Mark Batterson’s “In a Pit With A Lion On a Snowy Day” is a challenging and encouraging book based on the story of Benaiah in the Old Testament. There is very little in the bible about Benaiah. We know that eventually he became one of David’s bodyguards and at some point was leader of part of David’s army. We also know that all of that happened after one snowy day, he chased a lion into a pit and killed it. Batterson uses that brief story as his encouragement to Christians to be “lion chasers”. He proposes in this book a statement that will stick with me for quite some time: “What if the life you want, and the life God wants for you, is hiding right now in your biggest problem, your worst failure?”This is the second book that I’ve read by Batterson. And while I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as “IF”, this is still very much a book worth reading. Batterson has the gift of encouragement and that gift is felt as he challenges the reader to be completely unafraid to not only take on the seemingly impossible challenges this life sometimes throws at us…..but to also change the way we see those challenges. Batterson suggests that in each of life’s most difficult moments, is an opportunity for God to work in our situation for our good and His glory.As with the other Batterson book I read, this one is full of brilliant quotes and bulletin board material. I’d keep the highlighter ready. You’re going to want to take notes.Well done.

I believe this book was a God send in my life. As I was reading it I realized that the dreams of doing something even bigger than I could imagine for the kingdom of God and pursuing after personal dreams is something that God has put in me and that I should go after. I had almost got to the point where I believed I was not supposed to try to do anything new. Be satisfied with being on a level plane. Not moving forward. Feeling almost guilty for having BIG Dreams. That's what the enemy would all of us to believe. Reading this book has renewed a passion in me to go for the God given dreams. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to start something or be apart of something beyond their biggest dreams and imagination. Thanks Mark Batterson for allowing God to use you in writing this encouraging book.

There are times in life when you hear about a book, or it comes across your path, and the timing is just RIGHT. "In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day" crossed my path at just that time. Mark Batterson takes you down a path of facing fear, looking at what playing "small" creates-or doesn't create and how to live to our fullest "God given talents". As that statement reads, God has given each of us talents and if we do not explore what they are, and utilize all He has given us, we are not truly living up to what we have been created for. And don't miss "Chase the Lion" which is Mark's continuation of Snow Day.

This is one of my all time favorite books - this is a second copy because I highly recommended it to someone else, loaned it to them and then didn't get it back! It's a must-have on my library shelf and I revisit it frequently. I love a book with grit - and this book not only has grit - but makes you wanna reach in there and pull out some grit in your life as well!

Batterson does a great job of bringing a very short bible event into real world theology. I encourage anyone that's settled into a rut to take a few hours to read this book. The last two chapters have no substance and were more like an introduction to the author's ministry and its successes. The remaining chapters will prepare you to be on the lookout for your own lion to chase.

Good book, but I had read many of his other books before and I feel like the same stories get repeated often. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Mark Batterson fan! But, between this one, Circle Maker (all of them), and Chase the Lion, I keep reading the same stories in a different way.

About the Author

John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929). After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938). Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939. Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941) and a serious student of marine biology with Sea of Cortez (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette The Moon is Down (1942).Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1948), another experimental drama, Burning Bright(1950), and The Log from the Sea of Cortez (1951) preceded publication of the monumental East of Eden (1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history. The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books include Sweet Thursday (1954), The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication (1957), Once There Was a War (1958), The Winter of Our Discontent (1961),Travels with Charley in Search of America (1962), America and Americans (1966), and the posthumously published Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters (1969), Viva Zapata!(1975), The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights (1976), and Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath (1989). Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.

In 1940, the writer John Steinbeck and his biologist friend Ed Ricketts made a scientific tour of Mexico's Sea of Cortez/Gulf of California in a repurposed sardine fishing boat. The goal of the voyage was to collect marine samples and to better understand the tidal ecology of the area. For Steinbeck, the voyage was a good excuse to write the extended travelogue that is "the Log from the Sea of Cortez."This book won't be for everyone. The reader must be patient with the author, who mixes science and travel story and philosophy at his own pace. The travelogue portions are a time capsule of often wry observations of Baja California as it was at the time. Chapter 14 contains Steinbeck's and likely Ricketts' thoughts on a universe that is, rather than ought to be. An extended appendix contains Steinbeck's moving requiem for his longtime friend, who inspired several characters in Steinbeck's novels over the years. Recommended to Steinbeck's fans, who may find his non-fiction not so far removed from his fiction.

