Review

“There are many other short, illustrated, cartoony books about the Gold Rush for the elementary age range, but this one manages to combine pathos and humor, and to communicate much with an engaging and brief text, making it a first-choice introduction to the subject.” ―The Horn Book Magazine“The inventive page compositions and scratchy watercolor cartoon figures carry small, telling dramas (the tiny grin that punctuates a successful panner's face is priceless), and sweeping western landscapes come into full relief, bringing not only visual context but a sense of playfulness to the book. A solid look at an eventful period in American history.” ―Booklist“The book presents a thorough description of a unique period in American history, illustrated in a manner to attract younger readers.” ―School Library Journal“The harmony of narration, wry watercolor pictures, and quotes from the miners themselves nonetheless makes this an engaging introduction for children who are just beginning to explore historical accounts beyond their social studies textbooks.” ―BCCB“This well-researched account details how several things originated from the country's gold fever--such as the idiom 'pans out,' Levi Strauss jeans, and the dramatic expansion of the city of San Francisco.” ―Publishers Weekly

"Gold! Gold from the American River!"Written & illustrated by Don Brown. . .Don Brown is one of my major kid's-lit heroes, due to his large catalog of historically-oriented picturebooks, including numerous biographies as well as the "Actual Times" series, of which this book is a part. "Gold! Gold!" tells the story of the California Gold Rush of 1849-52 in plain, straightforward, pleasantly engaging prose. The narrative conveys the excitement of the gold boom and the way in which it transformed Northern California from a sleepy backwater into a thriving financial hub, giving birth to the modern state of today. Brown also skillfully weaves in alternative stories, of the hardships pioneers endured coming out West, as well as the discrimination faced by Native Americans, Chinese laborers and women in the boom economy of the era... I picked this book up as an additional resource for a grade-school unit on California history and it was well-received and very informative. Recommended! Gold! Gold From the American River! is a great book introducing young readers to the California Gold Rush of 1849. We learn about how gold was discovered, the challenges and hazards of traveling to California by land or sea, techniques of gold mining, difficulties and disappointments with gold mining, the unfortunate fate of American Indians in California, and entrepreneurs such as Philip Armour and Levi Strauss. Author Don Brown uses primary sources in the narrative and supplements the text with vivid watercolors. The book emphasizes that the merchants profited the most from the Gold Rush. Though the book is designed more for young readers, adults will find this volume to be a great overview about one of the largest mass migrations in history.

After James Marshall discovered gold in the runoff ditch of John Sutter's sawmill on the American River early in 1848, the exciting news spread quickly. Within the next six years, some three hundred thousand people had migrated to California in hopes of striking it rich. Some of those migrants did indeed get lucky and make a fortune from the gold they found, but most miners worked under extremely difficult conditions only to come up empty-handed.Native Americans experienced the most hardship as they suffered from new illnesses carried by the miners, expulsion from their land, and outright killings. International migrants, especially those from China, also faced hostility and discrimination that included having to pay a monthly foreign miners tax. In direct contrast, enterprising women and men who sold goods and services to the miners did quite well financially. Some of these entrepreneurs created businesses that have continued to this day, including Levi Strauss's clothing company and Philip Armour's meatpacking firm. With its interesting content and lively pace, this historical narrative provides young learners with a helpful overview of some of the key events in America's gold rush. The book, which is well-researched and does a good job in keeping the reader's attention, can provide a useful resource for talking with children about economic concepts that include natural resources, discrimination, and entrepreneurship.
