About the Author

Gail Waesche Kislevitz is an award-winning journalist and the author of six books on running and sports. She was a columnist for Runner’s World for fifteen years and her freelance work has appeared in Shape, Marathon and Beyond, and New York Runner. A longtime employee of New York Road Runners, she is a coach for their marathon charity team, Team for Kids. Kislevitz has run twenty-six marathons, and has competed in triathlons, including a Half Ironman. In 2006, she was awarded the RRCA Journalist Excellence Sportswriter Award. Kislevitz lives in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Amby Burfoot won the Boston Marathon in 1968 and joined Runner's World ten years later. He became executive editor in 1985, and he held the position for twenty years before retiring in 2013. Amby has run 110,000 miles in his lifetime and owns the US's longest active "race road streak," having completed the Thanksgiving Day 5-mile run in Manchester, Connecticut, fifty-five years in a row. Currently a writer at-large for Runner's World, he has been honored by numerous running organizations both as an athlete and as a writer. Many of them share nuggets of wisdom about training, racing, and staying motivated. However, running for the LOVE of it—the feelings it brings—is what struck me with almost every story.The book closes with expert advice from a physical therapist, veteran running coach, and a podiatrist who each work with senior runners.Overall, this is an excellent book. As mentioned, the author doesn’t preach her points of view, as many running authors do, but lets the heroes do the talking.Highly recommended.

I loved ready about everyone's stories - the diversity but similarities were a great reminder of what you already intuitively know. I will recommend this book to many of my friends (especially the ones that say they are too old to run anymore).

I started running at 49 and found this book very interesting knowing and being one of the runners. Every chapter is very well written and it is hard to put down. These are real people doing amazing things and staying fit at all ages.

What an amazing read. I am a frequent reader of running, training and nutritional books and magazines for runners. Running Past Fifty is required reading for any runner, or active adult over the age of 50. It is inspiring and relatable and has brought a renewed joy to my own training as I read the inspirational stories of athletes not only my own age but older. Instead of worrying about the possibility of having to put my running shoes away for good, I am considering strategies for remaining on the roads for decades to come. I couldn't put it down and enjoyed every word describing the fascinasting lives of the athletes interviewed for the book. I hope there is a sequel. Very well written.

Really glad I purchased this book, a fun and informative read from start to finish. The profiles ranged from living legends to people who came to running later, to workhorses with amazing streaks and/or statistics. I appreciated that not all masters agree on every aspect of running later in life. Some swear by stretching, foam rollers, etc, others didn't incorporate those at all. Virtually all agree that cross training and longer rest from injuries or hard efforts are essential. Great stories, valuable advice, and the ending section with advice from more medical oriented professionals was helpful as well. Thanks to Gail for writing this, and people like Amby Burfoot and Tom Perri who helped gather the people to interview.

I read this book as a boy 38 years ago and recently read it with my son, and regretfully the story today is still valid of the suspicions and fears white people have of black people, no matter how charming and helpful black people are. I was hoping this story would be read as historical hindsight, but sadly very little, if anything, has changed. I highly recommended it as a lesson in how and why to give up prejudice and see people as they are and not what unfounded suspicions and fears dictate.

I remember reading this in the sixth grade and absolutely loving this book. It is a very touching story about survival, friendship and faith. I highly recommend this book.

Whew! This book was sooo good! I had to read it with my daughter for school and each night, as we read farther and farther I got more and more involved. I was a blubbering mess at the end. It was a great coming of age story and we highly recommend it.

Loved it as a boy, loved reading it to my kids at bedtime. The plot moves quickly enough for the young ones and the themes are valuable for all ages.

You know there are some sloppy book that get printed in mass "book order" production. Ha, who cares..they're for kids, right?! Well, if it doesn't bother you..the odd feeling pages and the almost typewriter over inked print..then this book will do. Obviously story is a classic for kids! Has mystery, suspense, friendship and golden message...just quality is reflective of the price point. My 6th grader won't mind..he just HAS to read for class!

Excellent book! Used it in my homeschool literature class of 5th and 6h grade students. Enjoyed the pace of the story, as well as the themes running throughout. Takes place during WW II and tells of the friendship of Timothy and Philip, who find themselves stranded after an explosion on the boat carrying them away to safety.

