There is no doubt that Marley was dead. This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate. If we were not perfectly convinced that Hamlet’s Father died before the play began, there would be nothing more remarkable in his taking a stroll at night, in an easterly wind, upon his own ramparts, than there would be in any other middle-aged gentleman rashly turning out after dark in a breezy spot – say Saint Paul’s Churchyard for instance – literally to astonish his son’s weak mind.Scrooge never painted out Old Marley’s name. There it stood, years afterwards, above the warehouse door: Scrooge and Marley. The firm was known as Scrooge and Marley. Sometimes people new to the business called Scrooge Scrooge, and sometimes Marley, but he answered to both names: it was all the same to him.Oh! but he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster. The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, shrivelled his cheek, stiffened his gait, made his eyes red, his thin lips blue; and spoke out shrewdly in his grating voice. A frosty rime was on his head, and on his eyebrows, and his wiry chin. He carried his own low temperature always about with him; he iced his office in the dog-days; and didn’t thaw it one degree at Christmas.External heat and cold had little influence on Scrooge. No warmth could warm, nor wintry weather chill him. No wind that blew was bitterer than he, no falling snow was more intent upon its purpose, no pelting rain less open to entreaty. Foul weather didn’t know where to have him. The heaviest rain, and snow, and hail, and sleet, could boast of the advantage over him in only one respect. They often ‘came down’ handsomely, and Scrooge never did.Nobody ever stopped him in the street to say, with gladsome looks, ‘My dear Scrooge, how are you? when will you come to see me?’ No beggars implored him to bestow a trifle, no children asked him what it was o’clock, no man or woman ever once in all his life inquired the way to such and such a place, of Scrooge. Even the blindmen’s dogs appeared to know him; and when they saw him coming on, would tug their owners into doorways and up courts; and then would wag their tails as though they said, ‘No eye at all is better than an evil eye, dark master!’But what did Scrooge care? It was the very thing he liked. To edge his way along the crowded paths of life, warning all human sympathy to keep its distance, was what the knowing ones call ‘nuts’ to Scrooge.Once upon a time – of all the good days in the year, on Christmas Eve – old Scrooge sat busy in his counting-house. It was cold, bleak, biting weather: foggy withal: and he could hear the people in the court outside, go wheezing up and down, beating their hands upon their breasts, and stamping their feet upon the pavement-stones to warm them. The city clocks had only just gone three, but it was quite dark already: it had not been light all day: and candles were flaring in the windows of the neighbouring offices, like ruddy smears upon the palpable brown air. The fog came pouring in at every chink and keyhole, and was so dense without, that although the court was of the narrowest, the houses opposite were mere phantoms. To see the dingy cloud come drooping down, obscuring everything, one might have thought that Nature lived hard by, and was brewing on a large scale. The door of Scrooge’s counting-house was open that he might keep his eye upon his clerk, who in a dismal little cell beyond, a sort of tank, was copying letters. Scrooge had a very small fire, but the clerk’s fire was so very much smaller that it looked like one coal. But he couldn’t replenish it, for Scrooge kept the coal-box in his own room; and so surely as the clerk came in with the shovel, the master predicted that it would be necessary for them to part. Wherefore the clerk put on his white comforter, and tried to warm himself at the candle; in which effort, not being a man of a strong imagination, he failed.‘A merry Christmas, uncle! God save you!’ cried a cheerful voice. It was the voice of Scrooge’s nephew, who came upon him so quickly that this was the first intimation he had of his approach.‘Bah!’ said Scrooge, ‘Humbug!’He had so heated himself with rapid walking in the fog and frost, this nephew of Scrooge’s, that he was all in a glow; his face was ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled, and his breath smoked again.‘Christmas a humbug, uncle!’ said Scrooge’s nephew. ‘You don’t mean that, I am sure?’‘I do,’ said Scrooge. ‘Merry Christmas! What right have you to be merry? What reason have you to be merry? You’re poor enough.’‘Come, then,’ returned the nephew gaily. ‘What right have you to be dismal? What reason have you to be morose? You’re rich enough.’Scrooge having no better answer ready on the spur of the moment, said, ‘Bah!’ again; and followed it up with ‘Humbug’.‘Don’t be cross, uncle,’ said the nephew.‘What else can I be,’ returned the uncle, ‘when I live in such a world of fools as this? Merry Christmas! Out upon merry Christmas! What’s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, and not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in ’em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you? If I could work my will,’ said Scrooge, indignantly, ‘every idiot who goes about with “Merry Christmas”, on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!’