I've been using biblical commentaries since shortly after The Jerome Biblical Commentary (1968) came out. We were so grateful for that (and later for The New Jerome Biblical Commentary, the Collegeville Biblical Commentary, and for Barkley's NT commentary). But how commentaries have evolved and improved over the years! I would guess that this commentary on Luke is written for the educated layman as well as for layman and clerics deeply interested in Scripture for teaching, personal edification and/or homily preparation.This commentary is engagingly-written and well-illustrated, with very helpful sidebars, which give more information while not overloading the main text. It would be helpful to have more than the one map of what looks life ancient Israel, but the map unfortunately isn't titled. Also, the Glossary is quite short, as are the indexes to the Sidebars and "Pastoral Topics." Sometimes I wonder what the editors of such texts are thinking, or not thinking, in trying to make books more useful to readers.A significant contribution of this commentary is the balance between exegetical and spiritual/theological reflections on the biblical texts. When our parish small group was studying the Gospel of Luke (using the Little Rock Scripture Study) earlier this year, I used this text (when I finally discovered it) to supplement some of the more challenging passages, and found it very helpful, as it includes both textual criticism and spiritual reflection.This commentary will be very useful to homilists, teachers, catechists, and others learning and teaching Scripture. It is part of the multi-volume "Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture."

I love that Catholic Commentaries on Sacred Scripture now include all 4 of the Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). I have only read commentary on a couple of chapters so far, but think Gadenz has done a great job adding clarity to Christ's words by explaining the norms and customers of when Jesus walked the face of the earth. A MUST HAVE along with the others!

This commentary is the best for both the homilist and the the devotional and spiritual use of the lay faithful. The commentary uses a historical approach that does not sacrifice the supernatural origin of God's word, but rather helps to upon up the depth the Luke's Gospel.

I have been waiting for this commentary on Luke for a while now! It was worth the wait! I look forward each day to reading Pablo's work. On a side, I feel like these commentaries that Baker has helped give us will produce incredible fruit in the life of the Church, and bring unity to the One Flock of Christ.

I've been waiting for the Gospel of Luke! Perfect in time for Advent!!! It's like taking a bible class at your pace!

Well written, definitely a hiker's perspective of my favorite park. Since I am a (horse) packer, I wish a little credit had been given to the horses' influence on this park. These days, there is huge criticism of horses on the trails, etc but what people completely fail to realize is that these animals pack in (literally) tons of materials and supplies to maintain these trails for the benefit of all. You won't find a lot of human volunteers to carry 30 lb 8 ft long posts on their backs for 20 miles to a trail maintenance site. Yes, there may be a road apple or two on the trail but get over it and realize not all people are hikers. John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt established these parks for the enjoyment of all Americans with varied interests.

We got this for pre-vacation homework. I wanted a picture flavor of Yosemite and I am very happy. The author has roots to Yosemite in that his great grandfather had a falling out with John Muir. The author is really a very good writer, and that makes it entertaining to read. Good writers bring you places effortlessly.

Parks are certainly one of nature's most expressive creations. I never tire of visiting them. The book really defines the treasures of the park extremely well. I often reread it because the book keeps my memories of the actual visit to the park fresh.

We weren't able to purchase this book at Yosemite during our visit in April. In fact, the park staff told us that it would be rare to find it outside the park. Well, I got lucky and like most things National Geographic, it's a treasure. I'm inspired to make another visit to the park very soon. I'm sure it will ignite your imagination too!

This is a comprehensive book on Yosemite National Park supplemented by fantastic photographs of the park.It is over 200 pages long and done as only National Geographic can.

Settle in and read some well-written stories. The pictures are fantastic as well. we plan to visit Yosemite this year and this will add depth beyond what we'd find in most travel books.

We travel to Yosemite frequently yet learned more through the publication, as well as get photos unable to be gotten as an amateur. A great read for between visits!

I wanted to like this. I am about 60% through it and it is really newspaper recaps of the games. If you want a GREAT book about the 94 Rangers, buy the Rise and Fall of the NY Rangers. It tells about the fighting between Keenan and Neil Smith and all the goofiness Keenan brought to the Rangers that they overcame. This book is a series waste of money.