In the nineties was I was in a remote area West of Puerto Penasco and the tide was in. Right off the beach the water was alive and solid with color. There were uncountable fish, small crabs and plants. So Steinbeck's descriptions were very correct and I was totally excited to find that the book I had read was so accurate. I have been to the Sea of Cortez many many times and always have a copy of the book with me. That visit to the tidal flat caused me to go back to Penasco that same day and I bought a complete snorkeling outfit. I also ended up booking a trip on a boat the next day and on my first dive found that the force of the tide and my swimming skills were "divergent". Despite having read it many times its still a good read, but what can make it more interesting is to read the book from the crew, in which they describe the difficulties with Steinbeck's wife and give a humorous angle on the whole trip as well. For those who like the book, take a trip to Mexico and go to more remote areas with a truck, a tent, cold beer and drinking water (this is a real desert). You will be stunned at the life in this Sea. You will also be surprised at how many smaller settlements will have a federal official-The Captain of the Port. Don't mess with him. He can take your boat away.

A great read (except for the "Easter Sunday sermon" chapter which reminds me of listening to someone off his meds--written by Ed Ricketts, not Steinbeck). I recommend reading "The Pearl" along with this. Good insight into the culture of Baja California with its abundant sea life. Steinbeck wrote that his party told the natives they were "collecting curios" rather than biological specimens for study because they could accept that. A hunt for bighorn sheep "borrego" with locals yields only bighorn sheep droppings. Later, Steinbeck has a single borrego dropping mounted in a frame on his wall as a hunting trophy. A recurring observation that in nature "...over-armor, and/or over-ornamentation are symptoms of extinction..." and "...the removal of obstacles automatically atrophies a survival drive..." and "...The lean and hungry grow strong..." reflects Steinbeck's theories of dominance. Steinbeck's observation of the crew of the Western Flyer vessel which conveys he and Ed Ricketts through the Sea of Cortez includes navigation precision of Tony the captain. "...Tony loves the truth, and the course is the truth. If the helmsman is off-course he is telling a lie to Tony..."

