Review

"Curtis' choice of the present tense brings immediacy, allowing readers to feel that they are going through the ordeal hand in hand with Christina. Presenting the story through Christina's stream-of-consciousness brings the story 'up close and personal' and allows readers to share Christina's thoughts, fears and memories as they occur to her. Recommended." (CM Magazine 2017-12-15)"This story offers an interesting look at a piece of history and a compelling disaster narrative. The author taps into feelings not just of terror but determination and self-reflection, as Christina fights for her life in an increasingly grim lifeboat. A partnership with her fellow survivor helps move the plot along, and a mystery around his life adds some intriguing historical context…Curtis' novel will make an exciting read for any historical-fiction fan." (Booklist 2018-01-18)"A riveting story of survival, friendship, and the power of the human spirit." (Caroline Pignat, Governor General's Award-winner author 2018-01-18)"Curtis has managed to engage the complex subject matters of mortality and grief in a surprisingly accessible and appropriate manner for young readers. Her philosophical observations on the topic manage to provoke thought and lend themselves well to the profundity of the historical event and the fictional representation. Curtis also throws in allusions to the poems 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' and 'Kublai Khan' by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, again demonstrating the intelligence behind this book, and its homage to romanticism and human virtue. Big Water is an excellent read for young readers and adults alike." (Resource Links 2018-02-15)"Curtis provides readers rich details of life in Victorian-era Canada…This novel adeptly combines historical fiction with a heavy dose of adventure and even some romance. A must-buy for where Victorian-era historical fiction or survivor tales are popular." (School Library Journal 2018-02-28)"Big Water is a gripping adventure…Curtis manages to convey the horror of the experience in a believable way, but without being overly morbid…News accounts at the time tended to focus on the boy's story rather than that of the girl. Curtis, by contrast, gives the heroine her due." (Quill & Quire 2018-03-21)"Full of suspense and adventure…A memorable story." (The Nerd Daily 2018-06-04)"Carries its weight in emotions and suspense for the reader. The novel is a great way to explore the many shipwrecks in Ontario and will engage readers who like historical fiction and survivalist themes." (Canadian Children's Booknews 2018-06-20)"A gripping tale that deals sensitively with the growing romance between the survivors." (Canadian Teacher 2018-10-29)

First of all, thank you to Netgalley and Orca Book Publishers for giving me a free copy of this book in exchange for a review!Big Water follows the story of two lone survivors who find themselves adrift after a shipwreck. It's based on historical truth, and I really liked the glimpse into a vibrant story I hadn't heard about before. Our narrator, Christina, told the story with great detail and feeling. I thought the author did a good job of tackling such an unbearable tragedy and showing it honestly through the eyes of a teen. We find out in the course of the book that Christina is trying to understand the death of her twin brother, Jonathan. I thought that it as an interesting choice to frame the shipwreck through the lens of her brother's death. This had the benefit of taking the present part of the story (which could easily have become incomprehensibly grim) and distilling it into a grief that's more readily accessible. However, I also found the amount of flashbacks to be distracting, and ultimately a bit stale. I think it might be because--though this particular story is definitely unique--the story of the perfect brother who died and the grieving parents isn't, particularly. I didn't really feel an emotional connection to Jonathan or Christina's life she left behind, because most of the characters in it felt fairly standard. I think this narrative device could have worked harder.Similarly, there were two hooks--Why is Christina so guilty? and What is Daniel's secret?--that didn't really pan out satisfyingly. Christina's guilt is understandable but the reason isn't necessarily a revelation. Daniel's secret is interesting, but once it's out it's repeated several times, with nothing really coming out of it in the end--at least not at the point the story stops. Again, I felt these were two missed opportunities to propel the story deeper. That said, I did read through in a rush, and enjoyed learning about this historical event. Overall, a really interesting story! Also that cover is GORG

I really enjoy Historical Fiction, so I was sure this book would capture my attention. It was pretty surprising when I ended up disliking it and skimming the last few chapters. For me the biggest problem was the writing style. It never engaged me and it felt like it was more of a book report than fiction. When intense storms or things were happening I felt more confused than anything else, because it never felt intense. I never felt like the characters were in much danger. Christina and Daniel also never felt like real characters because of this, and so I wasn't able to connect with them. I apologize for this short review, but there really isn't much else to say about this book. I saw some other reviews say that this book lacked depth, and I feel that that is a very accurate summary of why I didn't enjoy it. In the end I gave it one star on Goodreads.Â