Math, history, and psychology all wrapped up in an often funny, and consistently well written 220 pages. It definitely falls into the page-turner category, and while there is some math, even the math phobic likely will enjoy it. Ironically, while the book focuses on the impact of randomness in world events and our personal lives, it is very well organized. Yet there is no reason why you shouldn't read the chapters in random order. Sure, there is some carryover from one chapter to the next, but if you read the last chapter first, Â you might find yourself even more enlightened.I found chapter 9 to be particularly enlightening. Randomness is clearly a part of our lives and often is the source of major world events and trends. Most of us know this, Â but as the author points out, we try to organize random events so that they make sense and point to a direction. He uses examples of the stock market and the success/failure of new movies and books. There are countless people making a nice living trying to convince us that they see a pattern when in fact there is none. There are many more "hmmph, I didn't know that" points in the book, but If this is your only learning, Â it is a worthwhile use of your time and money.

The book is an historical account of the development of two branchs of mathematics: probabilities and statistics. It is very comprehensive, covering a wide range of the subject in details. However, it is not a technical book. The author try to address explain the mathematics using simple examples in a narrative form. Being an engineer, I would like to say that probabilities and statistics are not easy subjects. As the author points throughout the book, part of the difficult is due to the fact that both sciences usually produce results that are very counterintuitive. The type of conclusions that clash directly to our expectations. The author did its best to try to address such complexity. But, it still is a difficult book. So, I recommend reading it with time and patience. But, at the end, it is a worth reading, in particular for anyone interested in history of science.

Although it’s seemingly impossible to discuss this book without drawing parallels to Fooled By Randomness, these books provide a great compliment to each other. This book in particular differs in its scope, traversing many areas outside of finance. It also speaks more directly to the reader, explaining the mathematics of probability by breaking down the mathematics (in contrast to Taleb who speaks more through analogies and metaphors).The writer explains concepts clearly, and explores the role (and misunderstandings of) probably in Hollywood, the board room, the courts, and why the Greek's, despite their immense mathematical contributions had no understanding – and a great skepticism of – probability.This book contains just the right balance of history, philosophy, mathematics, popular culture (Monty Hall problem, etc), and it’s accessible to all. If you’re on the fence about it, look at the Table of Contents for some inspiration.

Mlodinow explains the impact of randomness for the most wealthy to the most impoverished, and reminds us of our biases towards the two. This book expands on the principle of heuristics, and advises us to appreciate the randomness that affects us positively rather than negatively. The Drunkard's Walk meshes with our knowledge of Skinner’s pigeons and rats by explaining how our predictable mental processes can so easily fail us.Leonard Mlodinow explores the predictability of randomness and its impact on the movie industry, college football, and so much more. Success operates on a continuum and regression towards the mean calls for periods of both extreme failure and success. Mlodinow tells us that our inability to understand this continuum results in college coaches fired for less successful seasons and famous movie producers given the boot when their good luck suddenly runs dry. It was discovered later on that first-in-commands have little to do with the success of their respective fields. Our biases and misconceptions can rule our lives unless we account for them. This book address questions like: how can something so obvious be wrong? Mlodinow explains how our misinterpretation of probabilities have greatly tainted our legal system. Simple mathematical mistakes are “enough to sober up anyone drunk on feelings of cultural superiority”. These mistakes are enough to bring ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ back into question. OJ Simpson’s trial and the Pearl Harbor attacks are re-calculated to show how previous mistakes in logic can seem so obvious in reverse. The clever selection of gripping anecdotes will keep me coming back to this book. Mlodinow proves that it’s possible to win the lottery if we gather enough people together to outsmart the system. He uncovers why the most wealthy people in the world are no smarter than you and me, and he does it with great wit and humor. Overall, he urges us to judge each other by our qualities, and not the results we obtain. This book opened my eyes to the randomness working in my life and all around me. Are my most successful moments pure serendipity? Mlodinow succeeds in taking the ancient logic of philosophers and basic knowledge in mathematics and uses it to disprove most everything I trusted to be grounded in strong rationale. From social physics to prosecutor's fallacy, it’s hard to see anything the way I used to.