‘Uncle!’ pleaded the nephew.‘Nephew!’ returned the uncle, sternly, ‘keep Christmas in your own way, and let me keep it in mine.’‘Keep it!’ repeated Scrooge’s nephew. ‘But you don’t keep it.’‘Let me leave it alone, then,’ said Scrooge. ‘Much good may it do you! Much good it has ever done you!’‘There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say,’ returned the nephew: ‘Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round – apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that – as a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!’The clerk in the tank involuntarily applauded: becoming immediately sensible of the impropriety, he poked the fire, and extinguished the last frail spark for ever.‘Let me hear another sound from you,’ said Scrooge, ‘and you’ll keep your Christmas by losing your situation. You’re quite a powerful speaker, sir,’ he added, turning to his nephew. ‘I wonder you don’t go into Parliament.’‘Don’t be angry, uncle. Come! Dine with us tomorrow.’Scrooge said that he would see him – yes, indeed he did. He went the whole length of the expression, and said that he would see him in that extremity first.‘But why?’ cried Scrooge’s nephew. ‘Why?’‘Why did you get married?’ said Scrooge.‘Because I fell in love.’‘Because you fell in love!’ growled Scrooge, as if that were the only one thing in the world more ridiculous than a merry Christmas. ‘Good afternoon!’‘Nay, uncle, but you never came to see me before that happened. Why give it as a reason for not coming now?’‘Good afternoon,’ said Scrooge.‘I want nothing from you; I ask nothing of you; why cannot we be friends?’‘Good afternoon,’ said Scrooge.‘I am sorry, with all my heart, to find you so resolute. We have never had any quarrel, to which I have been a party. But I have made the trial in homage to Christmas, and I’ll keep my Christmas humour to the last. So A Merry Christmas, uncle!’‘Good afternoon,’ said Scrooge.‘And A Happy New Year!’‘Good afternoon!’ said Scrooge. His nephew left the room without an angry word, notwithstanding. He stopped at the outer door to bestow the greetings of the season on the clerk, who, cold as he was, was warmer than Scrooge; for he returned them cordially.‘There’s another fellow,’ muttered Scrooge; who overheard him: ‘my clerk, with fifteen shillings a-week, and a wife and family, talking about a merry Christmas. I’ll retire to Bedlam.’This lunatic, in letting Scrooge’s nephew out, had let two other people in. They were portly gentlemen, pleasant to behold, and now stood, with their hats off, in Scrooge’s office. They had books and papers in their hands, and bowed to him.‘Scrooge and Marley’s, I believe,’ said one of the gentlemen, referring to his list. ‘Have I the pleasure of addressing Mr Scrooge, or Mr Marley?’‘Mr Marley has been dead these seven years,’ Scrooge replied. ‘He died seven years ago, this very night.’‘We have no doubt his liberality is well represented by his surviving partner,’ said the gentleman, presenting his credentials. It certainly was; for they had been two kindred spirits. At the ominous word ‘liberality’, Scrooge frowned, and shook his head, and handed the credentials back.‘At this festive season of the year, Mr Scrooge,’ said the gentleman, taking up a pen, ‘it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.’‘Are there no prisons?’ asked Scrooge.‘Plenty of prisons,’ said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.‘And the Union workhouses?’ demanded Scrooge. ‘Are they still in operation?’‘They are. Still,’ returned the gentleman, ‘I wish I could say they were not.’‘The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?’ said Scrooge.‘Both very busy,’‘Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,’ said Scrooge. ‘I’m very glad to hear it.’‘Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude,’ returned the gentleman, ‘a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth. We choose this time because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?’‘Nothing!’ Scrooge replied.‘You wish to be anonymous?’‘I wish to be left alone,’ said Scrooge. ‘Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don’t make merry myself at Christmas, and I can’t afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned: they cost enough: and those who are badly off must go there.’‘Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.’‘If they would rather die,’ said Scrooge, ‘they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. Besides – excuse me – I don’t know that.’‘But you might know it,’ observed the gentleman.‘It’s not my business,’ Scrooge returned. ‘It’s enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other people’s. Mine occupies me constantly. Good afternoon, gentlemen!’Seeing clearly that it would be useless to pursue their point, the gentlemen withdrew. Scrooge resumed his labours with an improved opinion of himself, and in a more facetious temper than was usual with him.