The following is a letter I received from a friend, away on a research cruise.Before her expedition embarked, I gave to her my treasured copy of this book,and this is what she had to say:"Day 14 at Sea."After spending a good week of troubleshooting, rebuilding arrays,breaking them, re-fixing them, dealing with conflicting egos(including my own), switching wires, and dealing with theunfamiliarity of sea-sickness (due in two parts to my cold and themagnificent roll of this ship), I have finally finished Sea of Cortez.While it's fresh in my mind, I thought I'd jot down my thoughts tosend your way. This is going to be more of a letter than a note, asthe mood has struck me. Sans cigarette, however. I do not favor theidea of clinging to my laptop on deck, protecting it from theelements."Also, holy crap, has it really only been two weeks?"SUCH a romantic story, from start to appendix. This idea that evenpost Depression Era people could scrap together enough savings toafford such a lavish, albeit business, adventure. I think of themodern day scramble to get grants, itemized so precisely, spent onlyon what you thought you may need six month prior. I far prefer thenotion of pooling together funds until one can afford to hire or buythe required equipment, sketching out the necessities and desiredgoods as you go. I took to reading this book during my breaks up onthe flying bridge, wind and sea around me. Reading this book at seawas a good idea, though I was frequently interrupted by visualobservers passing by and asking me what part I was up to. Many ofthem harbored a great fondness for the book."The passage about the futility of hope and how it weakens us as aspecies set the whole tone of the book for me. We have hope, andtherefore we are disillusioned. I imaged the different outlook onlife high school graduates may have if that paragraph was recited tothem at graduation, instead of the usual spiel about how special theyall are. It shouldn't be read in a negative way, as that's not howit's written. But in a matter-of-fact way, that this is an obstaclein life which one must acknowledge if they are going to be satisfiedwith whatever the end up setting their minds to."The descriptions of the towns along the peninsula made me sore fortravel. Though I am certainly on a current adventure, I love travelingto new places and walking around, getting a feel for the people (aswell as their beer and coffee). This book, however, also sets youback in time to villages that likely do not exist in the same manneranymore. They mention how either La Paz or Loreto was in the middleof constructing a hotel-like building that would bring floods ofweekenders from LA and elsewhere, and how sick that makes them. Howsick would they be now with the modern "Floridaization" of sea sideMexico. I'd love to take a road trip down, compare and contrast theirexperience (albeit through the lens of stylized storytelling) with thecurrent reality (of course through my own lens, as that's the onlyreality I can know)."The bit about the Japanese shrimping fleet broke my heart a bit,because the authors were spot on. The Gulf of California fishingindustry is a shell of what it could have been mostly thanks to gillnetting and those huge bottom trawlers that destroyed everything intheir path. The fact that this was evident 60 years ago to people ofan academic mind and no protective actions were taken gives me littlefaith in our ability to save anything now. The Vaquita, the smallestporpoise in the world, which lives exclusively in the northern regionof the Gulf, is quickly being exterminated by a barely profitable gillnetting industry. The extinction of a species can be avoided if peoplejust fished a different way. There is such a wall against doingthings the right way rather than the first way we happened to stumbleupon. I have heard fisherman say "God will always make sure there isenough fish in the sea." *facepalm* Because the bible never saysanything about an angry and vengeful god testing his people to livewithin their means."Speaking of God, I enjoy the idea of such an entity being expressed asa mathematical symbol for an expanding universe. As a non-believer,that notion suits me."What also broke my heart is the amount of animals they killed. Notjust the ones they took (and as they often repeated 'a great many ofthem'), some they just mortally wounded. Then they head out on ahunting trip and repeat frequently how they don't like killing things,they only do it when necessary. People used to have such a causalattitude towards killing things, like the cats which may or may nothave been pets. I don't have a strong objection to killing for thesake of the animal. As we have previously discussed, once its dead itdoesn't know the difference. Life is only as precious as the pedestalwe place it on. But that poor shark they left to suffocate on theirdeck, that's a horrible death. I also understand that most for mostpeople, to properly study biology you have to sacrifice the animal youwork with. That isn't a reality for me. Not because I don't have thestomach for it, but because that isn't the nature of my work. But whenI was killing fish on a regular basis, you at least try to only killthe ones you need, rather than killing as many samples as possible tothe point of not having enough collection jars to hold them. It'ssuperfluous. If something can live, let it live. If the purpose oftheir expedition was to go tide pooling, why did they need to harpoona great manta ray? Mantas don't make a regular practice of checkingout tide pools, as far as I am aware."It's an older way of thinking. An older methodology. One of thereasons the Ivory-billed Woodpecker went extinct was becausenaturalists found out they were disappearing, and then promptly wentout and killed as many as possible to preserve specimens. I don'tthink we, the biological community, are that out of touch now. Or atleast, I hope not."There were some other notes about the old-fashion-ness of this story,but I fear this letter is too long, and I don't want to bore you. Allof these thoughts are just at the front of my mind, and the more Itype the more I remember. I'll end with Steinbeck's attempt to "laythe ghost" of Ed Ricketts, which is just as sweet as you had promised.His snapshot of the man he knew, as beautiful as it was, does not ridhim from the loss of his late friend. This was a bittersweet momentfor me, as it rang true for my own losses. Memories of them stilltingle with every day occurrences, mostly unexpected. Reading thatSteinbeck still carried the ghost of Ed Ricketts brought both comfortand sadness."I suppose it'll always be confusing. So I will leave it for now."I hope all is well with you. :)"x x"

This book is a great read. My special needs 11 year old son, really enjoyed reading it and he has a better understanding of who Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is. The book is very informative. I just ordered him the Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and Einstein book. I will be ordering more from this series as well.

Excellent series of books we plan on trying to buy as many of this collection as possible. It is perfect for children readers who are looking to learn about historical people, places or events. It breaks it down in an informative but digestible amount for the young reader.

Very informative and interesting even to the youngest grade-schoolers. This book taught a 1st grader about MLK Jr., and gave him an good understanding about this part of history. I found it very interesting to read as well as an adult. I'd like to get more of these books in the future.

