Review

"Those who want to see the day-to-day lives of human beings in the crisis regions of the Middle East - lives that don't make the news - should read Navid Kermani's sensitive reporting. Reports you won't soon forget."Deutschland-Radio"Kermani's well-researched and sensitive book reveals how violence is born. It also reminds us that far away victims and perpetrators have one thing in common: they're human beings, just like us."Süddeutsche Zeitung"Intense, colourful, emotional, subjective."Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung"Among the most thoughtful intellectual voices in Germany today."The New York Review of Books"After reading this book, one puts it down glad to have been both touched and taught"Neue Zürcher Zeitung am Sonntag “Kermani’s style is nuanced and kindly, poetic and philosophical, he zooms in and out of perspectives like a novelist and is drawn to irresolvable tensions like a conceptual artist... State of Emergency is a humane and timely reminder that there is no one Islam, no one set of Islamic views, values and beliefs, just as there is no one Western creed.”Geographical

Navid Kermani is a German-born writer and reporter of Iranian heritage. His parents fled Iran during the 1960s. All of these essays have been previously published in German news magazines and newspapers and span a time frame from 2007 to 2014 and covers India, Kashmir, Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Lampedusa, an island off the Italian coast where refugees from Tunesia are processsed.Kermani is very detailed in his reporting. No matter from where he reports, he details the environment, explains the political history and interviews the locals and asks them about their opinions. There are several overlying themes here: the intolerance of religion and the apathy of nations to help the human suffering. In his previously-translated work by Polity, "Upheaval: The Refugee Trek through Europe" the same style of reporting and themes are addressed. The first essays cover various regions of India. Here one senses that one corrupt agency is the Indian army, using force and intimidation to get cooperation from the local people. Kermani does not paint a good image of the Indian soldiers. Locals avoid contact with them as much as possible.Of interest to American readers will be the essays on Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. It's not just a religious war between the faiths, but also a war of corruption, and in Afghanistan, the smuggling of drugs even among powerful politicians. The country is contrasted between 2006 and 2011, and one sees that nothing has changed, only the players. The reporting is grim and not sugar-coated and one has to ask "Why where the Americans (and British) here?" That same question can be asked about Iraq and Syria, which both struggled with Islamists from ISIS, whose leaders blame the West for the torture. While the essays are now dated, many of the struggles persist. There are still refugees fleeing north Africa, there are still Islamists controlling ideology in the Middle East, and there are still western countries that know what is going on, but do nothing about it. This is the effect Kermani wants to have on his readers, and the tactic succeeds.

Navid Kermani is an award winning writer and scholar who has visited war torn countries in Asia, the Near East and Middle East and has written a memoir or travelogue of his experiences. In this book he shares his impressions and insights of living among people who had faced hardships, war, death, torture, and suffering on a vast scale, sadly some of them are still living amidst such conditions. The unique nature of many of the countries he visited include religions with which most of us are unfamiliar, such as Hindu and Muslim in Kashmir, India and Muslim throughout most of the other countries. Yet what stands out most in his stories and encounters is the essential nature of humanity that despite their struggles to survive on a day to day basis most people remain connected with life and have hopes, dreams and aspirations and continue living working toward a better future. Often, the author will include a background of historical or political significance which changed the region to make it vulnerable or important on the world stage. Whatever region the author visited in his writing he brought forth unique insights which provide a larger picture to ponder regarding the impact it has on people's lives in that country and outward politically on a global scale. The author visited Egypt, Kashmir, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Palestine and Lampedusa an island which is part of Sicily and where many refugees from Africa are processed. Needless to say, this book is detailed and complex but worth tackling to read and understand remote parts of the world from where much of the suffering of humanity arises. If Western countries fail to relieve the hardships and difficulties that war and deprivation has caused suffering human beings in certain countries in this part of the world, there may be future unforgiving consequences that will arise which will deeply affect us all.