I can’t begin to tell you how delighted I was to find CD’s A Christmas Carol, unabridged, and accompanied with such beautiful pictures and delicious recipes! Puffin Books has really hit the nail on the head by combining two of my passions: classic literature with cooking! I’ve already bought Pride & Prejudice, which is also in this “Book-To-Table Classic” series, and I can’t wait to see if more are added!

I bought this for a friend who has a collection of various versions of A Christmas Carol. The twist on this one is the inclusion of holiday recipes throughout the text. She loved it. Thank you!

Great recipes! Adorable idea! Loved it so much I bought one as a gift! Very nicely bound. This book will definitely be passed down and the recipes are sure to become family traditions!

This edition just begs to be read aloud and shared with the family. Even if you don't make the recipes, they are so much fun to drool over! Just don't get your drool on this lovely book!

The story is one of the best for Christmas. The book isn’t illustrated for kids, but includes some nice recipes with photos to try for the holiday season.

Loved the movie, the book is great.

Love the size and the recipies included.

What a great take on a Christmas classic!

Am only giving this 5 stars because I can't possibly give it 10 stars. No kidding! I dissociated myself earlier this year from the JW. I was a third generation JW, born in it - 30years. Its been really tough. Oh, being shunned by people I have known for years, people I always had in my house for dinner parties. Despite the pain, I just know I can't go back. This cold treatment just reinforces my reason for leaving which was my observation of fake friendships, my lack of intellectual freedom and coldness of it all.I think I wasn't prepared, despite taking my time to dissociate it has still been a struggle. I really love this book. I have read other books on this topic but in terms of actual techniques for healing, this is the best. I love the debriefing and visualization techniques. I have immediately started debriefing myself everyday. Its a new concept and immensely helpful. I have decided to formally mourn and grieve the loss of my social structure. I also like the suggestion to take time before embracing another religion. I kind of hate the idea of church now but mostly because I feel cheated by an religious organization I sincerely believed was build on Christian love. I also like the idea that we must show compassion for those who are required to shun us, its unnatural and difficult for them as well.Despite all this, I really love the freedom and joy I am enjoying now which I never had. The painful moments are fewer and keep decreasing. Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing this book!

All my life I have rested all my faith, dreams, thoughts, you name it, on the Watchtower Society. I am a 45 year old man. Just left 9 months ago. Stopped all Wt. activity 2 months back. Just about had a nervous breakdown. For two months I cried everyday at least once, like a child who's "Mother" abandoned him when I discovered all the lies, cover- ups, scandals. I loved my life as a witness. I was a zealous unstoppable "Jehu". But that dream ended in an instant of time. The worst nightmare of any witness came true. The "apostates" were right all along! As a suggestion, I believe that these 4 books should be sold as a rescue kit for ex-JW's:Crisis of Conscience, In Search of Christian Freedom, Combatting Cult Mind Control, and this MOST excellent book!!!! I suggest reading these books in this order. Their is no book that can help you get on with your life quite like this book. Written by someone who was truly involved with the Watchtower and now a professional in psychology . This book gives practical, professional advice on how to deal with the psychopathic residue of this most deceptive cult. Escape the childlike behavior of having to answer to "Mother". Stand proud and feel good about your independence . Having been a totally indoctrinated "true believer", I am critical about many books. Some seem empty and repetitive about escaping the Watchtower. This is not like that. It has substance you can dig into. Do not waste time. Hit the purchase button NOW!

Just started reading this book and can't stop. The author gives practical advice to JWs thinking about leaving, those in the process of leaving and those who have already exited the organization. I am Stull in the process of reading this book. Actually, I am holding it right now and will resume reading after I complete this review. I recommend this book highly. I wish it were available when I left 26 years ago. Thank you so much Bonnie for lovingly providing this book.

Having been born and raised in a devout JW family, and having married into an equally devout JW family, I began discerning distinctions between Bible teachings and certain Watchtower teachings by the time I turned 30. That is when I began struggling with intense feelings of guilt, although I had not adopted a practice or lifestyle for which one could be disfellowshipped from one's congregation. By the time I turned 60, I realized I could no longer accept, support or recommend the JW religion, yet I was not free to pursue Christian fellowship outside the JW religion without dire consequences; therefore, I finally disassociated from JWs, yet my feelings of guilt only intensified. Psychotherapist Bonnie Zieman helped me identify two likely sources of the guilt which has plagued me for more than 30 years. EXISTENTIAL GUILT results from denying one's true self, especially when one fails to meet one's true potential, a feeling with which many JWs can identify. NEUROTIC GUILT comes from an imagined transgression such as changing one's mind on religious matters and leaving one's religion, a feeling with which most ex-JWs can identify. While existential guilt can serve as a healthy guide back to one's true self, neurotic guilt is unhealthy and damaging and is the type of guilt placed on doubting JWs by the Watchtower. If one does not understand the difference between the positive and negative types of guilt, the punitive part of one's mind (called the Superego) assumes one has sinned and deserves punishment, and one can end up unknowingly creating forms of self-punishment (e.g. depression, failures, accidents, chronic pain, illnesses, chronic anxiety, self-sabotage, etc.) Changing one's mind and leaving the Watchtower organization is not a sin, and one doing so certainly deserves no punishment! This is what I learned from Bonnie Zieman's wonderful book, and Bonnie provides many practical suggestions on how to rid oneself of such damaging guilt so that one can enjoy a happy and fulfilling life outside of the Watchtower Society. Thank you, Bonnie Zieman!