Mark M. He is now the President and CEO of the Intelligence & Security Academy, an education and consulting firm. Dr. Lowenthal received his BA from Brooklyn College and his PhD in history from Harvard University. I’ve known about W.E.B. Griffin’s USMC novel series for a long time, but I was leery of buying the series since I thought it might be too similar to a “dime novel” or a “formula story” series, i.e., basically the same storyline told over and over again with minor changes.“Semper Fi” came up on my Amazon Kindle recommendation at $1.99. At that price, I decided to give it a try and I’m glad that I did. “Semper Fi” kept me entranced from page one to the end. When I wasn’t reading the book, I was thinking and remembering in vivid detail about what I had just read. Very few books have done this to me.My father served in WW2. I remember looking at some of his military papers and seeing “NMI”. I thought my father was the exception at not having a middle name. After reading “Semper Fi”, not have a middle name wasn’t that unusual during that time period.If you’re interested in military history and WW2, I highly recommend “Semper Fi.” Although the book spans a few years before the attack on Pearl Harbor and a few days after the attack, if you served in the military (not just USMC), you’ll find yourself having empathy with the major characters since some of the same experiences are universal to military service.

This is a terrific book about the US Marine Corps prior to Pearl Harbor. The protagonist is a US Marine corporal stationed in Shanghai, China. He is an exceptional man in a humble position. The characterizations in this novel are first-rate and the storyline moves at a deliberate and fast pace serving to make this novel a true page-turner.Griffin plainly has a very solid understanding of life in the USMC, and this imparts an unmistakable aura of authenticity to the novel. And he manages to create many memorable characters who obviously will populate the many sequels. This is first-rate military fiction that no reader who likes the genre will want to miss. RJB.

I love these books that are not co-authored by someone else. Griffin is always an amazing writer and I come back to these and the Brotherhood of War series like I am seeing old friends once again. I have hard it in hard cover; paperback and now Kindle because you cannot take the "books" everywhere with you. The characters are well done as are the various story lines. I just wish they weren't so expensive...but what can you do?

The story line is very interesting. WEB Griffin has his own style of writing and sometimes tends to repeat information unnecessarily, but overall the books are interesting. BUT, that being said, these are old books...Semper Fi was written in the late 1980's...but they still ask, on average, at least $9.99 for each book(e-books, not hard copies). And there are no package deals to buy the series at a discount. I bought the first book "on sale" and the second one was a "deal" at $7.99...but although I did enjoy the first few books I won't spend $10 a book to finish the series. Hopefully they will have them available as e-books through my local library. I would bet they would sell many more copies if they were at $4.99 per or if there was an opportunity to buy them in bundles at a good discount like the Robert Parker books are. Just my thoughts...

Remember Those Book Reports From Your School Days....they served a purpose - they prepared you to read the collected works of W.,E.B. Griffin."The Corps" series follows a specific group of characters through the pre-war days leading up to the entry of the United States into World War II; through the War in the Pacific; and beyond into the conflict on the Korean Peninsula. Get a notebook and keep track of the characters that appear in "Semper Fi"; many reappear throughout "The Corps" series - a few notes along the way will keep you from getting lost as you progress through each of the books in the series - this is crucial if you do not plan to read each book in order one right after the other.In "Semper Fi" you are introduced to Ken McCoy; Fleming Pickering; his son Malcolm, and Edward Banning. These are the principal characters to get to know early on. It is largely through these four characters that the entire series unfolds.Having read through this series twice now, I highly recommend it as both good reading and an opportunity to combine good fiction with historical fact (hint: keep your notebook, tablet, smartphone, or other internet-accessible device handy - you will find yourself "Google-ing" often).Enjoy "Semper Fi" and the entire "Corps" series, but plan to lose some sleep-time; each book is a page-turner!

Over 20 years this is the 3rd time reading this series. If the reader is interested in a great mix of history, fiction, and the inner workings/culture of a military service, this would be a fantastic read. It is not necessary to read the series in order but doing so adds some to the experience.

I first read this book probably 25 years ago and nostalgia hit me and I picked it up again. My reading habits have matured quite a lot in that time and I’m sorry to say I didn’t have the experience I expected. The banter between characters is inappropriate at best and downright creepy at worst. Still I never read this series all the way through and that’s my goal. I still love reading about WW2 as well as historical fiction.

I OWN THE ENTIRE SERIES IN THE ORIGINAL HARDCOVER VERSION AS WELL AS THE FIRST PAPERBACK VERSION {ALONG WITH GRIFFIN'S OTHER OSS/ESPIONAGE AND POLICE SERIES} ...THIS CORPS SERIES, IS RIGHT ON THE MARK...IF YOUR LIKE ME, A FORMER 'JARHEAD', A CORPS HISTORY BUFF, ENJOY WELL WRITTEN HISTORICAL FICTION STORIES, YOU SHOULD GET ALL HIS WORKS.