Big Water is a fictional account of the real-life story of the only two survivors of the sinking of the SS Asia in 1882. This is a really good story. It tells of a young 17 year old named Christina McBurney who is so upset at her twin brother's death of consumption, runs away and boards The Asia, to go somewhere new. Luckily her cousin works on the Asia so she knows someone. The sea is so turbulent that she is lucky to get on the last boat with her cousin, the Captain and a few other people and a young man named Daniel. What follows is a harrowing journey of being lost at sea and watching everyone die in the lifeboat except for Daniel and herself. What follows is their journey and where it leads them to. Along this journey Christina learns that what she thought was true may not be and she grows up a lot. I loved this story and I am sure a lot of people will like it as well. I gave this book 5 Stars

When Christina's twin brother dies, she runs away and boards the steamship Asia. While on the Great Lakes, a storm topples the boat, leaving Christina scrambling in the water. With a dozen others, Christina finds shelter on a lifeboat, only to have it turn over and over in the water. By the end of the night, only Christina and one other are alive.Based on a true story, this was an interesting look at a little known disaster. Christina was a strong and dynamic character, one I found myself rooting for. I think the writing style is well suited towards young adults, particularly those who want a little adventure and romance. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this book and think that it is something that all school districts should take more time to do. Previously, branding was the premise of private schools as they sought to attract new students, justify their fees and increase enrollment, but it is more relevant than ever for today's public schools. However, this isn't about branding in the business sense, it's about branding in the storytelling sense. Who is the storyteller in chief at your school? What do they share and how do they share? There are amazing things happening in our schools today, truly amazing things, but often they do not leave the four walls of that academic institution so parents don't always here about them. Seth Godin said you are what you share. If you are a school that doesn't share the great work of your students and teachers, how can you hope to engage the community at large and form learning partnerships with parents to ensure the success of all students? Joe and Tony explore a variety of digital tools to help spread your message and talk about the benefits of sharing.Recommended reading for all school leaders.

Our school is very small, rural k-12 with a lot of heart, as half of the Community Outreach team we need creative ways to let the surrounding area know about our amazing little school. This was so informational! I’m wondering if it’s a little dated on the social media data since perhaps Twitter is waning amongst teens but the principles are the same. This book also made me rethink my personal push for a school app, perhaps it would make more sense to find out where our people already are and streamline all our school info there (instead of each teacher using a different app/outlet source). Thanks for the great, easy to read book!

Really enjoyed this book. Teaches leaders to represent their school and build it!

Your great accessible book affirms many suppositions I had on branding a school. Thank you for sharing very doable strategies that will ultimately strengthen school and community relationships. Cheers!

A great read to get you thinking about how to get your school's message to your stakeholders. Also provides some helpful links and apps to get that message out there.

My school has begun work with branding what we do and I was hopeful this book would be more specific about the science behind it and have more concrete examples --- especially for large urban campuses. Maybe I expected too much.

Tony and Joe do a great job spelling out how to Brand your School.

"The Power of Branding: Telling Your School's Story" is a must read for educators. It is a quick guide that explains the need, and purpose, of branding your school through the intentional sharing your school's unique story. The book highlights practical ways in which educators can share the valuable learning that happens everyday with their stakeholders, and the larger educational community. The importance of engaging our families and school communities in timely, meaningful and authentic ways cannot be understated. Tony and Joe share their experiences, and provide convincing evidence for creating an intentional plan that empowers all stakeholders to take part in the branding of their school utilizing the myriad of technology tools available, and sharing the amazing things that happen each day.

I found Dr. Morey's book to be extremely valuable. In fact, I plan on using it for teaching purposes. The topics he discussed were very clearly presented and this would make an excellent textbook for a class on basic historical theology. The book was very well laid out and the concepts that he presented were rather heavy but understandable to a laymen that had no theological background. I especially liked the fact that he mentioned evangelical leaders that he believes have a somewhat twisted view of certain theological concepts. My only criticism of the book is that it could have been laid out better. I would have preferred to have it published as a hardback. Also, he needs to have it proofread by a professional. This is such a good book that the format tended to draw me away from the content at times. If you ever had questions about what is going on within the seminaries of this nation and within church leadership circles regarding orthodox theology, this book is a "must read!" Definitely a keeper that you will go back to time and again for references.Total Truth (Study Guide Edition / Paperback Edition): Liberating Christianity from Its Cultural CaptivityIdols for Destruction: The Conflict of Christian Faith and American CultureHow Should We Then Live? A lot to digest in this book

I am only half way through Dr. More's book but it is an eye opener to how far Christian's have fallen from trusting scripture as our authority.I highly recommend this book if you want to have your humanistic tendencies exposed and corrected. I didn't realize how much of my thought process is really based on humanism. Praise God for revealing my err.Dr. Morey does not hold back and calls out "Christians" by name for holding to obviously false, and humanistic ideas. I caution the sensitive who have a hard time being objective. The book does have several typos but they are obvious and they do not impede the flow or confuse the meaning.I am looking forward to reading more of Dr.Morey's work.