A boy who is raised around people who are racists is shipwrecked at sea with an elderly Jamaican man. He has to confront internally what he was raised to believe as his eyes and ears are gradually opened to the reality. Superficially this is a story of survival at sea and on a deserted island as well as dealing with dangerous storms. That makes for a great adventure. But the real significance is the boy's overcoming prejudice and embracing the old man who teaches him so much. My 8 year old loved it. It opened up frank conversations about the bad old days when black people were treated badly and how people still wrestle with their embedded prejudices.

This book is a "must read" for kids and adults. It illustrates unconscious racial prejudice and the strength of friendship, love and sacrifice. There are few books that I agree are modern classics but this is definitely one. Fit this in among the Warrior Cats nonsense that is questionable in its value as literature. I laughed and cried during this book. It shows how boundaries and difficulties can be overcome with love and loyalty.

As an R&D manager, I've spent over 2 decades of my career talking to customers, analyzing the feedback, and using it to steer product design. I've seen customer-feedback processes work flawlessly an fail miserably. This book lays out a solid set of processes to do it right, and do it efficiently. It covers a lot of methods I've learned are critical, and I found a number of new ideas I'm eager to try. Whether you're new to customer engagement or seasoned, there is something in this book for you. I feel like the word "Lean" in the title is just trying to be trendy. Yes, the book has plenty of good advice throughout on how to be efficient collecting customer input, but 'Lean' ? Lastly, ideas like those in this book are most effective when everyone on the customer team is familiar with them. A few people that don't get the memo can disproportionally dilute the efforts of those that get it. If you're serious about building products that customer excitedly pay money for, get /everyone/ on the customer team to read this book.

Wow! I normally don't write reviews...but when I do it's because I desperately want to encourage others to give a book a chance. Lean Customer Development is an easy sale for Lean Startup lovers--of course we want to go deeper with the concepts. Lean Customer Development certainly does that. I've read many critical reviews, however, about Lean Startup's relevance to specific products not mentioned in the books. If that's you--you MUST read this book!I'm coming from a service industry and this book clarifies many questions that I had about the feasibility of having a "Minimum Viable Product" or MVP. What does that even mean to a lawyer? I've seen many people misconstrue the concept of the MVP and thus, I had my doubts about applying them to my profession. Although she still uses software development as the main focus for applying the principles, Alvarez addresses the flexibility of the MVP in a clear and enlightening fashion in Chapter 7, "What Kind of Minimum Viable Product Should I Build?" Powerful stuff! I feel I understand the concepts well enough to directly apply them to my law firm. Don't get me wrong: Eric's Reis' original work, Lean Startup, is a classic. Ash Maurya's Running Lean, also a part of this Lean series, is also essential reading. Lean Customer Development, however, easily led me to a pathway of applying Lean Startup principles to my situation. Her overall message about searching out, discerning, and applying customer behavior is truly eye-opening. Alvarez truly embodies why Lean Startup works--you give yourself the freedom to tailor a product/service that customers will actually pay to experience. Novel concept. I highly recommend you read this book before making a final decision about Lean Startup!

I work for one of the largest companies in the world. We have tons of ideas, too many. What we didn't have was a way to prove that people wanted the ideas. My boss challenged me to figure that out and through this book ( and a few others in the series like UX for lean) I realized we had all the pieces in the company already, we just needed to tie it all together.As an engineer I also used to take the mindset that only the consumer research folks in the company could talk to customers. Now I try and talk to 3 a week. Ideas are rarely the issue which is the focus of many other books.I came out of too many brainstorming sessions thinking what a waste of time. I replaced those with the alignment meetings mentioned in this book.

it is a great resource to business people of all kinds. I found the idea of the book is good for innovating both startup as well as innovating existing business. It is good in both conceptualization and practical implementation. My wish list for next edition of the book is more case studies of mass consumer products. Thank you Cindy for your contribution. Hope you continue teaching us.

If you're interested in the question and answer process around developing new products, this book collates some useful info into a single place. If you want a good portmanteau for types of mvps, there are many chapters devoted to these.Customer acquisition is not covered so if you're on the quest for customers and prospects, go elsewhere.