I appreciate the good advice in this book. It doesn't deal with the cults belief's so much as it helps us see ways of recovering from the control the religion exercises over our minds.

I was in this cult for 45 years. An "elder" for some 20 years. This book is an excellent portrayal of life inside, the difficulty of getting out, and how to normalize in the real world. Just as an aside, I have never been happier in my life than I am now. Freedom tastes so sweet when you've been a slave for so long! Thank you Bonnie Zieman!

Review

“"The best biography of Eugene Debs yet publishedÂ….A valuable contribution to the history of American political and economic radicalism.”——American Historical Review Â“"Masterful.”——Michael Harrington Â“"The Bending Cross offers us an old-fashioned—and, yes, incorrigibly romantic—ethos for activism; an antidote to jaded postmodernist cynicism, made compelling and coherent by the example of Debs’s own life. It is ironic that the Socialist leader was imprisoned for ‘disloyalty,’ since what most distinguished Debs was his moral steadfastness and unbreakable loyalty to the labor movement.”——Mike Davis, from the Introduction "The Bending Cross is a beautiful and important book, even after all these years and the further accumulation of scholarship on the life of Eugene V. Debs. Ray Ginger, a socialist scholar of the heart as well as the mind, captured the real Debs. Hurrah for this reprinting!"—Paul Buhle, co-scriptwriter of Eugene V..Debs: A Graphic Biography

Ray Ginger’s intention of writing this book was to make a biography on Eugene V. Debs. This book set out to eloquently write the origins of Debs from his early personal life and into his political life. Ginger’s book has become the standard on which biographies of Debs have been written. Ginger is successful in writing a well-articulated biography of the great labor leader Eugene V. Debs.Ginger begins the book with a background on Debs’ life starting with his father in the 1820’s and moving quickly to the early life of Debs. The book is separated in four parts that detail major points in Deb’s life. The book outlines key themes and shows the humanity, loyalty, and charity of Debs throughout his lifetime. The book is organized chronologically from the beginning of Debs’ life and places much of the focus on the political life of Debs. The main thesis of this book is that Debs’ Midwestern values coupled with his upbringing led him to be a humanitarian. It also made him an excellent organizer and orator for the common person. This book contributes to the wealth of knowledge by being the first major biography of Eugene V. Debs. There are other biographies written about Debs since, but this is considered to be the backbone of other writings.Ginger wrote this book from an unbiased historical perspective. The book is written with a great deal of respect to Debs and his career. Ginger was a labor historian and he wrote from a place of sympathy for Debs, but he also highlighted the not so glamorous side of Debs. Ginger highlights very early in the book that Debs was known for his regular appearances at the saloon, his fondness of racial humor and even his bigotry. Ginger does not let his bias for labor history or Debs cloud his overall body of work and the presentation of the material. This book is a very readable book. The book has a great flow that is not hard to follow mainly because it is written in a chronological order. Ginger penned this book for the average reader. This is not to say that the book is not helpful for any historian or student. This book was written for everyone from a historian to a general railway worker. Ginger’s book is impressive because he offered many different sources including thirteen pages of primary, pamphlets, selected letters, and secondary sources. Most of the sources mentioned are primary documents and letters. However, Ginger does not offer footnotes. Rather, Ginger places “selected chapter sources” at the end of the book. These chapter sources are not meant to substitute for footnotes but they are given for specific quotes or important facts (460). Ginger sites the reasoning for this is for readability and for length. Much of the research was done at, University of Chicago Library, Chicago Historical Society, Library of Congress, Fairbanks Library of Terre Haute, Indiana State University as well as many other Universities and libraries. Overall the mechanics of the book is more than substantial enough to qualify this book as well