I put two stars on this for one reason. Mr. Morey seem to be an angry writer and condemns other Christians who do not quite see things his way. There is a wealth of Reformed Theology in this book and much of it is very well done. I just don't like to see public confrontation between Christians, and by Christians, I mean those who are truly saved by the grace of God.

I actually had the honor of meeting Dr. Robert Morey himself and received this book from him. He actually wanted to instruct me using this book. In Natural Law, Dr. Morey employs a well written hard hitting expose of humanism. Like another reviewer who posted here, I too had to change some humanistic habits of mine upon reading this book. High points of the book include his outstanding expositions of the book of Job and Ecclesiastes. His insight on how humanists and scripture view trees was very thought provoking. His expose of what seminaries now teach are well researched. Dr. Morey seems to expand on many of his arguments he used in his epistemology and hermeneutics sections of his Trinity and Issues book.I did however have a few quips about the book, however. For starters, I think Dr. Morey overgeneralizes Arminians as heathens and humanists. Instead of focusing the book about Arminianism vs. Calvinism, he should have focused on just Christianity (Sola Scriptura) vs Humanism. Interestingly enough, Dr. Morey exposes the humanistic arguments of RC Sproul who himself adheres to the Reformed Calvinistic faith. To make matters even more interesting, Dr. Morey in Natural Law makes the unbiblical assertion that God had to directly control the writers of scripture in order for scripture to be inspired. He argues God must have taken over the body of a writer of scripture. We don't see this phenomena anywhere in scripture. The book of Revelation especially refutes this assertion as God more than once commanded John to write what he told him (Rev 1:2, 12; Rev 3:2, 14).Quips asides, I found this book an excellent and outstanding book. If one can get past what Dr. Morey presents as a staunch strong Calvinistic worldview, I have no doubt one will enjoy this read and be blessed by Dr. Morey's knowledge.Woody Devonish- Layman defender of God's word

Review

“I read The Evolution of the Sensitive Soul with an immense interest. It is the best synthesis I know about consciousness. It includes a fascinating history of the concepts and discoveries about consciousness together with an outstanding presentation of the most recent scientific data, theories and philosophical speculations. The evolution of consciousness from the 'Cambrian explosion' up to the Golem predicament is one among the many original aspects of the book. A book that must be read and meditated on."―Jean-Pierre Changeux, professeur honoraire à l'Institut Pasteur et au Collège de France“This massive and challenging book is by far the most thorough attempt at exploring consciousness from a biological and evolutionary perspective. Most impressive is the successful integration of philosophical, historical, neuroscientific, and biological considerations in addressing this most vexing question: How and why did consciousness emerge out of biological activity? By bringing together these different perspectives with impressive scholarship, the authors end up dissolving the hard problem to some extent ― which is exactly what we need to progress in our understanding of consciousness. The book itself is a long, involved read ― but a delightful and thrilling one. It feels like Dennett on steroids.”―Axel Cleeremans, Director, ULB Neuroscience Institute, Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium“This book provides a thought-provoking perspective on one of the greatest questions in science today: what is consciousness, and how did it arise during evolution on planet Earth? Based on the view that consciousness subserves fulfillment of an animal's needs and goals, Ginsburg and Jablonka take us on an engaging journey from Aristotle to contemporary neuroscience, culminating in the daring but well-informed hypothesis that consciousness coheres with complex forms of learning. This book made me think differently of the Cambrian explosion of life, the roots of animal cognition, and the very origins of human thinking. This accessible and inspiring book offers a wealth of information and deep thought for everyone interested in the rich interface between biology, psychology, and philosophy.”―Cyriel M. A. Pennartz, Faculty of Science, Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands

I am 94, and I loved every thought in this book! My summary of the book would be what my mother always told me, "There are two words that will get you not just THROUGH life but enjoying it as you are living it: attitude and gratitude. "They seemed to be a theme of this book! I felt a real sense of peace as I turned these pages and found myself agreeing saying, "yes, that is right." They work for me.