The appendix alone is with the price.I would complement this book with:"The Question Book" - Mikael Krigerus and Roman Tschappeler - exploring how to craft questions and a source of inspiration"The Graphic Facilitator's Guide" - Brandy Agerbeck - as a means of visualising your idea, hypotheses, target customer and MVP, especially in the early stages of stating and validating your hypotheses"The Sketchnote Handbook" and "The Sketchnote Handbook" - Mike Rohde - as a better means of capturing customer interviews and insights gained

Is this a good book? The answer is that it depends. If you are a retirement savings novice, then this book is a good starting point. If you have read the commonly available information and done some of your own research, then this book will not add that much value.I am a big fan of "The Truth About Money", read it about 10 years ago and gained a lot of confidence in how to manage money. I don't have the same feelings for this book.A couple of specific issues:* Edelman is referring to increase in account value through Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA) in comparison with stock market performance without making it clear that a substantial amount of the value increase is from new investments. DCA sounds good in theory, but the most important lesson is that an investor should invest the money as soon as possible as the general direction of the stock market is up. In general it makes sense for salaried workers to make an investment for every pay check due to employer matching and the fact that this is when the money is available to be invested. I personally believe that DCA is hyped up.* Edelman is correctly saying that you should invest your money in the vehicle which generates the best return, which is the stock market. He then muddles the whole thing by talking about balancing and buying bonds. It is almost like someone tried to correct Edelman during the review process and that he caved in to pressure from the reviewers.* The section on spending the money in retirement is muddy and ends up with a "it depends" recommendation. Edelman should state that it is impossible to time the peak of any stock market and that investors should stay in stock as long as they can take the risk. If you have a healthy retirement account, then you can take a lot more risk than in you just have the money you need to scrape by. It looks like there is a more in-depth description in chapter 24.* There is another flaw in the sections about how to manage the money that is in the account. Edelman is writing as if old money is different from new money; nothing could be further from the truth. Money in a retirement account is fungible, there is no difference between new money or old money. I believe that this is a significant flaw which leads to confusion.* The section on Roth IRAs is weak, it fails to take into account the difference between marginal tax rate and average tax rate. It is very likely that the average tax rate at retirement will be lower than your marginal tax rate at the time the retirement contribution is made. Hence it makes sense for most people to not choose tha Roth option. There is however one exception; if you are early in your carreer and make a lot less money than you expect in retirement, then it makes sense to put the money into a Roth. As an example, if you can afford making retirement contributions while you are a student, then you are likely in the 0% tax bracket and can make retirement investments tax free.* The discussion section about moving funds from past employer 401(k) to an IRA forgets that there are some 401(k) plans that have good options and low fees. I believe that Edelman's advice is too black-and-white, IRAs are not always better. My recommendation is that each investor looks at the options available and the fees before making a move. The ETF sidebar is shallow, do you really think you should choose an ETF over a mutual fund just because it is cool and you people do it? Take a look at comparable mutual funds and ETF from Vanguard and you will see that they are very comparable.* In Chapter 22 Edelman again miss the important difference between marginal tax bracket and the effective tax rate. Your 401(k) is not worth 40% less if your marginal tax is 40%.Overall the book is a comprehensible collection of good advice, but it brings little new information to the table for people with knowledge. I recommend that the issues listed above are resolved in a re-print.

I love this book because it actually got me to understand retirement planning and get off my butt to do something about it. I'm a smart person but financial planning is very intimidating to me for some reason. This book is very easy to read and has good examples. There are some good general concepts and of course recommends getting a financial advisor for the details. He recommends his own company but doesn't make it sound like the end all be all.I think it is very much recommended reading for the young professional getting started in their career.

Very interesting book, I just started investing recently as I am a first year out of college. Reading this book really opened my eyes to how important investing in your future really is. I suggest reading this book if you need to learn about how to invest, however, I dont think this would be much help to someone who is already aware of what type of investments are available to him/her. In short, this is a book to learn about what you can do with your money, not how to invest it.

As a former teacher of 30 plus years I was always amazed at the total lack of knowledge that young adults had about money/finance.If Ric Edelman's methods were taught to high school age adults - they would be better prepared for life. Very easy reading - funny at times - a must read for people who seriously worry about their future retirement plans. All you need to read this book is common sense (it is laid out very methodically with no finance degree needed to understand)

I loved this book and actually ordered a second one for my daughter who is no where near retirement. In fact, she is a college sophomore. But the examples about the power of compound interest and such illustrate the point about starting to invest early. Ric's advice about not to invest into a nondeductible IRA is understood but I think an alternative would be to invest into a nondeductible IRA (if that is the only account you qualify for) and to cash out at the earliest possible time (without penalties), pay taxes on the gain (total amount minus cost basis) and move proceeds to a taxable amount.

I completely subscribe to Ric's Financial Management strategies. His books are concise, easy to read and give the average mom & pop the information they need to make good, long term financial decisions. If you have not read any of his books, I highly recommend starting with his book "The Truth About Money" - that is my financial planning Bible.
