In 2011 Cavin Balaster sustained a severe traumatic brain injury that left him comatose with less than a 10% chance of ever regaining consciousness beyond a persistent vegetative state. I cannot overstate how grateful I am to Cavin for having published this book (and launched his podcast) before I needed it. I am 3.5 months out from a concussion and struggling to recover that final 25% or so of my brain and function. I fully believe that diet and lifestyle can help heal many of our ills, and this book gives me a path forward right now. Gavin's story is inspiring, and his book is well-researched and clearly written. I am a food geek and so innately understand a lot of his advice -- I'm not intimidated by the thought of drastically changing my diet because I know well how to shop and cook for myself -- but I so appreciate how his gentle approach and stories about his own struggles with a new diet might help people who would find it all daunting. I am in week 2 of following his advice (and also Dr. Titus Chiu's BrainSave plan). It's not an instantaneous miracle cure, but I do feel better in several ways that just might be related to this diet.

My husband and I (Ryan Cedermark) are so impressed with the research Cavin did when writing this book. If you, a family member or friend has suffered a TBI, concussion or are just looking to be nicer to your brain, then we highly recommend this book! Your brain is only as good as the body's internal environment and Cavin has done an amazing job on providing the information needed to obtain such!

I have had brain issues for many years. I purchased the Kindle version. I like the idea of reading Cavins book because he has lived through terrible brain injury and has come back victorious.

Cavin's story is so inspirational and moving. As a practicing Functional Neurologist that specializes in Post-Concussion Syndrome and having suffered multiple head injuries myself, the information that Cavin has put together based on his experiences is totally spot on.I love seeing such cutting-edge information on brain health out there in the world. I appreciate the gist of this book but wish it didn't focus exclusively on schooling. While "survival" for gifted kids may refer mainly to thriving in a school that doesn't differentiate curriculum or accommodate well, their needs and struggles carry over into family interactions and other areas of life, too. My son is homeschooled, and the book's examples don't translate especially well to his experience.

This is an excellent resource for bright and gifted children. The author indicates that it is for ages 10 and under, and I would suggest using it with a child as soon as the child is old enough to comprehend the issues even is he/she cannot yet read it all.The book has excellent tips and questions for the child to think about and is a great starter for conversations between the parent and child. As an educator, I think this book would be a great classroom reader to use in a small group with talented/bright/gifted kids so that they can have the conversations with each otherThe book also talks about how kids can manage the teasing from others, the lack of understanding from teachers and adults, and in general their own self worth.

This book uses accessible language for my six-year-old and is accurate as to his feelings as a kindergartner who's in the gifted program. He enjoyed the examples from other kids and that these examples included the child's age. The wide range of opinions seemed to resonate with him. As his mother, I also found it helpful to get a better handle on what bothers most kids about this and as a discussion tool with him. We used it to get specific about what he doesn't like and what he thinks is cool.

I pre-read this before letting my 6.5 yr old read it. I am glad I did because I'm not going to let him read it for now. It seems to talk a lot about getting picked on for being smart/gifted and that currently isn't really an issue for my son so much of the book didn't really apply to him.

When you don't know what to do with your gifted kids, it's time to turn to this book. Even it's not the best I've found, it's a great starting point, and provides you with some good ideas on how to handle and encourage your talented kids.

My 7-year old son has known he was different from other children for years. He knew his mind worked differently, that he was interested in different things and that he didn't really relate to kids his age. Shortly after he took the WISC and he was "identified" as a "gifted" child my husband and I pre-read this book. We determined that it was not only appropriate but necessary for our child to read it, too. He read it in one sitting and we watched as his demeanor changed chapter by chapter. He was excited! He FINALLY found something he related to, something that made it all make sense to him. After he was done reading he stood straighter and his confidence multiplied. It wasn't important that he was "gifted"; it was important that he wasn't alone. At 8-years old, he now takes fierce pride in who he is and he now knows that his differences are a blessing to him.

This is a guide for 10yrs old and under. There isnt really much for kids who are 6yrs old, when they first pick up on the fact that they are different. My little guy listened very carefully and would jump up and say, "HEY, I am like that!" and very often. We are working our way through the book together at bedtime story time and it is helping us both find comfort in his world. I wish there had been a book like this when I was growing up! I wish I could get a copy to every teacher!