I think this is an outstanding book, and would like to briefly respond to several of the critical reviews.1. The author is quite conscious of the impact of privilege on the lives of the Harvard graduates he studies, and repeatedly makes efforts to determine what kinds of success are, or are not, the result of privilege. He pays close attention to the lives of the women in the Terman study, and the "Inner-City" men who were not born into privilege, to compare them with the experience of the white male Harvard graduates.2. The methods of the study (as, I assume, with the field in general) repeatedly make efforts to correct for the bias of individual observers, including the author. Over the decades, there have been many efforts by "blind" raters to examine one part of the subjects' files, with no knowledge of the rest of that subject's file. I.e. a physician reads the file to evaluate the subject's physical health, with no knowledge of that subject's childhood, professional or personal life, etc. This is not simply about the author interviewing people and confirming his pet theories, although you could superficially get that impression.3. The author is very frank and aboveboard, that he, like every one of us, has certain biases and prejudices in how he sees the world: he is a liberal East Coast academic. However, it is absurd to say that the book is simply a reflection of his prejudices. He writes sensitively and appreciatively about business-executive Republican types (though he is an academic liberal) and about religious believers (though he is not one). I personally am acutely sensitive to the ubiquitous and un-self-conscious liberal bias in the media and academia, and I really did not find any here. Any given page of the New York Times is 100x worse than this book, if liberal bias is something that bothers you. Finally, a couple of interesting points that I believe the book proves well:* Within the cohort of (those who were privileged enough to be) Harvard grads, there was little or no correlation between social status at birth and at the end of life. Many men began with trust funds and boarding school, and ended up scraping by; others from small country towns wound up wealthy.* Many of the "Inner-City" men, who were raised in or near poverty, with few opportunities or privileges, were able to have healthy, rewarding, inspiring lives, with happy marriages, satisfying work, community ties, grandchildren, rewarding hobbies, etc. On average, they had worse physical health, less prestigious occupations, and lower incomes than the Harvard cohort, but were in no way less happy -- again, on average. What I take away from this book is the idea that although gifts, talents, luck, personal, physical and intellectual qualities, looks, social status, and privilege are all very unequally distributed in life, it is possible to respond well or badly to life's slings and arrows, and that the nature of this response can have a huge impact on your later life. (i.e.: Avoid alcoholism at all costs!!! Seriously.)

I have read this book fully twice in the past decade. It is both the most solidly based research on what makes for a happy old age, and one of the most humane and thoughtful records of elders speaking for themselves to a sympathetic, wise, and literate hearer. As I move into the age group discussed by the book, I find it an invaluable guide to self-care in both the physical and the mental/spiritual dimensions. Thank heaven George Vaillant started this work at a young age and has continued it for so many years. Give it to anyone you know who hopes or expects to live into their 60s or later.

The areas that were the "intellectual set up for the "Aging Well" documentation were the deeper and least entertaining of this book but quite necessary for providing what would be required for drawing the meaningful conclusions for this book! However I will say that that without this documentation the conclusions drawn for the "Aging Well" premise would not be as well understood. I found the conclusions drawn and recommended to be very insightful and will be helpful on a personal basis. I will retread several of the last chapters where the major conclusions are shared and given meaning that I will personally benefit from for my own "Aging "Well" perspective. I can see where after having lost my wife last year after 50+ years of marriage this information will help me in dealing with my own personal grief reconciliation. Anyone needing a healthy perspective for aging and beginning to face their own immortality would also benefit from reading this book!!I would never have found this book if it had not been on the end table of the Assisted Living Facility and caught my interest while awaiting an opportunity to talk with the Administrator of the facility where my wife was living prior to here passing.

This is the latest volume reporting the findings of a decades long study about how we "grow up". Two conclustions: 1. we should give a copy to every twenty-year old, but it would be a wasted effort!, 2. I found my perceptions re. my view of both the sources of success and the sources of wounds largely confirmed. There is comfort in both end points: that we may be gratified at the first and left with a clearer understanding that so much of our discomforts about who we are arose from many events and persons which were beyond our control. There is conentment to be found in these pages.

The first half of this book is excellent. The author explains the value of the longitudinal study and then demonstrates its value over and over through the stories of the study's participants. The second half of this book is not as clear or specific as to what the author is trying to tell us. The theme seems to be happy, be outgoing, have a lot of friends and family, have a lot of activity, and you will age successfully. Also, there is an inordinate emphasis on cultivating a garden which is difficult for apartment and city dwellers. The book is written for a lay person and the author clearly explains any technical information the reader needs to know. It is definitely worthwhile to read this book and glean from what you can that fits with your life.