Ray Ginger's absolutely authoritative biography of the great man, Eugene Debs, deserves as wide a reading audience as can possibly be achieved. In this marvellous, well-written and well-researched book, the life and times of Eugene Debs are made accessible to the people of today (or rather, 1947, but it is equally readable now), and thanks to the Haymarket Books reprint Debs can continue to inspire all men of good will even now.The book describes every detail of Debs' life: his upbringing in a petty bourgeois merchant household in Terre Haute, IN, where he was taught the German and French romantic classics by his father (the name Eugene Victor comes from Eugène Sue and Victor Hugo), his first jobs and union involvement on the Vendalia railway, his early leadership in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, his subsequent higher and higher promotions in the union ranks, holding office in Terre Haute in between, then the formation of the American Railway Union, the general strike and destruction of the same, his periods in prison and conversion to Marxism, and finally his political career in the Socialist Party where he made himself immortal in the annals of radical history by winning 6% of the vote in 1912, and also being the only person in American history to win a significant amount of votes while in prison (1920).Some of these events may well be known to many Americans, but many of them probably are not, and all depict the absolute humanity, loyalty, intelligence, cordiality, and charity of Eugene Debs. Indeed sometimes it is astounding how one man could unite so many virtues and be so utterly uncorruptible, leading one to become suspicious whether Debs' reputation is not exaggerated, but fortunately biographer Ray Ginger is always careful to substantiate the claims when true (which is almost always) and to apply criticism where deserved.Less known in general perhaps, even to people with an existing knowledge of radical history, are the many connections Debs had with other important people of his time: Lincoln Steffens, Robert Ingersoll, Victor Berger, John Altgeld, Susan B. Anthony, and even a short conversation with Warren Harding in the White House. Debs was never much of a theoretician, and did not read any of Marx' own works (though he knew the popularizers like Kautsky), but he had an infallible sense of the failures of both extreme left sectarianism and excessive reformism in radical movements and labor unionism, and it is rare in the course of this history of Debs' union activities that one can conclude he made the wrong decision. Moreover, much unlike many radicals today, Debs had a supreme capacity for personal love and charity, and was capable of opposing the political decisions and strategies of many other union activists without in any way lessening his personal loyalty or affection for them, or blaming them in person for their views. While an inveterate opponent of all capitalism, he was at the same time by no means a rabid sectarian, and could make himself loved and respected even by his enemies - once he so effectively inveighed against a railroad director in his own office that the director started offering him high level jobs in the company!Debs of course made American political history, not just with his prison campaign in 1920, victim to Woodrow Wilson's political terror; but also with the first campaigning train tour through America (the "Red Special"), with the highest percentage of votes in a Presidential election any left-wing candidate has ever received, and last but not least with his fierce opposition to American participation in World War I, when all tides were against him. This alone would make him a hero of socialism. But he equally deserves recognition for his remarkable goodness in his personal dealings: he refused all offers of careering and high wages, refused all attempts of union federations to lavish gifts or praise upon him, and was known for giving away large amounts of his money even when he could not afford it. When the ARU collapsed under the military terror of the American government, he personally took all the debts of the union on him, which it took him 18 years to pay off. He was even loved by all the inmates of the Atlanta prison during his stay there. Add to this his visionary and consistent support for the rights of women, blacks, and immigrants, when such things were radical even among radicals, and Eugene V. Debs indeed is nothing but an example to us all. If I had but one-tenth of the quality of Debs, I would have much to be proud of.

very good bookEugene V Debs is unknown to many in American History...and that's just terrible. It really brings to light how much of a total scum bag woodrow wilson really was...and makes you question as to why Wilson was even in the "10 greatest presidents of all time" list. Debs was silenced with the Espionage and Sedition Acts (because of his socialist beliefs) which was made because of people like him...nothing really to do with spies of foreign nations (as we think it is for). Wilson carried out lynchings, hired mobs of corporate workers to shoot and kill Union leaders and protesters....and did everything he could to stop blacks from living comfortably. Eugene V Debs fought for women...blacks, unions, the eight hour work day...livable wages, pensions, insurance, and sick leave....and he was treated like a criminal at every turn for his noble actions.

Debs has been a lost American icon. He was certainly not a perfect moral example of knighthood but he stuck to his cause in the face of the vicious Red Scares, the Palmer Raids, and the idiocy of the Woodrow Wilson administration. Debs stood up to and spoke Truth to Power and got nailed for it . Debs was also a very compassionate man as he was constantly giving away his coat, his money, and anything else that he had that some poor railroad worker or his family needed. He may be as close to Dostyevsky's Idiot as America may get. It was a pleasant discovery about Eugene Debs.