Secret Origins CHAPTER 1 The evil King of All Stories held his enormous eraser to Bethany’s head as she tried to escape. “It’s too late, heroes!” the king told Owen, Kiel, and Charm. “There’s nothing you can do! Now I’ll erase the parts of Bethany’s life story that make her a good person, thereby turning her into my evil minion. Then, together, we’ll invade the nonfictional world and rule everything!” “Let her go!” Owen shouted. “Or you won’t like what comes next.” The evil King of All Stories sneered. “You? The nonfictional hero who’s saved the fictional world more times than I can count? You have no power here, boy.” “Don’t I?” Owen took out paper and a pencil and began writing. The King of All Stories drops his eraser. The king’s eraser immediately dropped out of his hand. “What?” the king shouted in amazement. “But how?” “Through the power of words!” Owen shouted. “Books are magical, and so is writing!” He wrote something else on the paper. The King of All Stories lets Bethany go, then trips on his own feet. The king let go of Bethany, then spectacularly wiped out on his next step, doing a front flip before landing hard on his back. The Crown of Stories fell off his head and rolled a few feet away. The Crown of Stories appears on Owen’s head, Owen wrote. Immediately, the crown disappeared from the ground, then reappeared on Owen’s head. It was exactly the right size, as if it were made for him all along. “No!” the former king shouted from the ground. “You can’t do this to me. This is all I had!” “Not true,” Owen said, turning to his former archenemy. “This isn’t you, Your Majesty. You’re not meant to be evil. Someone’s rewritten your story, just as you tried to do for Bethany.” “I’m not?” the former king said. “Then what was I meant to be?” “A father,” Owen said quietly, then wrote something on his paper. The former King of All Stories turns back into his real self. Instantly a bright light filled the room, then spread out over the entire Kingdom of Stories, blinding anyone who happened to be looking at the castle at that moment. The light enveloped the former king, raising him into the air in a completely awesome way. The light became too bright to look at, and they all covered their eyes except Owen, who wrote himself sunglasses that made him look even cooler. Then abruptly, the light disappeared and everything went dark. “Looks like this story,” Owen said, pulling off his sunglasses, “just started a new chapter.” Bethany slowly stepped past Owen, her eyes on the figure on the ground. The former king was no longer dressed in royal robes. Now he wore normal clothes, and his hair had turned the same shade as Bethany’s, a bronzish red. The man shook his head, then slowly pushed to his feet, his mouth hanging open. “. . . Bethany?” he said, his eyes widening. “Dad?” she said, not believing it. “It’s me, Beth,” her dad said, holding out his arms. “You’ve saved me! I never thought I’d be able to turn back to my true self, but you’ve done it!” Bethany ran forward and jumped into her dad’s arms, knocking them both to the ground. “Dad!” she shouted. “I can’t believe it’s you! Owen, you did it!” “I’ve never seen anything so sweet,” Kiel said from Owen’s side, rubbing his eyes. “I have,” Charm said, looking at Owen as her hand slipped into his.   •  •  •   The white paw of a black cat touched Owen’s hand, and he stopped writing. Spike, Owen’s fictional self’s former cat, glanced up at Owen from his desk with a look that said, Really? “Too much?” Owen asked his fictional cat. Spike just blinked his eyes slowly, leaving his paw on Owen’s hand. “I have,” Charm said, looking at Owen with affection. Spike dug his claws into Owen’s hand, and Owen sighed. “Fine.” “Really?” Charm said, stepping away from the other two. “No one else thinks this is a trap? I’m the only one?” Spike took his paw off of Owen’s hand and began to purr contentedly as he closed his eyes to nap again. “You know, I’m the one who’s writing this,” Owen said. “And it’s not exactly easy. Maybe at least hold your judgment until it’s done?” Spike briefly opened his eyes, then closed them again, completely unmoved. Owen absently scratched his cat’s stomach, reading over what he had written. Ugh. Why was it all so bad? Did every writer have this problem? Everything just seemed so . . . obvious. Make the villain Bethany’s dad? It’d been done a thousand times. He began to idly tap the keys without pressing them while he stared off into space. When he glanced back at the computer, though, there were new words. Apparently he’d been typing without realizing it? “Owen,” said a man who appeared out of nowhere, with no features or details anywhere on his body. The mannequin-looking man had his back to the Owen in the story as he spoke to the real Owen. “Stop this at once. You’re manipulating fictional characters’ lives. Do you have any idea what you’re doing here?” Owen’s eyes widened as he read the