Robert Allen has produced an amazing work on the oft-reported saga of the Marine Corps and Iwo Jima, that terrible island. As an amateur military historian (and former Marine who has attempted to reconstruct certain campaigns), I found myself asking over and over again: where and how did he get this information? how long did it take to accurately compile, for instance, the daily "muster rolls" of an entire battalion in the field? The picture that emerges of the Iwo Jima assault is even more horrifying from this perspective of dry military "diaries" and the daily recounting of casualties and replacements. This was island warfare against Japan at its worst, and Allen's microscopic treatment helps to bring it all into focus at the fighting man's level. With the United States Government itself doing little to advance in-depth WWII analysis, writers like Allen are doing a great service for those who do care.

Where do I start? There are so many lessons in this book. Lessons about forgiveness, friendship, trust, vision, hope, grief, marriage, parenting and much more. I absolutely adored this book!! I immediately fell in love with Henry (the irresistible, backward-walking donkey) and was amazed by the way that the author honestly shared her heartbreaks/ life struggles in a way that points us to God and His goodness! I loved the prayers that she shared, and definitely want to incorporate them into my daily conversations with the Lord. I pre-ordered this book for two of my good friends who live on farms and love the Lord...I know that they will be blessed by the book just as much as I have been! I highly recommend this book; my spiritual life has been deeply impacted by the lessons that were shared.

Reading this book was like visiting an old friend you haven’t seen for a while. I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with Rachel and Flash and meeting the new member of the family, Henderson Number 10, better known as Henry. Other then the occasional Bohemian slang of the fifties, it still is as fresh as todays New York Times. Going through these verses took me back to days filled with youth, and the growing concern for where we would go and could we do any better than the last generation. This was a question that bothered many of the creative people during this time, certainly this was a type of hip poetry that reached a bit into the same bag as Ginsberg , Burroughs' and others of the "Beat Generation", the reason why this stayed fresher in my opinion, is it went beyond the hip to attract a whole audience to modern poetry.I was fortunate in a sense to be exposed to poetry in an early age, my father and I both had played with poetry in are creative formative years. I am sure it was WW II that ended his writing as much as Vietnam War an the holocaust that it was amidst ended mine.To anyone who may consider buying this work, this is a work that expanded Ferlinghetti's work to a new generation. It was cool enough for many in the 1960's bought it just to look cool as they walked through the halls of education. "I know this much, that any society that pays more attention to it's politicos than poets is one that is doomed to decay and destruction." This last line may be something I read or wrote, at my age so many of these things merge, but I do believe it is worth consideration, as it this volume. Watch out, I plan to review other American Poet's.

This book is the beginning of the beginning of the Beat Generation. Even though Ferlinghetti preferred to be considered a bohemian poet there is no denying his integral role in the upstart of the poetry of the Beat generation. It was Ferlinghetti whose City Lights publishing that published Allen Ginsberg's 'Howl and Other Poems' which almost got him in a lot of trouble as far as the whole obscenity trial. But what most peoele don't know is that it was Ferlinghetti's 'Pictures of the Gone World' and 'A Coney Island of the Mind', published before Ginsberg's 'Howl and Other Poems', that truly sparked the sea change in the literary world of the 1950s and forever.' I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the origins of Beat poetry. This amazing book is truly the beginning of the beginning.

a long time favorite and a classic that deserves a spot on every book shelf. I bought this copy to infect my most literate granddaughter with some of Ferlinghetti's wonderful word paintings. "the pennycandystore beyond the El is where I first fell in love with unreality" The man and the book is a treasure.

First purchased in paperback in the 60's, this went missing even as my brain, 50 years later, wanted to experience it again. The CD is lovely (driving around listening to Ferlinghetti read his poetry on your car CD player ... a mind blower, for sure), the book itself is perfectly reproduced ... what's not to love? The poems themselves might seem a little dated if you are stuck in your own time zone (as would Shakespeare, if he weren't Holy) ...but you know, there's a lot of interesting stuff going on here.

More beat stuff that hipsters love. I have one question, where’s the grit in any of this? Nowhere. I also HATE the formatting of this book. It messes with the cadence and flow of the reading of it, so much that it ruins the poems for me.However if you’re a fan of Jack Kerouac, then I highly suggest this book. You will adore it.

I read this book when it was first published. Everything in it struck a chord with me. I loved it. Now I am buying it for my granddaughter, who is about the age I was when I first came across it, and asked me about my beatnik days in North beach in the 1950s. What better picture of that era than this book? She loved it. I highly recommend it.

I personally am not a fan of poetry, but since I had recently become interested in Beat literature, I felt I must read this collection of poems by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The book is comprised of three sets of poems. In the first set is a rant against the absurdities of American culture. While I wouldn't consider myself an angry young man, I found this section to be quite refreshing.The second set of poems, an Oral Message, is meant to be read aloud with jazz accompaniment. These were written in the 50's so it's sort of like a precursor to rap. I think I would have enjoyed this much more if I had seen it performed live.The final 13 poems are from his first book and deal mostly with death.Like I said I am not a huge fan of poetry, and most of these poems were case of hit or miss. Most enjoyed a great deal, some I didn't understand at all. Sometimes it was just a case of line or phrase that I found inspiring, but over all I really did enjoy this collection.