I used this as an opening piece to a new gifted program for kids who had never been exposed to the term or the world of gifted. This made sense to them, they felt more confident entering the program and inspired them to get started. It's easy to read, broken down into familiar categories and useful for children from grade 1 up to 7th grade.

Mary Norris established herself as a skillful writer and someone who is good company on the page in her previous book. This one is both more personal and less personal - plenty of personal stories but also a lot about Greek and Greece and learning both. If you're familiar with ancient or modern Greek you'll enjoy listening to someone tell stories about learning them and about how they evolved (though she seems to think that the sole predecessor of the Greek alphabet was the Phoenician alphabet which is not quite so). If you're not, prepare to learn. Norris wears her learning lightly, and takes us along on a variety of adventures including some that are, to use a little-used term but an accurate one, ribald.Norris also does not wear out her welcome or get too cute. She's fun to listen to, and makes Greece (or at least the version available to travelers) come alive. You don't have to familiar with the Greek language or alphabet to follow along, though it helps.No great issues here, and no universal wisdom dispensed, thank goodness. Just an enjoyable few hours with a flexible and well-stocked mind who succeeds in drawing us into her interests.

Greek to Me: Adventures of the Comma Queen is aptly subtitled. This book is indeed about Mary Norris' adventures, and they make for a pleasant read. Nothing so arduous as hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, for example, or as heartrending as the childhood of a girl being homeschooled by Mormon survivalists. Norris just astounds us by falling in love with the Greek language and, naturally, all things Greek, particularly the classics. She's very off the cuff and light-hearted, and far from vain about her obsession. "Nouns come first: naming things. Then verbs: going places and doing things. Soon enough you have to separate your verbs into tenses, and that's when it gets complicated and I move along to another language." So true!I felt a special link to her book because I too fell in love with Greek mythology, only at a much earlier age. She explicated a reason for our shared obsession. "Professor Zeitlin's class had woken me to the fact that I could have other models: be a bitch, be a huntress, be an Amazon, be a maenad... Mythology taught me that I didn't have to limit myself to virgin, bride, and mother."She was a copy editor for The New Yorker for many years and touches upon those experiences (she finagled The New Yorker to pay for her Ancient Greek classes on the grounds that they made her a better copy editor), but she writes about those experiences elsewhere. She describes coworkers, fellow students, professors and Greek sailors who try to very cheerfully, her stories self deprecating and funny. She is the sort of person you would want to have lunch with. Reading her book comes second best.So why am I giving her book four stars instead of five? Despite the fact that I love Greek mythology and etymology as much as she, I could have wished that her tale had a bit more arc to it, something that carried one along from page to page.

I was eagerly waiting for Mary Norris' book on "all things Greek," being a lover of all things Greek myself and always on the lookout for memoirs about the country. The memoir starts out by explaining how Norris developed an interest in studying the Greek language and the support she received from her employers at the New Yorker, and then dives into the Greek language (ancient and modern), the alphabet, mythology, and actually traveling in Greece. Interspersed without are some glimpses into Norris' family and personal life, combined with witty remarks.I think the reader will be best served going into this if they expect the format to be like a friend conveying their experiences to them, rather than a structured, very descriptive memoir. That's not to say that the memoir is unstructured, but it's more free-flowing than some others. Additionally, the memoir really does focus on a lot of things Greek - some chapters focus on the language and learning it, some focus on Greek history and mythology, and then portions of it focus on traveling through Greece. While Norris does a great job of touching on all of these areas and providing details around them, the memoir really isn't a deep dive into any of these areas. To do that would have made for a much longer book.The one thing I do wish there were more of in the memoir are the experiences the author had while traveling throughout Greece. The ones she does have are amazing and did make me feel like I was back in Greece. She also has some hilarious experiences in the country that I loved reading about (no spoilers here, but the scene at the beach at the end of the book is really funny). It could also be hard to track when she was in Greece and for what purpose.Overall, recommended. Norris has a great style of writing that makes you feel like she's a friend.