lines, while at his side, Spike began to growl, low and menacing. Owen hadn’t just written those words . . . had he? And then more text appeared on the screen, without Owen even moving his hands. “Do not write again,” Nobody said. “I don’t want to have to tell you this twice.” And with that, he disappeared. A chill went through Owen, and he quickly reread the last few lines. What had just happened? Was that really Nobody? And if so, was Owen actually messing with real fictional people’s lives? Had he just created another fictional Owen? He quickly highlighted the entire story, ready to hit the delete button, then froze. What if he had created new people, and was now going to delete them? Would that take them out of existence somehow? His finger hovered over the button as he looked to Spike for an answer. But now that Nobody was gone, the cat seemed to have returned to his nap, not paying any attention. Should he delete the story, or was that worse? If only there was someone he could ask— “OWEN!” shouted someone from mere inches away. Owen screamed and tumbled out of his chair, while Spike tore away across the room, hiding under the bed. His heart racing, Owen turned to find Bethany’s head sticking out of a piece of paper on his desk, and he gave her the dirtiest look he could. “Don’t do that! You scared me half to death!” She’d given him a page from a book she kept hidden under her bed. In case of emergencies (fictional characters escaping their books, libraries burning down, that kind of thing) she could jump in one page, move to the next part of the story, then pop out of his. But it was not meant for terrifying him! “Good, you should be scared!” she said, breathing heavily. “Because that guy is back on the street again, the one who keeps watching my house!” Owen groaned loudly. “Seriously? This again?” “Oh, is my being stalked by a crazy person boring to you?” Bethany asked, giving him a sarcastic look. “Get over here and help me spy on him!” She moved her head to the side, and one hand popped out of the page. Owen shook his head. “No way. Remember what happened last time I came over to check on this guy?” Bethany rolled her eyes. “He wasn’t there, but only because he must have seen us coming!” “And the time before that?” “That one, I got the car wrong.” “And we terrified that poor old lady!” “Then she shouldn’t be acting so suspiciously!” Bethany yelled, her hand flying around wildly. “Who sits in their car for ten minutes at eleven at night?” “She couldn’t get it started!” “That’s what she wanted us to think,” Bethany said, glancing around suspiciously. “Hurry up, or he might leave again!” “Which would mean he’s not actually spying on you,” Owen said, sighing. “Bethany, it’s been a while since we jumped into a book—” “Two months, three weeks, and four days, actually. Now come on—” “And I know it’s been hard on you. But you’re kind of acting . . . different now.” Bethany’s face froze, and she pulled her hand back into the page. “What? What are you talking about? Don’t you get it? This could be Doyle, or Fowen again. Maybe Fowen got out of the book where I left him and is back for revenge. Or maybe Doyle remembered everything that happened and wants to figure out how I jump into books. If Kiel were here instead of running off to find out who he is without magic, he could just cast a spell or something to find out who this guy is. But without him, we’re going to need a good plan.” Owen groaned again. “No more mysteries. Please? Fowen and Doyle are both still in the fictional world where we left them. And whoever’s parked outside your house is probably one of your neighbors, which would explain why he’s on your street.” “You think I’m making this up, don’t you?” Bethany said, looking suspicious. “Not . . . entirely. I just think you used to jump into books every night, and now, well, your imagination doesn’t have as much to play with, so it’s messing with you.” She gave him an evil look and started to say something, then stopped, shaking her head. “Maybe you’re right. I might have a little bit of cabin fever or something. I’ll just go to bed and forget all this. See you tomorrow?” “Yeah, of course,” Owen said, breathing a sigh of relief. He’d been worried about saying something for weeks now, but she’d been getting more and more frantic to find something exciting in their fairly boring lives, and it was out of control. “And Bethany? Only use that page for emergencies. I might not have clothes on or something!” Bethany rolled her eyes, then waved good-bye and disappeared. Owen slowly got back into his chair, and Spike came trotting out from under the bed, then jumped into his lap. He petted his cat for a moment, then sighed. “Bethany’s going after the guy in the car, isn’t she.” Spike just purred in response. “Fine,” Owen said, and set Spike on his bed. “I’ll go, but this guy better be a murderer or something, or I’m going to be really annoyed!”