OK, so I am a 'political nerd', having grown up in the Washington, D.C. area. I was introduced to several (three) of the Federalist Papers back in college (eons ago), but nothing Anti-Federalist. This being an election year there have been many different interpretations of the Constitution and other rights being bandied about, so I wanted to 'go to the source' to read what was actually put on paper by our forefathers and form my own opinions. WOW. This book absolutely fits what I was looking for -- the original Federal and Anti-Federal arguments. As you read this book you can hear the back-and-forth discussions and astute observations as our forefathers worked through many issues. If you're into political science, this is a must-have. Given the current political climate, it may also prove to be very grounding.

A nice compilation, though the table of contents is über weak. It could at least describe the content of a given paper, or list the author. Instead it looks like this:Federalist 1 ..... page 1Federalist 2 ..... page 2I mean, come on.

Anyone interested would do well to have a copy in their library, so I give it five stars because it is a useful one volume source for these important arguments wound around the ratification of our constitution. What I don't like is how the book is constructed. It is a print on demand which is bad enough, but the design is atrocious and hardly qualifies as a book, the type is sharper and cleared than other PODs I've come across, but the margins are sub par. While reading is easy enough, there is no room for running commentary, fore paper is entirely lacking, the back paper is ample enough for notes and jeeze an index. There is no running title at the head of the pages, only a constant reminder of the book's title and page numbers are awkwardly placed at the bottom of the page. The author attribution on the title page looks like a rubber stamp, the TOC and running header title are both sans serif type which make them look like stop signs, however, the text body is serif type which is more pleasing to the eye. The binding is more or less industry standard, but I'm not convinced it will stand up to much wear, nor rugged enough for travel. Wait an see what happens after the glue dries. Clearly since no thought went into the design and that this seems the only one volume edition available in print, it's moot to say one could do worse or for that matter better. Since it's a POD a better alternative might to find a second hand copy in decent condition. Will I return it, naaaa; since I bought it I retain privilege of critique. It's still useful enough.

I like it because it seems complete. But then that is what it is advertized to be. Meeting the minimum required gets it an average rating. Where it should pick up extra points is in presentation and indexing. It fails to earn additional points. The table of contents is minimal and does not even show who wrote a given paper. There is NO index or cross reference of any kind. There is a section called Popullar Highlights that appears to be some memorable qoutes, but it is so under done as to be useless. So this is a very basic listing of the papers with NO frills at all.

IF you want to know the process that the founding Fathers used to craft the DoIndependence and the US Constitution, and establish courts and divisions of labor or responsibility, REAL NEWS to make your OWN decisions, this is the one to read. EVERY student of LAW and Justice should HAVE to read and understand these concepts, opinions (which differed greatly) and then reason-out the concluded docs. Today, so many courts and/or law makers at every level, seem to over-look or disregard these fundamental rules and/or premises for WHY the constitution was drafted in this manner. As a CRJ professional for over thirty years, from steet cop to Judge, I strongly recommend a study of these docs, to understand (partially) why there is so much disparity in Law vs Outcomes. Some trials hinge on ONE word in the applicable doctrine or Constitutional designation. i.e. Thou shall (not) .....and Congress shall...or shall not...Careful study of these founding documents can help you see through the constuctionist judges and IGNORANT congressional BILLS, that clearly become over-turned or should be, at every level of the process. DO NOT be deceived. Every law is not on keeping with U S Constitution. You can know why if you study these documents.

I read both of these in the past but could not resist the digital version to review, highlight and categorize quotes etc. for my own writing. If you are a student of our system of government the Federalist and the Anti Federalist papers are essential reading. These were literate men and their use of language and sentence structure may seem daunting, but you will be challenged, informed, and enlightened. Worth the effort.

It is so lovely not to have to rely on someone else's interpretation of our founder's words. Here are both sides of the debate, unfiltered, original, priceless!

It's been awhile since I read this, so unfortunately my thoughts aren't fresh and I can't remember specifics. Nevertheless, heregoes: as an academic economist, I liked the book, found it interesting, and liked being walked through lots of interesting facts and data, on stuff like convergence of prices after increases in shipping technology, and on immigration to the new world. Yet, I also felt that the book had no really coherent theme, as material for the book was seemingly chosen out of the authors' published academic papers. As such, it seems like they completely punted on all the important questions about trade, tariffs, and industrial policy. Hajoon Chang writes books with the provocative thesis that no country has ever gotten rich on free trade, and that the protectionism allows countries not at the technological frontier to get there quicker, and, he says, mainstream economists don't believe in this for purely ideological reasons. What are Williamson & O'Rourke's view? As mainstream economists, they almost certainly do not agree with Hajoon Chang. Yet, they give no intellectual counterweight. They say little to nothing about it in the book, which can only lead one to the conclusion that they had not thought seriously about the most important topic falling within the rubric of "Globalization and History". That's a damning critique. (Although, it should be mentioned that O'Rourke has a more recent paper which concludes that countries with industrial tariffs grew faster (from 1870-1913), which is actually supportive of the Chang view...)