Book 3 of a riveting magical series with a refreshing spin. You really bond with both the characters and the "author." Never a dull moment, and a laugh a page.

My son and I are really enjoying this series. The only bad thing is you can't put the book down because it's so engaging, then the author leaves you on a cliff for an entire year while you wait for the next book to be written. It's still questionable whether good triumphs over evil, or if we'll have read 5 books before we find out the morals are questionable. Personally, when you are writing kids books, in my opinion they need to end with a good moral. We're waiting to see what happens here. For sure, I'll be buying the next two books to find out. For now all I can say is write faster, Man!

It was a good read. It kept me interested and wanting to read. I was not a big fan of the ending. Can't wait for the next one. I recommend this book to everyone. Hope you enjoy it like I did.

Dr. Ivar Jacobson,Vice President of Business Engineering, is the inventor of the OOSE method, and he is also the founder of Objectory AB in Sweden, which recently merged with Rational Software Corporation. Dr. Jacobson is the principal author of two influential and best-selling books Object-Oriented Software Engineering--A Use Case Driven Approach (Computer Language Productivity award winner in 1992) and The Object Advantage--Business Process Reengineering with Object Technology. He has also authored several widely referenced papers on object technology. One of the most famous papers is his first OOPSLA '87 paper entitled "Object-Oriented Development in an Industrial Environment," which presented the first truly object-oriented method ever published. I am please to give this book 5 stars. I have not yet read the other reviews and do not understand any lower ratings other than they just do not get iit yet. The chapter on Use Case development, for instance is worth getting this book. So many engineers do not understand the simple concepts of Use Cases and Sequence Diagrams. I was introduced to Sequence Diagrams with ObjectTime in the mid '90s. I have written about the experience -- a 4-month project which had an integration time of less than 2 hours.Real Systems Engineering with Executable Models at the top level, and Use Cases flowed down as described in this book are still revolutionary to communicating a project between the stakeholders and building the right system right.Malcolm

With Booch's OOA/D and Rumbaugh et al's OMT of the same mid-90's era, Jacobsen's Use Cases complete a set of the most powerful contemporary approaches to software development prior to UML (no coincidence that they joined forces at Rational!).The well-integrated contents include: business engineering (definitions, the "new company", BPR, risk management), what is business modelling (definitions, traditional ways of modelling- SA/SD, IDEF, SADT, working with business models), object orientation (definitions & modelling), OO business modelling (re-engineering, business context), architecture, reversing the existing business, forward business engineering, an example, building the supporting information system, managing OO business engineering, and scaling up to a large business.Strengths include the attractive appropriate use of figures, sidebars, references and supporting material; and the depth of proven use cases and applications supporting the credibility of approach. A book you can read cover to cover, or dip into a section for reference. Much of the approach is now included in Rational's UML - so the book still has value for business and software development.Criticisms include the lack of more fully worked examples, and the lack of checklists (although chapter summaries are good).Overall a great intermediate-level text (not introductory nor complete enough to be expert) for software developers, engineers, and business information systems consultants.

This book tackles business process reengineering from an information technology perspective. While I personally disagree with some of the assumptions made by the author, there is a lot of value here for ANYONE involved in process improvement initiatives. In fact, I believe that some of the insights provided by this work are available in no other book on the subject - making this book indispensable for process improvement managers and consultants. In large systems the earliest OO approach of noun/verb delineation where your entity was the noun-object and the methods were the processes of the noun-object is only valid for small applications or businesses. For enterprises with multifunctional entities, for example airlines, the number of processes becomes so great that the objects can not be loaded into RAM at run-time.Using Jacobson's approach of delineating across the object types (i.e. Entity, Control, and Boundary)proves the granularity required for development. With experience one may wish to add to these 3 object types, for example Event and Business_Rule seem to be effective additions from my personal experience.This book is also a great reference, for we mere mortals, in fully understanding Jacobson's Object Oriented Software Engineering: A Use Case Driven Approach (1992).

Only two reviews here?? This book precedes Ivar Jacobson's role in UML, so it may be slightly redundant today, but it is an excellent use cases book, and it still comes down from the shelf now and then.

Ok, so maybe the subject matter isn't the most riveting but I truly found this book so totally boring that I have never been able to finish it despite several attempts. Thankfully this book has been superseded by many other titles.

It's got substations, protection, lots of overhead (contact) line design, coupling points (tie-station), lots of colour pictures, lots of equations and maths. Its a good book for railway electrification designers, but far from being the "must have" book that the authros would like it to be. The problem is that being written by German authors, it is too heavily biased towards their systems and their methods of design. If it covered other electrification systems in a little more detail, then it would be a better book.

An exhaustive manual of electric railroading. It has been translated from German to English. Primarily European systems are discussed which have long history of electrification. Good purchase.