I found this book an excellent study that puts globalization discussion in historical (19th century) context, a period of large international capital flows and even larger human capital flows. Th study uses data on these mass movements in production factors to empirically test/uses the standard international trade Heckscher Olin model on income and factor price distribution in trade. It shows that these mass movements had indeed measurable effects on income distribution following some of the model predictions. Problems of globalization in economic terms are indeed linked to the income effects of several groups in the economy following the opening up to increasing trade, investment and migration flows. All too often these discussions are marred by lack of data and lack of historical awareness, and i found this study filling a real gap. It surely will be contested but i found the analysis interesting and well-written. Recommended!

I would agree that this is a very good book in terms of presenting what happened in the 19th century Atlantic economy. I do have one critical observation. The authors blame the collapse of globalization on the lobbying of particular industries; thus setting up the argument that general gains from trade were lost to special interests. This is in accord with their belief that globalization is a good thing. As an economist working on these issues for many years, with experience in government as well as academics and the private sector, I have to disagree. Clearly, governments need to rally constituents to support policies. Yet, from our own Alexander Hamilton to Germany's Otto von Bismarck, and a host of others, states had a strategic vision of what was in the national interest for which they sought support. This is the origin of the "iron and wheat" alliances that O'Rourke and Williamson credit with undoing "free trade" on the continent. This was a strategy of national economic development and strategic independence under which the major powers were able to successfully increase their economic growth rates. For evidence of this I would recommend Paul Bairoch's book Economics and World History (Univ. of Chicago, 1993). As the great economic thinker Joseph Schumpeter observed "the consistent support given by the American people to protectionist policies...is accounted for not by any love for or domination by big business, but by a fervant wish to build and keep a world of their own and to be rid of all the vicissitudes of the rest of the world." This is true of most people, most places---which is why the current fad of globalization will not last either.

This book is not an easy read. Especially if you are not interested in economics and lack basic economics terminologies, you'll certainly have difficulties appreciating this book the way it should be. It is, however, an tremendously insightful story of the evolution and devolution of globalizm in the world in the late 19th century and early 20th century. It, in rigorous details, shows how an earlier period of globalization in the late 19th century was self-destructed by the very same forces that established it as a significant force in the global economic system. It reflects how easy it is to lose the benefits of economic globalism which we today often take for granted.

Overall, this is a decent overview of Orthodox architecture, iconography and music. Each subject is divided into early Church, Byzantine, and Russian. I found the book informative, enjoyable, and helpful when it discusses an overview of the subject, or concepts, principles, and practical application. However, considerable space is spent on descriptions of various churches and iconography with little analysis. It is understandable that this book is an overview and not intended to be an in-depth analysis of historical examples, but I didn't find the descriptions all that interesting or informative.I appreciate Metropolitan Hilarion's balance of piety and academic detachment. He is certainly not disrespectful, skeptical, or impious and does not attempt to scandalize the reader, but neither does he completely ignore modern scholarship. As an example, in his discussion of the icon of Christ Pantocrater from the Monastery of St. Catherine at Sinai, he makes note of the asymmetry of Christ's face. He mentions that some art historians see this as an attempt to portray the dual natures of Christ, but that it is also possibly evidence of restoration efforts by a later artist.My main complaint with the Kindle edition is that the images are ridiculously small and can't be enlarged. The images are especially important in a book that is two-thirds about architecture and iconography. It is worthwhile to look up images of each church and icon in the book to get a better idea of what is being discussed. The publisher should update the Kindle version to at least make the images capable of enlargement.

Best "systematic theology" equivalent in the Orthodox faith. I'm a Protestant trying to understand Orthodoxy in the best light possible. Alfeyev's books were recommended by a priest that I know, and I haven't been disappointed. Far more devotional than the normal Systematic Theology books that I read in seminary. Puts them to shame, really.

An excellent overview of Orthodox Christianity, well-written, informative. Part of a three volume set and all three volumes are excellent.

I was slightly more than disappointed with this edition. There is no comparison to the original Russian edition - starting with bright, coloured illustrations and ending with proper quality of paper (think illustrated photoalbum or encyclopedia; the English one is just cheap photocopy paper similar to yellowish toilet paper..). The Russian edition also had an entire chapter on Divine Services. To be honest, that was the part I was mostly looking forward to in this edition. Overall, I'm not sure about the organizing principles beyond the material for these series (what were the translators or producers thinking?), as the first volume has also material missing from the original version, not to mention the present volume.
